Finite element simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of grain growth in the superplastic blow forming process. A microstructure-based constitutive model considering grain growth effects is proposed and used in the simulations. Also, a grain growth rate equation accounting for both static and dynamic grain growth is implemented. The simulations were made using a 2D plane-strain model for constrained blow forming and an axisymmetric model for free bulging. These two models showed different features during the forming stages. However, the forming pressure-time curve and the thickness distribution obtained by both simulations explained well the deformation hardening induced by the grain growth during superplastic forming. This study shows that grain growth is an important factor in determining the material behavior during superplastic deformation.
Evaluation of microstructural changes is important for process control during open die forging of heavy ingots. The control of forging parameters, such as shape of the dies, reduction, temperature and sequence of passes, is to maximize the forging effects and to minimize inhomogeneities of mechanical properties. The hot working die steel is produced by using the multistage open die forging. The structure is altered during forging by subsequent Precesses of plastic deformation, recrystallization and grain growth. A numerical analysis using an rigid visco-plastic finite element model was performed to predict microstructural evolution of hot working die steel.

Many studies on the microstructures in rocks have been conducted using experimental methods with various equipment as well as natural rock studies to see the development of microstructures and understand their mechanisms. Grain boundary migration of mineral aggregates in rocks could cause grain growth or grain size changes during metamorphism or deformation as one of the main recrystallization mechanisms. This study suggests improved ways regarding the analog material experiments with reformed equipment to see sequential observations of these grain boundary migration. It can be more efficient than the existing techniques and carry out an appropriate microstructure analysis. This reformed equipment was implemented to enable optical manipulation by mounting polarizing plates capable of rotating operation on a stereoscopic microscope and a deformation rig capable of experimenting with analog materials. The equipment can automatically control the temperature and strain rate of the deformation rig by microcontrollers and programming and can take digital photomicrographs with constant time intervals during the experiment to observe any microstructure changes. The composite images synthesized using images by rotated polarizing plates enable us to see more accurate grain boundaries. As a rock analog material, norcamphor(C7H10O) was used, which has similar birefringence to quartz. Static grain growth and simple shear deformation experiments were performed using the norcamphor to verify the effectiveness of the equipment. The static grain growth experiments showed the characteristics of typical grain growth behavior. The number of grains decreases and the average grain size increases over time. These case experiments also showed a clear difference between the growth curves with three temperature conditions. The result of the simple shear deformation experiment under the medium temperature-low strain rate showed no significant change in the average grain size but presented the increased elongation of grain shapes in the direction of about 53° regarding the direction perpendicular to the shearing direction as the shear strain increases over time. These microstructures are interpreted as both the plastic deformation and the internal recovery process in grains are balanced by the deformation under the given experimental conditions. These experiments using the reformed equipment represent the ability to sequentially observe changing the microstructure during experiments as desired in the tests with the analog material during the entire process.

The heat resistant material, in service, may experience static loading, cyclic loading, or a combination of two. An experimental study of crack growth behavior of STS 316L austenitic stainless steel under fatigue, and creep-fatigue loading conditions were carried out on compact tension specimens at various tensile hold times. In the crack growth experiments under hold times. In the crack growth experiments under hold time loading conditions, tensile hold times were ranged from 5 seconds to 100 seconds and its behavior was characterized using the $\Delta$K parameter. The crack growth rates generally increase with increasing hold times. However in this material, the trend of crack growth rates decreases with increasing hold times for short hold time range relatively. It is attributed to a decline in the cyclic crack growth rate as a result of blunting at the crack tip by creep deformation. The effect of grain size on the creep behavior of STS 316L was investigated. Specimens with grain size of 30, 65 and 125${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were prepared through various heat treatments and they were tested under various test conditions. The fracture mode of 316L changed from transgranular to intergranular with increasing grain size.
Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) technique had been adapted to the Mg alloy (AZ31) for achieving effective grain refinement through severe deformation. The average grain size of $2.5{\mu}m$ could be obtained after 4 passes. The stability of the ECAPed structure at elevated temperatures was examined by annealing the ECAPed materials over a wide range of temperature between 473 and 748 K. The average activation energy, Q, for static grain growth of 1, 2 and 3 passes was 33.7 kJ/mole (=0.25QL, activation for lattice diffusion). The abnormally low Q value in the lower temperature range may indicate that grain growth occurs in the unrecrystallized microstructure where non-equilibrium grain boundaries containing a large number of extrinsic dislocations exist. The yield stresses of the ECAPed alloys decreased whereas the elongations increased after the ECAP process. These results should be related to the modification of texture for easier slip on basal plane.

