Development of Korean Paddy Rice Yield Prediction Model (KRPM) using Meteorological Element and MODIS NDVI (기상요소와 MODIS NDVI를 이용한 한국형 논벼 생산량 예측모형 (KRPM)의 개발)

  • Food policy is considered as the most basic and central issue for all countries, while making efforts to keep each country's food sovereignty and enhance food self-sufficiency. In the case of Korea where the staple food is rice, the rice yield prediction is regarded as a very important task to cope with unstable food supply at a national level. In this study, Korean paddy Rice yield Prediction Model (KRPM) developed to predict the paddy rice yield using meteorological element and MODIS NDVI. A multiple linear regression analysis was carried out by using the NDVI extracted from satellite image. Six meteorological elements include average temperature; maximum temperature; minimum temperature; rainfall; accumulated rainfall and duration of sunshine. Concerning the evaluation for the applicability of the KRPM, the accuracy assessment was carried out through correlation analysis between predicted and provided data by the National Statistical Office of paddy rice yield in 2011. The 2011 predicted yield of paddy rice by KRPM was 505 kg/10a at whole country level and 487 kg/10a by agroclimatic zones using stepwise regression while the predicted value by KOrea Statistical Information Service was 532 kg/10a. The characteristics of changes in paddy rice yield according to NDVI and other meteorological elements were well reflected by the KRPM.

Wheat Quality and Its Effect on Bread Staling

  • Wheat is a very popular crop in all over the world due to the various use of wheat flour as staple foods, such as bread. As many food products are made from wheat, the property of wheat can be a determinant of the quality of final food products. Staled bread is not harmful to health but is normally rejected by consumers due to the absence of desirable sensory attributes. The phenomena of staling can be increased hardness of bread, the migration of moisture from center of bread to the crust of bread, loss of flavor and etc. The exact mechanism of staling has not been established completely. To delay or prevent staling, either addition of anti-staling agent, such as surfactant and enzyme or modification of wheat component, such as wheat starch has been adapted. The development of waxy wheat made it possible to reconstitute the starch component in bread. When the content of amylopect in was increased in bread, the loss of moisture was decreased and the reduction in softness of bread was decreased during storage. Increased retrogradation of starch did not always accompany the staling of bread indicating that the retrogradation of starch may not be a single indicator of bread staling. To find out the exact relationship between bread staling and starch retrogradation, further research is necessary.

Antioxidant Activity of Ethyl acetate Fraction of Oat in Caenorhabditis elegans (귀리 Ethyl acetate 분획물의 예쁜 꼬마선충 내의 항산화 효과)

  • Oat, the seeds of Avena sativa L. (Gramineae), is an important dietary staple for people in many countries. Previous studies reported that A. sativa had various pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, neurotonic, and antispasmodic activities. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans model system was used to investigate the antioxidant activity of methanol extract of oat. The ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the oat methanol extract showed the best DPPH radical scavenging activity. The ethyl acetate fraction was measured for the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and oxidative stress tolerance by using C. elegans along with reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. In addition, to confirm that the regulation of the stress response gene is responsible for the increased stress tolerance of C. elegans treated by the ethyl acetate fraction, SOD-3 expression was measured using GFP-expressing transgenic worm. As a result, the ethyl acetate fraction increased SOD and catalase activities, and decreased ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the ethyl acetate fraction-treated CF1553 worm showed higher SOD-3::GFP intensity compared to the control.

Evaluation of Iron and Zinc Content in Rice Germplasms

  • The germplasm of 246 rice cultivars was analysed for iron and zinc contents using a Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma (ICP) at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Philippines. Iron contents ranged from 2.0 to 12.0, and zinc ranged from 10.0 to 33.0 (mg/kg), showing with the mean values of 4.3 and 22.8 (mg/kg), respectively. In genotypes tested, there was approximately a two-fold difference in iron and zinc concentrations, suggesting a genetic potential to increase these micronutrients in rice grain. A highly significant positive correlation ($r^2=0.503$) was found between iron and zinc contents. Iron contents decreased drastically as polishing time increased, whereas zinc decreased only slightly. In the interaction between genotype and environment on iron contents, genotype (G), environment (E), and the G ${\times}$ E interactions accounted for 69%, 5% and 26% of the sums of squares, respectively. Indicating that genotype is would be the most significant factor for the to improve iron contents of rice in rice breeding, suggesting that therefore identifying genotypes with relatively stable performance across various environments is important as staple food crops.

