The dynamic buckling mechanism of a single-degree-of-freedom dissipative/nondissipative gradient system is thoroughly studied, employing energy criteria. The model is chosen in such a manner, that its corresponding static response is associated with all types of distinct critical points. Under a suddenly applied load of infinite duration, it is found that dynamic buckling, occurring always through a saddle, leads to an escaped motion, which is finally attracted by remote stable equilibrium positions, belonging sometimes also to complementary paths. Moreover, although the existence of initial imperfection changes the static behaviour of the system from limit point instability to bifurcation, it is established that the proposed model is dynamically stable in the large, regardless of the values of all other parameters involved.
In this paper, various nonlocal higher-order shear deformation beam theories that consider the size dependent effects in Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beam are examined. The presented theories fulfill the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surface of the beam and a shear correction factor is not required. Hamilton's principle is used to derive equation of motion as well as related boundary condition. The Navier solution is applied to solve the simply supported boundary conditions and exact formulas are proposed for the bending and static buckling. A parametric study is also included to investigate the effect of gradient index, length scale parameter and length-to-thickness ratio (aspect ratio) on the bending and the static buckling characteristics of FG nanobeams.
The tension and compression buckling behaviour of a square plate with localized zones of damage and subjected to non-uniform loading is studied using a finite element analysis. The influence of parameters such as position of damage, extent of damage, size of damage and position of load on instability behaviour are discussed. The dynamic behaviour for certain load and damage parameters are also presented. It is observed that the presence of damage has a marked effect on the static buckling load and natural frequency of the plate.
The differential quadrature method (DQM) is a numerical technique of rather recent origin, which by its continually increasing applications in different problems of engineering, is a competing alternative to the conventional numerical techniques for the solution of initial and boundary value problems. The work of this paper concerns the application of the DQM in the area of the buckling of multi layered orthotropic composite plates with various boundary conditions the buckling of multi layered composite plates with constant and variable thickness under axial compressive static loading is considered. The effects of fiber orientation and boundary conditions on static behavior of composite plates are presented. The comparison of results from the present method and those obtained from NISA II software shows the accuracy and reliability of this method.
In the present study, microstructure-dependent static stability analysis of inhomogeneous tapered micro-columns is performed. It is considered that the micro column is made of functionally graded materials and has a variable cross-section. The material and geometrical properties of micro column vary continuously throughout the axial direction. Euler-Bernoulli beam and modified couple stress theories are used to model the nonhomogeneous micro column with variable cross section. Rayleigh-Ritz solution method is implemented to obtain the critical buckling loads for various parameters. A detailed parametric study is performed to examine the influences of taper ratio, material gradation, length scale parameter, and boundary conditions. The validity of the present results is demonstrated by comparing them with some related results available in the literature. It can be emphasized that the size-dependency on the critical buckling loads is more prominent for bigger length scale parameter-to-thickness ratio and changes in the material gradation and taper ratio affect significantly the values of critical buckling loads.

This paper presents the exact solutions and closed forms for of nonlinear stability and vibration behaviors of straight and curved beams with nonlinear viscoelastic boundary conditions, for the first time. The mathematical formulations of the beam are expressed based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory with the von Karman nonlinearity to include the mid-plane stretching. The classical boundary conditions are replaced by nonlinear viscoelastic boundary conditions on both sides, that are presented by three elements (i.e., linear spring, nonlinear spring, and nonlinear damper). The nonlinear integro-differential equation of buckling problem subjected to nonlinear nonhomogeneous boundary conditions is derived and exactly solved to compute nonlinear static response and critical buckling load. The vibration problem is converted to nonlinear eigenvalue problem and solved analytically to calculate the natural frequencies and to predict the corresponding mode shapes. Parametric studies are carried out to depict the effects of nonlinear boundary conditions and amplitude of initial curvature on nonlinear static response and vibration behaviors of curved beam. Numerical results show that the nonlinear boundary conditions have significant effects on the critical buckling load, nonlinear buckling response and natural frequencies of the curved beam. The proposed model can be exploited in analysis of macrosystem (airfoil, flappers and wings) and microsystem (MEMS, nanosensor and nanoactuators).
The flutter and buckling analysis of a beam structure subjected to a static follower force is completely studied in the paper. The beam is fixed in the transverse direction and constrained by a rotational spring at one end, and by a translational spring and a rotational spring at the other end. The co-existence of flutter and buckling in this beam due to the presence of the follower force is an interesting and important phenomenon. The results from this theoretical analysis will be useful for the stability design of structures in engineering applications, such as the potential of flutter control of aircrafts by smart materials. The transition-curve surface for differentiating the two distinct instability regions of the beam is first obtained with respect to the variations of the stiffness of the springs at the two ends. Second, the capacity of the follower force is derived for flutter and buckling of the beam as a function of the stiffness of the springs by observing the variation of the first two frequencies obtained from dynamic analysis of the beam. The research in the paper may be used as a benchmark for the flutter and buckling analysis of beams.
Multi-storey frame structures are frequently exposed to static and dynamic forces. Therefore analyses of static (buckling) and dynamic stability come into prominence for these structures. In this study, the effects of number of storey, static and dynamic load parameters, crack depth and crack location on the in-plane static and dynamic stability of cracked multi-storey frame structures subjected to periodic loading have been investigated numerically by using the Finite Element Method. A crack element based on the Euler beam theory is developed by using the principles of fracture mechanics. The equation of motion for the cracked multi-storey frame subjected to periodic loading is achieved by Lagrange's equation. The results obtained from the stability analysis are presented in three dimensional graphs and tables.
This model is proposed to describe the buckling behavior of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in an elastic medium taking into account the combined effects of the magnetic field, the temperature, the nonlocal parameter, the number of walls. Using Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory, thin cylindrical shell theory and Van der Waal force (VdW) interactions, we develop a system of partial differential equations governing the buckling response of CNTs embedded on Winkler, Pasternak, and Kerr foundations in a thermal-magnetic environment. The pre-buckling stresses are obtained by applying airy's stress function and an adjacent equilibrium criterion. To estimate the nonlocal critical buckling load of CNTs under the simultaneous effects of the magnetic field, the temperature change, and the number of walls, an optimization technique is proposed. Furthermore, analytical formulas are developed to obtain the buckling behavior of SWCNTs embedded in an elastic medium without taking into account the effects of the nonlocal parameter. These formulas take into account VdW interactions between adjacent tubes and the effect of terms involving differences in tube radii generally neglected in the derived expressions of the critical buckling load published in the literature. Most scientific research on modeling the effects of magnetic fields is based on beam theories, this motivation pushes me to develop a cylindrical shell model for studying the effect of the magnetic field on the static behavior of CNTs. The results show that the magnetic field has significant effects on the static behavior of CNTs and can lead to slow buckling. On the other hand, thermal effects reduce the critical buckling load. The findings in this work can help us design of CNTs for various applications (e.g. structural, electrical, mechanical and biological applications) in a thermal and magnetic environment.
In this paper, yield stress, tangent modulus and failure strain were varied to ascertain the influence of impact response such as impact force histories and residual energy. And the buckling behavior of FML(Fiber Metal Laminates) were analyzed using numerical method. A number of analyses on FML and aluminum panel were conducted for shear and compression loading to compare the capability of stability. And to evaluate the static performance, static analysis has performed for box beam structure. Low-velocity impact analysis has performed on FML made of aluminum 2024 sheet and glass/epoxy prepreg layers. And the buckling and static performance of FML have been compared to aluminum using the analysis results. For the comparison of structural performance, similar analyses have been carried out on monolithic aluminum 2024 sheets of equivalent weight.
