We investigate the role of small-scale and large-scale environments in triggering nuclear activity of the local galaxies using a volume-limited sample with $M_r$ < -19.5 and 0.02 < z < 0.0685 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. To fix the mass of the supermassive black hole in its host galaxy, we limit the central velocity dispersion of the sample galaxies. The active galactic nuclei (AGN) host sample is composed of Type II AGNs identified with flux ratios of narrow emission lines with S/N > 6. In this study, we find that the AGN fraction of late-type host galaxies are commonly larger than of early type galaxies. The AGN fraction of host galaxy with late-type nearest neighbor starts to increase as the host galaxy approaches the virial radius of the nearest neighbor (about a few hundred kpc scale). Our result may support the idea that the hydrodynamic interaction with the nearest neighbor plays an important role in triggering the nuclear activity of galaxy. The early-type galaxies in high density regions show decline of AGN activity compared to ones in lower density regions, whereas the direction of the environmental dependence of AGN activity for late-type galaxies is rather opposite. We also find that the environmental dependence of star formation rate is analogous to one of AGN activity except in the high density region.
It is known that the galaxy evolution by direct interaction between galaxies is most active in a galaxy group. As a result, the satellite galaxies are closely related to their central galaxy in properties such as morphology, color and star formation rate (so-called 'galactic conformity'). However, it is not clear yet whether such conformity between galaxies is found in a galaxy cluster. Recently, Lee et al. (2014) have found a measurable correlation between the colors of bright galaxies and the mean colors of their faint companions in a cluster WHL J085910.0+294957 at z = 0.3, using the photometrically-selected cluster members. They suggest that such correlation may be the vestige of infallen groups in the cluster as one possibility. In order to confirm the small-scale conformity in galaxy clusters with higher reliability, we study the Virgo cluster using the Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC). The cluster members are selected spectroscopically unlike in WHL J085910.0+294957. We examine the galactic conformity in two distinct areas of the Virgo cluster: the inner X-ray emission region and its outer region. We find a marginal conformity in color (> $2{\sigma}$ significance to bootstrap uncertainty) in the outer region, while no meaningful signal of small-scale conformity is detected in the X-ray emission region. We discuss the implication of this result, focusing on cluster mass assembly and cluster environmental effects on galaxy evolution.
We present our study on a comparison of dark matter halo merger history from the runs using different numerical simulation codes. To analyze the uncertainty caused by the use of different N-body calculation methods, we compare the results from two cosmological hydrodynamic simulation codes GADGET-2 and RAMSES, which use a TreePM algorithm and the Adaptive Mesh Refinement(AMR) technique respectively. We perform cosmological dark matter-only simulations with the same parameter set and initial condition for both. The dark matter halo mass functions from two simulation runs correspond well with each other, except for lower mass haloes. The discrepancy on the low-mass haloes in turn causes a notable difference in halo merger rate, especially for the case of extremely minor merger. The result from GADGET-2 predicts that most haloes undergo more number of mergers with small haloes than that from RAMSES, independent of halo mass and environment. However, in the context of the study on galaxy evolution, such extreme minor mergers generally do not have strong effects on galaxy properties such as morphology or star formation history. Hence, we suggest that this uncertainty could be quantitatively negligible, and the results from two simulations are reliable even with only minor difference in merger history.
We investigate the influence of neighboring galaxies as a component of the local environment. Based on the SDSS data release 7 and the KIAS value-added galaxy catalog, we have constructed a galaxy pair catalog by matching each galaxy with its nearest and its most tidally-influential neighbor. In particular, we examine the star formation rate (SFR) derived from their optical u-r color and $H{\alpha}$ emission as functions of neighbor's distance, tidal force, and morphological type. The results are as follows. (1) The $H{\alpha}$-based SFR of galaxies with close companions is enhanced by up to a factor of three regardless of neighbor's morphology, when compared to isolated counterparts. (2) The mean u-r color of galaxies along with early-type galaxies is redder than that of isolated ones, yet bluer with late-types. (3) The galaxies with late-type companions mostly show higher SFR than those with early-types. The results suggest that the role played by neighboring galaxies are two-fold; (a) the tidal effect on the shorter scale of time and of distance, and (b) the hydrodynamic effect on the longer scale.
NGC 2024 FIR 6 is a star formation site in Orion and may contain a hypercompact H II region, FIR 6c, and a low-mass protostar, FIR 6n. The FIR 6 region was observed in the water maser line at 22 GHz and the methanol class I maser lines at 44, 95, and 133 GHz, using KVN in the single-dish telescope mode. The water maser spectra displayed several velocity components and month-scale time variabilities. Most of the velocity components may be associated with FIR 6n while one component was associated with FIR 4, another young stellar object in the 22 GHz beam. A typical life time of the water-maser velocity-components is about 8 months. The components showed velocity fluctuations with a typical drift rate of about 0.01 km/s/day. The methanol class I masers were detected toward FIR 6. The methanol emission is confined within a narrow range around the systemic velocity of the FIR 6 cloud core. The methanol masers did not show a detectable time-variability. The methanol masers suggest the existence of shocks driven by either the expanding H II region of FIR 6c or the outflow of FIR 6n.