Comparison of forecasting performance of time series models for the wholesale price of dried red peppers: focused on ARX and EGARCH

  • Dried red peppers are a staple agricultural product used in Korean cuisine and as such, are an important aspect of agricultural producers' income. Correctly forecasting both their supply and demand situations and price is very important in terms of the producers' income and consumer price stability. The primary objective of this study was to compare the performance of time series forecasting models for dried red peppers in Korea. In this study, three models (an autoregressive model with exogenous variables [ARX], AR-exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity [EGARCH], and ARX-EGARCH) are presented for forecasting the wholesale price of dried red peppers. As a result of the analysis, it was shown that the ARX model and ARX-EGARCH model, each of which adopt both the rolling window and the adding approach and use the agricultural cooperatives price as the exogenous variable, showed a better forecasting performance compared to the autoregressive model (AR)-EGARCH model. Based on the estimation methods and results, there was no significant difference in the accuracy of the estimation between the rolling window and adding approach. In the case of dried red peppers, there is limitation in building the price forecasting models with a market-structured approach. In this regard, estimating a forecasting model using only price data and identifying the forecast performance can be expected to complement the current pricing forecast model which relies on market shipments.

Peasant Societies in Colonial East Asia: The Universality and Particularity of Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia (식민시대 동아시아의 소농사회: 동남아와 동북아의 보편성과 특수성)

  • The peasant societies of East Asia had been challenged by capitalist plantation since colonization and by socialist collectivization since decolonization. The former was decisively weakened due to the crisis of the capitalist system in the 1930s and the collapse of the colonial order in the 1940s; The latter was thoroughly discredited due to the reform of the socialist system in the 1980s and the end of the Cold War in the 1990s. The failure of the two epochal challenges demonstrates the historical sustainability of peasant societies in East Asia. Their survival represents the universality of Northeast and Southeast Asia, which can be ascribed to the ecological environment and production process of wet-rice agriculture for their common staple food. In spite of their diverse differences, indeed, peasant societies in colonial East Asia shared profound similarities in their basic motivations (morality-rationality), central tendencies (involution - polarization), structural outcomes (dualism - pluralism), and future prospects (survival-extinction).

A Study on the Attribute Value of Instant Rice Using Hedonic Price Model (헤도닉 가격 모형을 이용한 즉석밥 속성가치에 대한 연구)

  • Rice has prevailed as a staple food in South Korea. Rice consumption has sharply shrunk nowadays. In the wake of COVID-19 Shock and the "untact" era, the instant rice market has significantly grown, and there is a possibility of solving the shrinking consumption of domestic rice. This study contributes to the development of rice consumption promotion strategies by examining the factors of purchasing instant rice based on the Hedonic Price Methodology. In particular, given the increase in online market, this study compares attribute values of product characteristics between online and offline markets. The empirical results show that calorie, brand, organic and functional products have positive effects on instant rice prices. The rate of carbohydrate, the PB and bundle attributes have negative effects on instant rice prices. The results also show that the magnitude of brand, bundle and PB attribute values are bigger in offline market while that of the number of multigrain attribute value is relatively bigger in online market. The organic attribute value is important regardless of marketing channels.

Genetic information analysis for the development of an event-specific PCR marker for herbicide tolerance LM crops

  • Recent times have seen sustained increases in genetically modified (GM) crops not only for cultivation but also for the utility of food and feed worldwide. Domestically, commercial planting and the accidental or unintentional release of living modified (LM) crops into the environment are not approved. Many detection methods had been devised in an effort to realize effective management of the safety of agricultural genetic resources. In order to develop event-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) markers for LM crops, we analyzed the genetic information of LM crops. Genetic components introduced into crops are of key importance to provide a basis for the development of detection methods for LM crops. To this end, a total of 18 varieties from four major LM crop species (maize, canola, cotton, and soybeans) were subjected to an analysis. The genetic components included introduced genes, promoters, terminators and selection markers. Thus, if proper monitoring techniques and single or multiplex PCR strategies that rely on selection markers can be established, such an accomplishment can be regarded as a feasible solution for the safe management of staple crop resources.

Estimation of Corn and Soybean Yields Based on MODIS Data and CASA Model in Iowa and Illinois, USA

  • The crop growing conditions make accurate predictions of yield ahead of harvest time difficult. Such predictions are needed by the government to estimate, ahead of time, the amount of crop required to be imported to meet the expected domestic shortfall. Corn and soybean especially are widely cultivated throughout the world and a staple food in many regions of the world. On the other hand, the CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) model is a process-based model to estimate the land plant NPP (Net Primary Productivity) based on the plant growing mechanism. In this paper, therefore, a methodology for the estimation of corn/soybean yield ahead of harvest time is developed specifically for the growing conditions particular to Iowa and Illinois. The method is based on CASA model using MODIS data, and uses Net Primary Productivity (NPP) to predict corn/soybean yield. As a result, NPP at DOY 217 (in Illinois) and DOY 241 (in Iowa) tend to have high correlation with corn/soybean yields. The corn/soybean yields of Iowa in 2013 was estimated to be 11.24/3.55 ton/ha and Illinois was estimated to be 10.09/3.06 ton/ha. Errors were 6.06/17.58% and -10.64/-7.07%, respectively, compared with the yield forecast of the USDA. Crop yield distributions in 2013 were presented to show spatial variability in the state. This leads to the conclusion that NPP changes in the crop field were well reflected crop yield in this study.
