  • The stainless steel wire requires good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as drawing ability, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing drawing ability of stainless steel, Ni coating methods have been used in this study. However, there is no information on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of drawed wires after Ni coating. To investigate corrosion resistance and mechanical property of drawed wire, the characteristics of Ni coated wires have been determined by tensile strength tester, hardness tester, field emission scanning microscope, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and potentiodynamic method in 0.1 M HCl. The drawed stainless steel wires showed the strain-induced martensitic structure, whereas non-drawed stainless steel wire showed annealing twin in the matrix of austenitic structure. The hardness and tensile strength of drawed stainless steel wire were higer than that of non-drawed stainless steel wire. Electrochemical measurements showed that, in the case of drawed stainless steel o ire after Ni coating, the corrosion resistance and pitting potential increased compared with non-coated and drawed stainless steel wire due to decrease in the surface roughness.

  • A number of desirable characteristics concerning excellent durability, aesthetics, recyclability, high ductility and fire resistance have made stainless steel a preferred option in engineering practice. However, the relatively high initial cost has greatly restricted the application of stainless steel as a major structural material in general construction. This drawback can be partially overcome by introducing composite stainless steel-concrete structures, which provides a cost-efficient and sustainable solution for future stainless steel construction. This paper presents a preliminary numerical study on stainless steel-concrete composite beam-to-column joints with bolted flush endplates. In order to ensure a consistent corrosion resistance within the whole structural system, all structural steel components were designed with austenitic stainless steel, including beams, columns, endplates, bolts, reinforcing bars and shear connectors. A finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software for composite beam-to-column joints under monotonic and symmetric hogging moments, while validation was performed based on independent test results. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to investigate the effects of several critical factors on the behaviour of composite stainless steel joints. Finally, comparisons were made between the numerical results and the predictions by current design codes regarding the plastic moment capacity and the rotational stiffness of the joints. It was concluded that the present codes of practice generally overestimate the rotational stiffness and underestimate the plastic moment resistance of stainless steel-concrete composite joints.

  • Recently porous metal has been used as supporting metal in planar type SOFC. In order to search optimum alloys for porous metal support and estimate the stability of metal-supported SOFC at high temperature, it is necessary to investigate the oxidation behaviors of porous material for metal support in comparison with dense material. Oxidation tests of porous and dense stainless steels were conducted at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. Since the specific surface area of porous material is much larger than that of dense material, surface area should be considered in order to compare the oxidation rate of porous stainless steel with that of dense stainless steel. The specific surface area of porous body was measured using image analyzer. The weight gain of porous stainless steel was much greater than those of dense stainless steels due to its larger specific surface area. considering the specific surface area, the oxidation rate of porous stainless steel is likely to be the same as that of dense stainless steel with the same surface area. The change in chromium content in stainless steel during oxidation was also investigated. The experimental result in chromium content in stainless steel during oxidation corresponded with the calculated value. While the change in chromium content in dense stainless steel during oxidation is negligible, chromium content in porous stainless steel rapidly decreases with oxidation time due to its large specific surface area. The significant decrease in chromium content in porous stainless steel during oxidation may affect the oxidation resistance of porous stainless steel support and long term stability of metal-supported SOFC.

  • The corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel on both its fibrous and dispersed phase was investigated. These structures consist of various volume fraction and distribution of austenite structure, which were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The fibrous phase had higher austenite volume fraction than that of the dispersed phase at the same temperature. Corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel was evaluated through an immersion test and an impingement test, using 35% HCI and sea water, respectively. Super duplex stainless steel was compared with STS316L and STS304. The corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel was superior to ST316L and STS304. The dispersed phase of super duplex stainless steel was more stabilized than the fibrous phase in corrosion. The magnitude of corrosion rate was in order STS304, STS316L, fibrous phase of super duplex stainless steel and dispersed phase of super duplex stainless steel.

