  • In this study, we performed the biomechanical analysis of cervical plate systems by using a computer simulation based on finite element method to derive reliable model by analysis of design variables and fatigue behavior. To simulate the cervical spine movement in-vivo state by surgery, we modeled the cervical plate system which consisted of screws, rings, rivets, and plate and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Block. The experiment of cervical plate system followed the ASTM F1717 standards that covered the materials and methods for the static and fatigue testing. The result of computer simulation is compared with experimented test. We expected this study is to derive reliable results by analysis of design variables and fatigue behavior for developing a new model.

  • The goal of this study is to replace the current forward 2-piece propeller shaft of 8 ton large truck made of steel with 1-piece composite propeller shaft. A low cost Glass/Epoxy composite propeller shafts were successfully developed, which satisfy requirements such as the capacity of static torque transfer, fatigue strength and bending natural frequency. Devising secure joining method of a composite tube and metal yoke was the most critical issue in successful development of a high torque composite propeller shaft. In this study, joining method using thermal interference fit was adopted for composite to metal joint. Optimum conditions of heating temperature and interference level of thermal interference fit were determined from thermal stress analysis using 3D finite element method. Static torsion test, fatigue test, RPM and balance test were performed to verify the design.

  • The recent high speed propeller with blade sweep is required to have high strength to get the thrust to fly at high speed. The high stiffness and strength carbon/epoxy composite material is used for the major structure and skin-spar-foam sandwich structural type is adopted for advantage in terms of the blade weight. As a design procedure for the present study, the structural design load is estimated through investigation on aerodynamic load and then flanges of spars from major bending loads and the skin from shear loads are sized using the netting rule and Rule of Mixture. In order to investigate the structural safety and stability, stress analysis is performed by finite element analysis code MSC. NASTRAN. It is found that current methodology of composite structure design is a valid method through the static structural test of prototype blade.

  • This study was carried out in order to evaluate the bending creep deflection of glulams and bolted glulams beam-to-beam connection with steel-gusset plates and bolts under changing relative humidity. The two types of glulam beams (130 mm in width, 175 mm in thickness, and 3000 mm in length) used in this study were made from domestic larch and composed of seven layers. The gussets were made of 8-mm-thick steel plates. Creep testing was conducted under constant loads in an uncontrolled environment. The test was carried out in a room that was well ventilated through a window. The creep test specimens were loaded for 33,000 hours. A bending creep test for the glulams was conducted through four-point loading. The applied stresses were 20% and 30% of the MOR in the static bending test for the glulam and bolted glulam, respectively. After 33,000 hours, the creep deflection of the glulam at a 20% stress level increased by 39% to 99%, while the creep deflection of the glulam at a 30% stress level increased by 27% to 67%, as compared with instantaneous elastic deflection. The relative creep increased during autumn and winter, and recovered during spring and summer. The relative creep of the bolted glulams was changed abruptly by loading up to 5,000 hours, but stabilized after 5,000 hours, and then gradually increased until 33,000 hours. The relative creep of the bolted glulam increased 2.11 times on average after 33,000 hours.

  • Recently, with increasing social interests on noise and vibration induced by railway traffic, the application of floating slab track that can efficiently reduce the railway vibration is increasing. In this study, to more accurately understand the dynamic behavior of the floating slab track, a laboratory mock-up test has been performed, and the static and dynamic behaviors at frequency range near the system resonance frequency were explored. Based on the test results, the design of the floating slab track and the structural analysis model used in the design have been verified. The analytic and test results demonstrate that the dominant frequency of the floating slab track occurs at the frequencies between vertical rigid body mode natural frequency and bending mode natural frequency, and the dominant deformation mode is close to the bending mode. This suggests that in the design of the floating slab track, the bending rigidity of the slab and the boundary conditions at slab joints and slab ends should be taken into consideration. Also, the analytic results by the two-dimensional finite element analysis model using Kelvin-Voigt model, such as static and dynamic deflections and force transmissibility, are found in good agreement with the test results, and thus the model used in this study has shown the reliability suitable to be utilized in the design of the floating slab track.

  • This study presented the results of the static load tests conducted to verify the structural robustness of the composite oxidant tank for a space launch vehicle. First, we introduced the test equipment used in the static load test of the composite oxidant tank, and then described the test requirements that the composite oxidant tank must satisfy. In addition, we presented a test set-up diagram consisting of the static load test fixture, hydraulic pressure, control equipment, and data acquisition equipment, and the load profile of the static load test of the composite oxidant tank consisting of shear, equivalent compression, bending, and combination tests. As a result of load control, we verified the reliability of this test by showing the errors between the input load and the feedback load in each channel according to the increase of the test load, and the feedback error between the channel A and channel B of load cell in each load actuator. As a result of the static load test, the load of the actuator was properly controlled within the allowable error range in each test, and we found that the test specimen did not cause damage or buckling that causes significant structural defects in the required load.

  • The effects of strain amplitude. test temperature and stress on the fatigue properties for Ti-Ni wires were investigated using a rotary bending fatigue tester specially designed for wires. The fatigue test results were discussed in connection with the static tensile properties. The DSC measurement was conducted after fatigue test in order to clarify the change of transformation behavior due to the progress of fatigue. Under the temperature below or near the Af, the strain amplitude($\varepsilon_a$)-failure life (Nf) curve showed to be composed of three straight lines with two turning points. Of the 2 turning points, the upper one was coincident with the elastic limit strain and the lower one with the proportional limit strain. With rising of the test temperature above Af, the pattern of $\varepsilon_a$-Nf curve changed gradually to composition of 2 straight lines. The $\varepsilon_a$-Nf curve shifted depending on test temperature. In the short and medium life zones, the higher the temperature was, the shorter the fatigue life. However, in the long life zone, above the Af temperature, the fatigue life was not affected by the temperature. The transformation enthalpy measured after fatigue test was dependent on Nf, $\varepsilon_a$, and test temperature.

  • The Objective of this work was to design Surface Antenna Structure (SAS) and investigate fatigue behavior of SAS that was asymmetric sandwich structure. This term, SAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constant and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, SSFIP elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was 16${\times}$8 array antenna. From electrical measurements, it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. In cyclic 4-point bending, flexure behavior was investigated by static and fatigue test. Fatigue lift curve of SAS was obtained. The fatigue load was determined experimentally at a 0.75(1.875kN) load level. SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration for both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.

  • Recently, the cases of using bonded dissimiliar materials which have each of the different components tend to increase for the purpose of developing new materials and using the special objects in the field of industry. Among the cases the strength evaluation of the joining materials of vehicle engine and the structural materials with ceramic/metal bonded joints becomes more important. But the residual stress occurs, because the joining of ceramics and metals is performed in extremely high temperature. It becomes a dominant cause to reduce the strength of the ceramic/metal bonded joints. In this paper, strength evaluation method of ceramic/metal bonded joints considering stress singularity was investigated by boundary element method and 4-point bending test. An advanced method of quantitative strength evaluation for ceramin/metal bonded joints is to be suggested.
