The present study addresses experimental results to investigate the details of the near field flow structures produced in the under-expanded, dual, coaxial, swirling, jet. The sonic/supersonic swirling jets are emitted from the sonic inner nozzle and the outer annular nozzle produce the co-swirling and counter swirling against the primary swirling jet, respectively. The interactions between both the secondary annular swirling and primary inner supersonic swirling jets are quantified by the pitot impact and static pressure measurements and visualized by using the Schliern optical method. The experiment is performed for different swirl intensity and pressure ratio. The results obtained show that the secondary co-swirling jet significantly changes the inner under-expanded swirling jet, such as the recirculation zone, pressure distribution, through strong interactions between both the swirling jets and the effects of the secondary counter-swirling jet is similar to the secondary co-swirl jet case.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to understand the operating mechanism of the rock-drill drifter, to explain how to setup an experimental test system and measure the strain of the drifter's rod, and to evaluate the drifter's performance with respect to the impact energy and blow frequency. Methods: The structure of the rock-drill drifter and its operating principle regarding the impact process were analyzed. Static calibration was carried out to calculate the correction factor using a drifter rod as the first step of the experimental test. The impact energy and blow frequency were then calculated based on strain measurements of the drifter's rod. Results: Experimental results showed that the tested drifter elicited a blow frequency of 3330 BPM (Blows Per Minute) and generated impact energy of 170 J/blow. This indicates that the drifter elicits a higher percussion speed and results in a lower impact energy compared to the hydraulic breaker at the same input power. Conclusions: The study proposed methodologies that deal with the experimental setup and the evaluation of the performance of the rock-drill drifter. These methodologies can be extensively used for validating and improving the percussion performance of the drilling equipment.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of knee extension exercise using blood flow restriction on the changes in the thickness and static balance ability of the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle and achilles tendon. Methods: A total of 30 subjects was were divided into two groups of 15 subjects each. The changes in the thickness and balance of their tendons were measured by ultrasonography and balance equipment. The measurements were taken three times: before the experiment, 4 weeks after, and 8 weeks after. The results were analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA, one-way ANOVA was conducted in cases where there were time-to-group interactions in the intra-individual effects test. Results: Significant differences in the thickness of the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle and Achilles tendon were found between the groups, over time, and in the time-to-group interactions (p<0.05). The changes in balance in both feet when the supporting positions between eye-open and eye-closed states were significantly different in the time-to-group interactions (p<0.05), but were not different between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Knee extension exercise using blood flow restriction leads to significant differences in the increase in tendon thickness and changes in balance, indicating that the results of this study can be utilized as basic data for future studies and for rehabilitation treatment at clinics.
Experimental investigations were conducted to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. Swirl angle measurements were performed using a flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid for Re=60,00080,000. Using the two-dimensional particle image velocimetry method, we found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensities in water with swirl for Re=20,000, 30,000, and 40,000 along longitudinal sections. Neutral points occurred for equal axial velocity at y/(R-r)=0.70.75, and the highest axial velocity was recorded near y/(R-r)=0.9. Negative axial velocity was observed near the convex tube along X/(D-d)=3~23. Another experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. Static pressure, and local flow temperature were measured using tangential inlet condition and the friction factors and Nusselt number were calculated for several Reynolds numbers.
The resilient mounts of a diesel engine installed onboard a ship should be designed for both static and dynamic loads. If possible, the resonance frequencies of the six rigid body modes of the installation and the flexible modes of the engine support structure should not lie within the engine operation range. In this paper a design criterion is proposed to evaluate an isolation system which involves the summation of dynamic forces transmitted through the resilient mounts and elastic potential energy index stored in the mounts. A case study is also presented in which a diesel engine generator, which had an elastic foundation and was mounted in a 5500 TEU container vessel, was studied both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis of the test model was performed by using a single mass 6 degree of freedom system. Actual measurements of mechanical vibration of the engine and its foundation onboard were carried out, which showed the importance of including the flexibility of the engine support structure in the mode.
During a wearer's movement, the apparel fabric layers collide each other in a highly complicated manner. The collision involves cloth-cloth, and cloth-body collision. The diversity of the textile fabrics, including silk, wool, cotton, and other synthetic fibers, together with the complex details of the apparel construction, makes the collision and other calculation procedure involved in the 3-dimensional clothing software system much more complicated. Therefore, there is a need to measure the behavior of the fabrics during the fabric collision cycles. In this study, as a first step, static measurements pertinent to the factors governing the appearance of the apparel fabrics were implemented. The drape profile, stiffness(Sd and Sf), tensile properties, thickness, and the air permeability were measured. The correlation between the parameters were calculated and reviewed. It is found that there is a high correlation of 0.97 between the actual fabric drape parameters and the 3D virtual fabric drape parameters. The measured drape coefficients of the fabrics show relatively good correlation with the measured fabric stiffness.

Social pedestrian groups are the basic elements that constitute a crowd; therefore, detection of such groups is scientifically important for modeling social behavior, as well as practically useful for crowd video understanding. A social group refers to a cluster of members who tend to keep similar motion state for a sustained period of time. One of the main challenges of social group detection arises from the complex dynamic variations of crowd patterns. Therefore, most works model dynamic groups to analysis the crowd behavior, ignoring the existence of stationary groups in crowd scene. However, in this paper, we propose a novel unified framework for detecting social pedestrian groups in crowd videos, including dynamic and stationary pedestrian groups, based on spatiotemporal-oriented energy measurements. Dynamic pedestrian groups are hierarchically clustered based on energy flow similarities and trajectory motion correlations between the atomic groups extracted from principal spatiotemporal-oriented energies. Furthermore, the probability distribution of static spatiotemporal-oriented energies is modeled to detect stationary pedestrian groups. Extensive experiments on challenging datasets demonstrate that our method can achieve superior results for social pedestrian group detection and crowd video classification.
With recent advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, the development of physically responsive field-effect transistors (physi-FETs) that are easily integrated with transformable substrates may enable the omnipresence of physical sensing devices in electronic gadgets. However, physical stimuli typically induce whole sensing physi-FET devices under global influences that also cause changes in the parameters of FET transducers, such as channel mobility and dielectric capacitance that prevent proper interpretations of response in sensing materials. Extended-gate structures with isolated stimuli have been used recently in physi-FETs to demonstrate performances of sensing materials only. However, such approaches are limited to prototype researches since isolated stimuli rarely occur in real-life applications. In this report, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that integrating piezoelectric nanocomposites directly into flexible organic FETs (OFETs) as gate dielectrics provides a general research direction to physi-FETs with a simple device structure and the capability of precisely investigating functional materials. Measurements with static stimulations, which cannot be performed in conventional systems, exhibited giant-positive d33 values of nanocomposites of barium titanate (BT) NPs and poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)).
