  • This Paper proposes a vehicle detection system and a license plate recognition system from CCTV images installed on public roads. Since the environment of this system acquires the image in the general road environment, the stable condition applied to the existing vehicle entry / exit system is not given, and the input image is distorted and the resolution is irregular. At the same time, the viewing angle of the input image is more wide, so that the computation load is high and the recognition accuracy of the plate is likely to be lowered. In this paper, we propose an improved method to detect and recognize a license plate without a separate input control devices. The vehicle and license plate were detected based on the HOG feature descriptor, and the characters inside the license plate were recognized using the k-NN algorithm. Experimental environment was set up for the roads more than 45m away from the CCTV, Experiments were carried out on an entry vehicle capable of visually identifying license plate and Experimental results show good results of the proposed method.

  • The main objective of this study is to evaluate the preliminary landslide hazard based on the identification of geomorphological features, which are believed to be critical values in the initial state of landslides. Two methods, SINMAP and Planarity analyses, are used to simulate those characteristics where landslides are actually located. Results showed that both methods well discriminate geomorphic features between stable and unstable domains in the landslide areas. SINMAP analysis which is the consecutive model considering external factors like infiltration identifies the landslide hazard especially for debris flow type landslides better than plararity analysis focusing on a specific area. This analysis combined with other methods dealing with specific characteristics of geomorphological feature, the accurate landslide hazard will be evaluated.

  • Most natural deposits of sandy soil possess some degree of cementation resulting from the deposition and precipitation of cementing agents. The presence of cementation can have a significant influence on the stiffness and volume change behavior, and the strength of soils. An important feature of deposits of cemented sandy soils is their ability to remain stable in surprisingly high and almost vertical man-made cuts as well as natural slopes. Numerous field observations and studies of failures in slopes of cemented soils have reported that application of conventional analysis techniques of slope stability is inadequate. That is not only due to the fact that the failure surface of the slope is not circular, but also the fact that the average shear stress along the failure surface is much smaller than the shear strength measured in laboratory shear experiments. This observation alerts us to the fact that a mechanism different from conventional Mohr-Coulomb shear failure takes place, which may be related to fracture processes, which in turn are governed by fracture mechanics concepts and theory. In this study, steep slopes in cemented sand were assessed using fracture mechanics concepts. The results showed that FEM coupled with fracture mechanics concepts provides an excellent alternative in the design and safety assessment of earth structures in cemented soils.

  • Estimation of postmortem interval (PMI) is a key issue in the field of forensic pathology. With the availability of quantitative analysis of RNA levels in postmortem tissues, several studies have assessed the postmortem degradation of constitutively expressed RNA species to estimate PMI. However, conventional RNA quantification as well as biochemical and physiological changes employed thus far have limitations related to standardization or normalization. The present study focuses on an interesting feature of the subdomains of certain RNA species, in which they are site-specifically cleaved during apoptotic cell death. We found that the D8 divergent domain of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) bearing cell death-related cleavage sites was rapidly removed during postmortem RNA degradation. In contrast to the fragile domain, the 5' terminal region of 28S rRNA was remarkably stable during the postmortem period. Importantly, the differences in the degradation rates between the two domains in mammalian 28S rRNA were highly proportional to increasing PMI with a significant linear correlation observed in mice as well as human autopsy tissues. In conclusion, we demonstrate that comparison of the degradation rates between domains of a single RNA species provides quantitative information on postmortem degradation states, which can be applied for the estimation of PMI.

  • The structural vehicles are steel members of square or circle tube with definite shape. These members support various components and absorb impact energy to protect passengers during accidentswhen crash happen. Structural members need to be lightweight and stable. In this study, we do an impact simulation of a CFRP square member using finite element analysis program Ls-Dyna in order to predict fracture shape and energy absorb feature of CFRP member. Also, we make square member shape of CFRP and do an impact experiment. We compare the analytical and experimental results and consider the fracture shape and energy features of CFRP members.

