Frequency control of flywheel energy storage system based on a variable gain depending on the rotor speed and frequency deviation (회전자 속도와 주파수 편차에 따라 변하는 가변게인을 이용한 플라이휠 에너지 저장장치의 주파수 제어)

  • Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) operates motor or generator by utilizing the stored kinetic energy in the rotating mass. Thus, the FESS can support the frequency control of the power system. However, the FESS is disabled when the rotor speed reaches to its minium value. Thus, the second frequency dip occurs in the power system. This paper proposes the frequency control scheme of FESS based on a variable gain depending on the rotor speed and frequency deviation. The proposed scheme prevents the second frequency dip because the variable gain decreases depending on the stored in the FESS. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for the IEEE 14-bus system.

  • Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) involves locating, rescuing (extricating), and medically stabilizing victims trapped in confined spaces. In this paper we state the current approach to USAR, address the limitations and discuss the way for moving in rugged topography. To achieve objectives such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and rescue, it is necessary to develop a driving mechanism that can handle rugged geographical features. We propose a new type of driving mechanism for a rescue robot that has a variable shape single-track. By using a variety shapes, it can get the gain of steering and rotating and the ability to overcome stairs. In this paper, we analyzed the design parameters for making variable transform shapes and determined the specifications of the robot to enhance adaptability to stairs.

  • A direct treatment of the min-max type objective function of the dynamic response optimization problem is proposed. Previously, the min-max type objective function was transformed to an artificial design variable and an additional point-wise state variable constraint function was imposed, which increased the complexity of the optimization problem. Especially, the design sensitivity analysis for the augmented Lagrangian functional with the suggested treatment is established by using the adjoint variable method and a computer program to implement the proposed algorithm is developed. The optimization result of the proposed treatment are obtained for three typical problems and compared with those of the previous treatment. It is concluded that the suggested treatment in much more efficient in the computational effort than the previous treatment with giving the similar optimal solutions.

  • This paper proposes the power management technology for stand-alone PV system to extend installation environment and coverage. The proposed power management technology in this paper can protect battery safeness from overcharge/discharge with keeping the proper SOC(State of Charge) and extend using time of system through estimation of operating power. The proposed power management technology in this paper is applied to Infra-free Variable Message Sign. And performance of power management technology in this paper was verified using simulation scenario.

  • This paper presents an active use of doubly-fed induction-generator(DFIG)-based variable-speed wind-turbine for voltage control in power system operation. For reasonable simulation studies, a detail dynamic model of a DFIG-based wind-turbine grid-connected system is presented. For the research objective, an innovative reactive power control scheme is proposed that manipulates dynamically the reactive power from the voltage source converter(VSC) with taking into account its operating state and limits.

  • In this paper, we present a nonrenewable resource model including environmental pollution stock as a state variable to analyze the dynamic structure of environmental tax. Based on the optimality conditions of our model, we showed that the optimal time path of the shadow cost for environmental pollution stock is the same as that of the costate variable for environmental pollution stock. We did this by applying the theorem, Continuous Dependence on Initial Conditions (Coddington and Levinston, 1985, pp. 22~27), to the optimal control problem. Thus, this result provides a theoretical basis to determine the magnitude of environmental tax to be imposed over time. In addition, we also identified that the costate variable for environmental pollution stock is solely due to the disutility effect.

Power Regulation of Variable Speed Wind Turbines using Pitch Control based on Disturbance Observer

  • Most variable speed wind turbines have pitch control mechanisms and one of their objectives is to protect turbines when the wind speed is too high. By adjusting pitch angles of wind turbine, the inlet power and the torque developed by the turbine are regulated. In this paper, the difference between the real wind speed and its rated value is regarded as a disturbance, and a component called disturbance observer (DOB) is added to the pre-designed control loop. The additional DOB based controller estimates the disturbance and generates a compensating signal to suppress the effect of disturbance on the system. As a result, the stability and the performance of the closed loop system guaranteed by an outer-loop controller (designed for a nominal system without taking into account of disturbances) are approximately recovered in the steady state. Simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed control scheme.

  • The reaction rate of denitrification is primarily affected by the utilization of organics that are usually limited in the anoxic period in a sequencing batch reactor. It is necessary to add an extemal carbon source for sufficient denitrification. An adaptive model of state-space based on the extended Kalman filter is applied to manipulate the dosage rate of extemal carbon automatically. Control strategies for denitrification have been studied to improve control performance through simulations. The normal control strategy of the constant set-point results in the overdosage of external carbon and deterioration of water quality. To prevent the overdosage of external carbon, improved control strategies such as the constrained control action, variable set-point, and variable set-point after dissolved oxygen depletion are required. More stable control is obtained through the application of the variable set-point after dissolved oxygen depletion. The converging value of the estimated denitrification coefficient reflects conditions in the reactor.

  • In this paper, we are concerned with a tracking filter algorithm which can track a maneuvering target. Among the novel tracking filter algorithms, the input estimation (IE) filter can be summarized as estimating the unknown maneuver input and compensating the state according to the estimated input, and the variable dimension filter (VDF) can be summarized as detecting the maneuver of target and changing the dimension of the target dynamics to accomodate the maneuver of target They have some goods and bads with respect to each other.   • The present paper is concerned at investigating the effect of hydrostatic initial stress, gravity and magnetic field in fiber-reinforced thermoelastic solid, with variable thermal conductivity. The formulation of the problem applied in the context of the three-phase-lag model, Green-Naghdi theory with energy dissipation, as well as coupled theory. The exact expressions of the considered variables by using state-space approaches are obtained. Comparisons are performed in the absence and presence of the magnetic field as well as gravity. Also, a comparison was made in the three theories in the absence and presence of variable thermal conductivity as well as hydrostatic initial stress. The study finds applications in composite engineering, geology, seismology, control system and acoustics, exploration of valuable materials beneath the earth's surface.