To reduce the forming load due to the temperature drop, during the hot forging process, a reheating hot forging process design is required that to repeat heating and forging. However, if the critical strain required for recrystallization is not induced during forging and grain growth becomes dominant due to the reduction in dislocation density due to repeated heating, the mechanical properties may deteriorate. Therefore, in this study, Inconel 706 alloy was applied, and the grain refinement behavior was comparatively analyzed according to the number of reheating times and effective strain during reheating hot forging process. Reheating was carried out with a total compression rate of 40% up to 4 times. The Inconel 706 compression test specimens heated once showed finer grains as the effective strain increased due to the dynamic recrystallization phenomenon. However, as the number of heating increases, grain refinement was observed even in a low effective strain distribution of 0.43 due to static recrystallization during reheating. Moreover, grain growth occurs at a relatively low effective strain of 0.43 when the number of reheating is four or more. Therefore, it was effective to apply an effective strain of 0.43 or more during hot forging to Inconel 706 in order to induce crystallization through grain refinement and improve the properties of forged products. In addition, we could notice that up to three reheating times condition was appropriate to prevent grain growth and maintain fine grain size.
The properties of deformed products are generally dependent upon the distribution of microstureture. It is, therefore, necessary to make the distribution of microstureture uniform in order to achieve the best balance of properties in the final product. This is often a demanding task, even for conventional materials. It is become essential to achieving mechanical integrity and a desired combination of microstructure and properties. The objective mechanical integrity and a desired combination of microsttucture and properties. The objective of this study is to design the optimal die profile which can yield more uniform microstructure in hot extruded product. The microstructure evolution, such as dynamic and static recrystallization as well as grain growth, is investigated using the program com-bined with yada and Senuma's empirical equations and rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method. The die profile of hot extrusion is represented by Bezier-curve to define all available profile. In order to obtain the optimal die profile which yields uniform microstructure in the product the FPS(Flexible Polyhedron Search) method is applied to the present study. To validate the result of present study the experimental hot extrusion is performed and the result is compared with that of simulation.
Static restoration mechanism during hot interrupted deformation of Cu-Zn alloy was studied in the temperature range from $550^{\circ}C$ to $750^{\circ}C$ and at a constant strain rate of 0.1/sec. At a given temperature, the hot interrupted deformations were performed with variation of interrupted time $t_i$ form 1 to 50 sec and of interrupted strain ${\varepsilon}_i$ from 0.15 to 0.90. From the analysis of the values of the critical strain of ${\varepsilon}_c$ for tje initiation of dynamic recrystallization and the peak strain of${\varepsilon}_p$, the relationship ${\varepsilon}_c{\fallingdotseq}0.7{\varepsilon}_p$ was obtained. It was clarified that the softening of the interrupted deformation was mainly the static recrystallization and the fractional softening(FS) which was over 30% mostly confirmed this result. The fractional softening of the interrupted time $t_i$ especially and pre-strain. The FS increased with increasing strain rate, interrupted time and pre-strain. The change of microstructures after hot deformation could be predicted by the FS. when the FS was 30~100%, static recrystallization was happened and grain growth was observed at the condition which was $750^{\circ}C$ deformation temperature, 0.45 prestrain and this condition's FS value was over 100%.
Specimens were machined out from hot-rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy, and deformed at 623K with rolling reduction of 30%. After hot rolling, specimens were annealed at various range of temperature and time. In this study, static recrystallization was occurred during heat treatment, however, variation of main component and intensity of texture was not revealed. The results of microstructure observation, damping capacity test and dislocation mechanism indicated that increasing of damping capacity was caused by grain growth. It means that grain size is effective factor to damping capacity.
