  • The recent frequent heavy rainfall has caused an increased in soil erosion and the soil drain which drained soil has caused decreased in channel radius and environmental problems by turbidity. In this study, the optimum size of the sediment basin was tested with soil erosion estimated from the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) in the basin using by GIS data. The results show that the estimated soil erosion and the designed soil deposit are $72.1\;m^3$ and $85.0\;m^3$ respectively and the size of sediment basin is proper. In this study the water depth was calculated from the Hec-Ras model to test the stability of the bank and to prove submersion of the inside fields from stream overflow.

  • The construction of a submerged breakwater has become increasing due to their multiple effects on the coastal zone. Recently, marker rocks have been installed on the submerged breakwater to indicate its position to the vessels instead of buoy systems, since a buoy is not only improper for the ocean view, but also its mooring system may be damaged by the impulsive wave force caused by wave breaking on the breakwater. The accurate estimation of wave forces on such rocks is deemed necessary for their stability design. In this study, the characteristics of irregular wave forces acting on a marker rock, which was installed on a submerged breakwater, was investigated on the basis of laboratory experiments. It was revealed that the dimensionless highest one-third wave force tends to decrease with increasing the installation distance of a marker rock from the leading crown edge of a submerged breakwater. Also, the drag and inertia coefficients for irregular wave forces, which were obtained using the Morison equation, were investigated in relation to K.C. number.

  • The stability of the gravity quay wall against earthquakes is evaluated on the basis of the allowable displacement of the wall. To estimate the displacement caused by external forces, empirical equations based on the Newmark sliding block method or numerical analysis are widely used. In numerical analysis, it is possible to analyze precisely a complicated site and structure, but difficult to set the appropriate parameters and environments; there are limitations in obtaining reliable results, depending on one's level of expertise. The Newmark method, with only seismic motions, is widely used because it is simpler than numerical simulations when estimating permanent displacement. However, the empirical equations do not have any parameters for the response characteristics and sliding block of the structure, and sliding blocks being assumed as rigid bodies does not consider the nonlinear behavior of the soil and interaction with the structure. Therefore, in order to evaluate the seismic stability of the gravity quay wall, a newly-developed empirical equation is needed to overcome the above-mentioned limitations. In this study, numerical simulations are performed to analyze the response characteristics of the backfill of the structure, and to propose an optimal method of calculating the active area. For this purpose, finite element analyses were performed to analyze the response characteristics, and stress-strain relationships for various seismic motions. As a result, the response characteristics, sliding block, and failure surface of the backfill vary depending on the input seismic motions.

  • We developed a computer program (CDFlow v. 1.0) to design countermeasures against debris flows in natural terrain. The program can predict the probability of landslides occurring in natural terrain and can estimate the zone of damage caused by a debris flow. It can also be used to design the location and size of countermeasures against the debris flow. The program is run using the ArcGIS Engine, which is one of the most well-known Geographic Information System (GIS) tools for developers. The quasi-dynamic wetness index and the infinite slope stability equation were applied to predict landslide probability as a type of slope safety factor. The calculated safety factor was compared with the required safety factor, and areas of high probable potential for landslides were then selected and represented on the digital map. The volume of debris flow was estimated using these areas of high probable potential for landslides and soil depth. The accumulated volume of debris flow can be calculated along the flow channel. To assess the accuracy of the program, it was applied to a real landslide site at Deoksan-ri, Inje-gun, Kangwon-Province, where four debris barriers have been installed in the watershed of the site. The results of soil tests and a field survey indicate that the program has great potential for estimating probable landslide areas and the trajectory of debris flows. Calculation of the capacity volume of existing debris barriers revealed that they had insufficient capacity to store the calculated amount of debris flow. Therefore, this program enables a rational estimation of the optimal location and size of debris barriers.

  • Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is a crucial riverine parameter in terms that it can be utilized for analyzing sediment transport, stability assessment of river and structure and so on. However, in case of domestic, sediment discharge data are not enough because of using conventional sediment samplers. This study aimed at developing a practical technique for estimating suspended sediment concentration in high spatial and temporal resolution by building relationship between acoustic backscatter (or SNR) from H-ADCP with actually observed data using LISST-100X. In this regard, a dedicated correction algorithm was proposed particularly for the adapted H-ADCP (SonTek SL-3000). Then, a SNR-SSC relation was built based upon a real-scale field experiment, where both H-ADCP and LISST-100X were concurrently operated to observe SNR and SSC, respectively. The coefficient of determination for the developed regression equation of SNR-SSC relation was around 0.85~0.88, thereby the relation could be evaluated to be highly correlated. The result of this study might be potentially applied for real-time and simultaneous observation of SSC when H-ADCP could be applied.

  • The stability of the adjcent structures or slopes under blasting is typically evaluated using an empirical vibration attenuation curve or dynamic numerical analysis. To perform a dynamic analysis, it is necessary to determine the blast load and the damping ratio of rock mass. Various empirical methods have been proposed for the blast load. However, a study on representative values of damping ratio of a rock mass has not yet been performed. Therefore, the damping ratio was either ignored or selected without a clear basis in performing a blast analysis. Selection of the dampring ratio for the rock mass is very difficult because the vibration propagation is influenced by the layout and properties of the rock joints. Besides, the vibration induced by blasting is propagated spherically, whereas plane waves are generated by an earthquake. Since the geometrical spreading causes additional attenuation, the damping ratio should be adjusted in the case of a 2D plane strain analysis. In this study, we proposed equivalent damping ratios for use in continuum 2D plane strain analyses. To this end, we performed 2D dynamic analyses for a wide range of rock stiffness and investigated the characteristics of blast vibration propagation. Based on numerical simulations, a correlation between the attenuation equation, shear wave velocity, and equivalent damping ratio of rock mass is presented. This novel approach is the first attempt to select the damping ratio from an attenuation relationship. The proposed chart is easy to be used and can be applied in practice.

  • In this paper, we have verified a low-voltage EM(elasto-magnetic) sensing technique for tensile force management of PSC(prestressed concrete) internal tendon in order to apply the technique to actual construction sites where stable power supply is difficult. From observation of past domestic and overseas PSC structural accident cases, it was found that PS tension is very important to maintain structural stability. In this paper, we have tried to measure the tensile force from a magnetic hysteresis curve through EM sensors according to voltage value by using relation between magnetostriction and stress of ferromagnetic material based on elastic-magnetic theory. For this purpose, EM sensor of double cylindrical coil type was fabricated and tensile force test equipment for PS tendon using hydraulic tensioning device was constructed. The experiment was conducted to confirm relationship between changes of permeability and tensile force from the measurement results of the maximum / minimum voltage amount. The change of magnetic hysteresis curve with magnitude of tensile force was also measured by reducing amount of voltage step by step. As a result, the slope of estimation equation in accordance with magnitude of magnetic field decreases with the voltage reduction. But it was confirmed a similar pattern of change of magnetic permeability for the magnetic hysteresis loop. So, in this study, it is considered that it is possible to manage the tensions of PSC internal tendon using EM sensing technique in low-voltage state.