  • In cold-formed steel structures, such as trusses, wall frames and portal frames, the use of back-to-back built-up cold-formed stainless-steel lipped channels as compression members are becoming increasingly popular. The advantages of using stainless-steel as structural members are corrosion resistance and durability, compared with carbon steel. The AISI/ASCE Standard, SEI/ASCE-8-02 and AS/NZS do not include the design of stainless-steel built-up channels and very few experimental tests or finite element analyses have been reported in the literature for such back-to back cold-formed stainless-steel channels. Current guidance by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Australian and New Zealand (gAS/NZS) standards for built-up carbon steel sections only describe a modified slenderness approach, to consider the spacing of the intermediate fasteners. Thus, this paper presents a numerical investigation on the behavior of back-to-back cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels. Three different grades of stainless steel i.e., duplex EN1.4462, ferritic EN1.4003 and austenitic EN1.4404 have been considered. Effect of screw spacing on the axial strength of such built-up channels was investigated. As expected, most of the short and intermediate columns failed by either local-global or local-distortional buckling interactions, whereas the long columns, failed by global buckling. All three grades of stainless-steel stub columns failed by local buckling. A comprehensive parametric study was then carried out covering a wide range of slenderness and different cross-sectional geometries to assess the performance of the current design guidelines by AISI and AS/NZS. In total, 647 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, it was found that the AISI & AS/NZS are conservative by around 10 to 20% for cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels failed through overall buckling, irrespective of the stainless-steel grades. However, the AISI and AS/NZS can be un-conservative by around 6% for all three grades of stainless-steel built-up channels, which failed by local buckling.

  • Stainless steel-concrete composite beam has become an attractive structural form for offshore bridges and iconic high-rise buildings, owing to the superior corrosion resistance and excellent ductility of stainless steel material. In a composite beam, stainless steel shear connectors play an important role by establishing the interconnection between stainless steel beam and concrete slab. To enable the best use of high strength stainless steel shear connectors in composite beams, high strength concrete is recommended. To date, the application of stainless steel shear connectors in composite beams is still very limited due to the lack of research and proper design recommendations. In this paper, a total of seven pushout specimens were tested to investigate the load-slip behaviour of stainless steel shear connectors. A thorough discussion has been made on the differences between stainless steel bolted connectors and welded studs, in terms of the failure modes, load-slip behaviour and ultimate shear resistance. In parallel with the experimental programme, a finite element model was developed in ABAQUS to simulate the behaviour of stainless steel shear connectors, with which the effects of shear connector strength, concrete strength and embedded connector height to diameter ratio (h/d) were evaluated. The obtained experimental and numerical results were analysed and compared with existing codes of practice, including AS/NZS 2327, EN 1994-1-1 and ANSI/AISC 360-16. The comparison results indicated that the current codes need to be improved for the design of high strength stainless steel shear connectors. On this basis, modified design approaches were proposed to predict the shear capacity of stainless steel bolted connectors and welded studs in the composite beams.

  • Stainless steel bipolar plates have many advantage such as high electrical conductivity and mechanical strength and low fabrication cost. However, they need a passivation layer due to low corrosion resistance under PEM fuel cell operation condition. In this study, polyphenyene sulfide(PPS)/carbon composite coated stainless steel bipolar plates were fabricated by compression molding method after PPS/carbon composite sprayed on the stainless steel plate. PPS and carbon were chosen as the binder and conductive filler of passivation layer, respectively. The interfacial contact resistance and corrosion resistance of PPS/carbon composite coated stainless steel bipolar plates were investigated and compared to the stainless steel. The PPS/carbon composite coated stainless steel compared to stainless steel was improved interfacial contact resistance. The results of the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic measurements also showed that the PPS/carbon composite coated stainless steel did not corroded under PEM fuel cell operating conditions.

  • This article investigated the effects of stainless steel plate-patterns bonded to aluminum frypan on the thermal distortion and surface temperature of the frypan during gas or induction heating. Two different stainless steel plate-patterns were employed: type A contains only circular holes and type B has not only circular holes but also vacant spaces of 0.5 mm thick and 40 mm long straight line crossing 60 mm long curved line. The bottom of the frypan was distorted during heating when type A stainless steel plate-bonded frypan while no significant thermal distortion was observed for type B stainless steel plate-bonded frypan during heating. Temperature of the frypan surface showed the same trend during gas heating, irrespective of stainless steel plate-patterns. During induction heating, however, the frypan with type B stainless steel plate-pattern showed lower surface temperature than the frypan with type A stainless steel plate-pattern. It is concluded that Type B stainless steel plate-pattern with circular holes and vacant spaces of lines is very effective for minimizing a thermal distortion and lowering the surface temperature of an aluminum frypan during induction heating.