We present a novel profile stacking technique based on optimal profile decomposition of a 3D spectral line data cube, and its performance test using the HI data cubes of sample galaxies from HI galaxy surveys, THINGS and LITTLE THINGS. Compared to the previous approach which aligns all the spectra of a cube using their central velocities derived from either moment analysis, single Gaussian or hermite h3 polynomial fitting, the new method makes a profile decomposition of the profiles from which an optimal number of single Gaussian components is derived for each profile. The so-called superprofile which is derived by co-adding all the aligned profiles from which the other Gaussian models are subtracted is found to have weaker wings compared to the ones constructed in a typical manner. This could be due to the reduced number of asymmetric profiles in the new method. A practical test made on the HI data cubes of the THINGS and LITTLE THINGS galaxies shows that our new method can extract more mass of kinematically cold HI components in the galaxies than the previous results. Additionally, we fit a double Gaussian model to the superprofiles whose S/N is boosted, and quantify not only their profile shapes but derive the ratio of the Gaussian model parameters, such as the intensity ratio and velocity dispersion ratio of the narrower and broader Gaussian components. We discuss how the superprofile properties of the sample galaxies are correlated with their other physical properties, including star formation rate, stellar mass, metallicity, and gas mass.
We quantify the relative role of galaxy environment and bar presence on AGN triggering in face-on spiral galaxies using a volume-limited sample with 0.02 < z < 0.055, Mr < 19.5, and σ > 70 km s-1 selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. To separate their possible entangled effects, we divide the sample into bar and non-bar samples, and each sample is further divided into three environment cases of isolated galaxies, interacting galaxies with a pair, and cluster galaxies. The isolated case is used as a control sample. For these six cases, we measure AGN fractions at a fixed central star formation rate and central velocity dispersion, σ. We demonstrate that the internal process of the bar-induced gas inflow is more efficient in AGN triggering than the external mechanism of the galaxy interactions in groups and cluster outskirts. The significant effects of bar instability and galaxy environments are found in galaxies with a relatively less massive bulge. We conclude that from the perspective of AGN-galaxy coevolution, a massive black hole is one of the key drivers of spiral galaxy evolution. If it is not met, a bar instability helps the evolution, and in the absence of bars, galaxy interactions/mergers become important. In other words, in the presence of a massive central engine, the role of the two gas inflow mechanisms is reduced or almost disappears. We also find that bars in massive galaxies are very decisive in increasing AGN fractions when the host galaxies are inside clusters.
The Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG) is a high cadence observation program monitoring nearby galaxies at < 50 Mpc with high probabilities of hosting supernovae (SNe). The current number of main IMSNG targets is 60, but with new wide-field facilities joining IMSNG, there is a possibility of increasing the likelihood of catching the early light curves of SNe among galaxies in the vicinity of the main targets. To test the feasibility of the expansion of the sample galaxies, we examine how much the probability of catching SNe increases by adjusting the field of view of the RASA36 telescope which is one of the IMSNG facilities with a large field of view of 6.25 deg2. We calculate supernova rates (SNRs) of galaxies within the FoV that contains main IMSNG galaxies from the stellar mass and star formation rate of the galaxies. Based on the SNRs of these galaxies, we find the best pointing of the telescope towards the highest SNR region. As a result, we present improved total SNR, with respect to the ordinary pointing on average where the IMSNG main target is placed at the center of FoV. The actual observation should be followed to test the effect of this strategy.
To investigate AGN outflows as a tracer of AGN feedback on the host galaxies, we perform integral-field spectroscopy of 20 type 2 AGNs at z<0.1 using the Magellan/IMACS and the VLT/VIMOS. The observed objects are luminous AGNs with the [O III] luminosity >$10^{41.5}erg/s$, and exhibit strong outflow signatures in the [O III] kinematics. We obtain the maps of the narrow and broad components of [O III] and $H{\alpha}$ lines by decomposing the emission-line profile. The broad components in both [O III] and $H{\alpha}$ represent the non-gravitational kinematics, (i.e., gas outflows), while the narrow components represent the gravitational kinematics (i.e., rotational disks), especially in $H{\alpha}$. By using the spatially integrated spectra within the flux-weighted size of the narrow-line region, we estimate the outflow energetics. The ionized gas mass is $(1.0-38.5){\times}10^5M_{\odot}$, and the mean mass outflow rate is $4.6{\pm}4.3M_{\odot}/yr$, which is a factor of ~260 higher than the mean mass accretion rate $0.02{\pm}0.01M_{\odot}/yr$. The mean energy injection rate is $0.8{\pm}0.6%$ of the AGN bolometric luminosity Lbol, while the mean momentum flux is $(5.4{\pm}3.6){\times}L_{bol}/c$, except for two most kinematically energetic AGNs. The estimated energetics are consistent with the expectations for energy-conserving outflows from AGNs, yet we do not find any supporting evidence of instantaneous star-formation quenching due to the outflows.
Based on the $850{\mu}m$ dust continuum data from James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT)/SCUBA-2, we compare overall properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud with PGCCs in other molecular clouds, Orion A and Orion B. The Orion A and Orion B clouds are well known active star-forming region, while, ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud has a different environment associating with prominent OB associations and a giant H II region. PGCCs in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud have higher dust temperatures (Td~16.08 K) and lower values of dust emissivity (${\beta}{\sim}1.65$) than Orion A and Orion B clouds. In addition, we found the lowest detection rate (16 %, 8 out of 50) of PGCCs at $850{\mu}m$ in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud while among three regions; Orion A and Orion B clouds show much higher detection rates of ~ 76 % (23 out of 30) and 56 % (9 out of 16), respectively. The detected 8 PGCCs in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud have substructures and we identified 15 cores. The cores also show much lower median values of size (~0.08 pc), column density (~ ), number density (~ ), and mass (~ ) compared with other cores in the Orion A and Orion B clouds. These core properties in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud can be attributed to the compression and external heating by the nearby H II region, which may prevent the PGCCs from forming gravitationally bound structures and eventually disperse them. These results well present the negative stellar feedback to core formation.