  • A steam generator (boiler) in thermal power plants, consisting of more than 30,000 parts and components, can lead to the plant shutdown with damage to even the small part of the components; esp., like weld failures on boiler tubes. Consequently it is greatly demanded to improve the quality of the weld on the boiler tube for the stable operation of the power plants. Because of the feature of the welding, which is done past by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material that cools to become a strong coalescence, there is a great possibility that weld failures take place. As a result, it is regulated to make a non-destructive testing, like radiography test, to detect defects and flaws in the weld. The current film radiography test provides a lower image quality exceeding 2.0% of a basic quality level for a penetrameter, it is very likely to fail to detect micro defect. As a result, the prevention for the boiler tube failure has not been made effectively. In this study, computed radiography technology has been applied as a digital radiography test to the boiler tube weld, and Se-75 radiation source was used to improve the image quality, instead of Ir-192 source. As a result of this study, it is proven to save the time and cost for test and to enhance the quality level of penetrameter penetrating image, which enables to upgrade the quality of radiography test to the boiler tube weld.

  • This paper proposes a real time lane detection algorithm using LRF (Laser Range Finder) for autonomous navigation of a mobile robot. There are many technologies for safety of the vehicles such as airbags, ABS, EPS etc. The real time lane detection is a fundamental requirement for an automobile system that utilizes outside information of automobiles. Representative methods of lane recognition are vision-based and LRF-based systems. By the vision-based system, recognition of environment for three dimensional space becomes excellent only in good conditions for capturing images. However there are so many unexpected barriers such as bad illumination, occlusions, and vibrations that the vision cannot be used for satisfying the fundamental requirement. In this paper, we introduce a three dimensional lane detection algorithm using LRF, which is very robust against the illumination. For the three dimensional lane detections, the laser reflection difference between the asphalt and lane according to the color and distance has been utilized with the extraction of feature points. Also a stable tracking algorithm is introduced empirically in this research. The performance of the proposed algorithm of lane detection and tracking has been verified through the real experiments.

  • The most used tool for quality control is control chart in manufacturing industry. But it has limitations at current situation where most of manufacturing facilities are automated and several manufacturing processes have interdependent relationship such as CCM assembly line. To Solve problems, we propose quality management system based on data mining that are consisted of monitoring system where it monitors flows of processes at single window and feature extraction system where it predicts the yield of final product and identifies which processes have impact on the quality of final product. The quality management system uses decision tree, neural network, self-organizing map for data mining. We hope that the proposed system can help manufacturing process to produce stable quality of products and provides engineers useful information such as the predicted yield for current status, identification of causal processes for lots of abnormality.

  • Though there have been many methods to detect features in spatial domain, in the case of a compressed image it has to be decoded, processed and encoded again. Alternatively, we can manipulate a compressed image directly in the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain that has been used for compressing videos or images in the standards like MPEG and JPEG. In our previous work we proposed a model-based discontinuity evaluation technique in the DCT domain that had problems in the rotated or non-ideal discontinuities. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy filtering technique that consists of height fuzzification, direction fuzzification, and forty filtering of discontinuities. The enhancement achieved by the fuzzy tittering includes the linking, thinning, and smoothing of discontinuities in the DCT domain. Although the detected discontinuities are rough in a low-resolution image for the size (8${\times}$8 pixels) of the DCT block, experimental results show that this technique is fast and stable to enhance the qualify of discontinuities.

  • The biodegradable poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) microcapsules containing tocopherol were prepared by oil-in-water emulsion solvent evaporation method. The features of the microcapsules were investigated in the manufacturing conditions and degradation behaviors. The form and structural feature of the microcapsules were measured by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The surface free energy of the microcapsules was executed using contact angle measurement. As a result, the microcapsules were more stable and spherical with poly(vinyl alcohol) given in a surfactant. The surface free energy and crystallinity of microcapsules were decreased with increasing the core concentration, and degradation of PCL was occurred after 21 days. The release behaviors were examined by Uv/vis. spectrophotometer. It was found that the release rate of the microcapsules was increased with increasing the stirring rate, due to the increased interface between microcapsules and release media.
