  • Fe compounds of volcanic basalt samples distributed at the Hantan riverside in Cheorwon were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. We found that samples were typical basic rock which consisted of augite, anorthite, albite and sanidine etc. They had the total amount of iron compounds including hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) varies from 6.20 w% to 12.8 w% depending on the different regions by XRF. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of the samples were consisted of three doublets. The balance state of Fe ions of all samples were chiefly $Fe^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ ratios were 2.27~3.42.

  • Nano-sized manganese ferrite powders and films, $MnFe_2O_4$, were fabricated by the sol-gel method, and the effects of annealing temperature on the crystallographic and magnetic properties were studied by using X-ray diffractometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy of powder samples annealed above 523 K indicated the presence of spinel structure, and the film samples annealed above 773 K also had spinel structure. The particle size increased with the annealing temperature. For the powder samples, the Mossbauer spectra annealed above 573 K could be fitted as the superposition of two Zeeman sextets due to the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of $Fe^{3+}$ ions. Using the M$\"{o}$ssbauer subspectrum area ratio the cation distribution could be written as ($Mn_{0.52}Fe_{0.48}$) $[Mn_{0.48}Fe_{1.52}]$ $O_4$. However the spectrum annealed at 523 K only showed as a doublet due to a superparamagnetic phase. As the annealing temperature was increased, the saturation magnetization and the corecivity of the powder samples increased, as did the coercivity of film samples.

  • Ba-Ferrite thin films were prepared on $A1_2O_3$ substrate by a pulsed laser deposition system and characterized by SEM, $M\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy and VSM. The appropriate conditions of pulsation in Ba-ferrite was the oxygen pressure of 0.1 Torr at a substrate temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ and the thickness was variable with the deposition time. Ba-ferrite crystals had the forms of hexagonal plate in the 5 minute deposited film and the needle grains coexisted with the increasing film thickness. $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy assured that the direction of atomic spin in Fe ion tends to normal to the substrate in the hexagonal plate. The VSM curves have the two types hysteresis of hexagonal and needle phase.

  • The crystallographic and magnetic properties of gallium-substituted cobalt ferrite ($CoGa_xFe_{2-x}O_4$) were investigated. The new material was synthesized using conventional ceramic methods, with gallium substituted for ferrite in the range of x = 0.0 to 1.0, in steps of 0.2. X-ray diffraction and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy were used to confirm the presence of crystallized particles in the $CoGa_xFe_{2-x}O_4$ ferrite powders. All of the samples exhibited a single phase with a spinel structure, and the lattice parameters decreased as the gallium content increased. The particle size of the samples also decreased as gallium increased. For $x{\leq}0.4$, the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra of $CoGa_xFe_{2-x}O_4$ could be fitted with two Zeeman sextets, which are the typical spinel ferrite spectra of $Fe^{3+}$ with A- and B-sites. However, for $x{\geq}0.6$, the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra could be fitted with two Zeeman sextets and one doublet. The variation in the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer parameters and the absorption area ratio indicated a cation distribution of $(Co_{0.2-0.2x}Ga_xFe_{0.8-0.6x})[Co_{0.8+0.2x}Fe_{1.2-0.4x}]O_4$, and the magnetic behavior of the samples suggested that the increase in gallium content led to a decrease in the saturation magnetization and in the coercivity.

  • $Ni_{1-x}Mg_xFe_2O_4$ ferrite system was studied by using X-ray diffraction and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The samples were prepared by ceramic sintering method with Mg content x. The X-ray diffraction patterns of samples show phase of cubic spinel structure. There are no remarkable changes of lattice constants in $Ni_{1-x}Mg_xFe_2O_4$ ferrite system. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra were consisted of two sets of six lines, respectively, corresponding to $Fe^{3+}$ at tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The magnetic hyperfine field of samples was decreased as increasing Mg contents x in both sites and it was shown Yafet-Kittel magnetic structure. $NiFe_2O_4$ was shown complete inverse spinel, but $NiFe_2O_4$ was shown partial inverse spinel which absorption area ratio (oct/tet) was 1.449 in $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrum.

  • The detailed crystal chemistry of ilmenite from the Hadong massif was studied by the EPMA, M ssbauer spectroscopy, and Rietveld structural refinement using X-ray powder diffraction data. The ilmenite-bearing anorthosite shows complicated mineral assemblage which consists of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, hornblende, biotite, chlorite, apatite, allanite, and zircon. Anorthite is andesine in composition (Ab 28-57), and clinopyroxene drops in ferro-hypersthene (Fs 62-70). Ilmenite is trigonal symmetry with R space group, whose structure shows the alternation of Fe2+ (M1 site) octahedral layer and Ti (M2 site) layer along c axis. M ssbauer spectroscopy indicates that there are three doubles which assigned to couple of Fe2+($\delta$=0.812, 0.890mm/sec) and one Fe3+($\delta$=0.303mm/sec) in octahedral sites. Their Fe3+/$\Sigma$Fe is 0.065 and chemical formula is established as Fe2+0.94Fe3+0.07Ti0.97O3 using both EPMA and M ssbauer analysis. Rietveld structural refinement reveals that site occupancies of Fe in M1 and Ti in M2 are 91.2% and 89.4%, respectively. This implies that Ti and Fe2+ are alternatively occupy M1 and M2 sites. In addition, smaller M2 site is more preferable to Fe3+ occupancy over M1.

  • Magnetic particles in a novel, wound-healing ointment were studied using M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy and VSM to estimate the stability of the properties of the magnetic particles. The isomer shifts of $Fe_3O_4(A)$ were found to be 0.49-0.56 mm/s relative to iron metal, this indicates that the iron ions in $Fe_3O_4(A)$ are $Fe^{3+}$. On the other hand, the isomer shifts of $Fe_3O_4(B)$ were found to be 0.91-1.13 mm/s relative to iron metal, this shows that the ion state of $Fe_3O_4(B)$ is a mixed state of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$. It is noted that this composition, as well as that of the initial pure component in the form of a highly dispersed fraction (${\sim}10\;{\AA}$), differs from the stoichiometric one. It was found that the area ratio of the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer subspectra of $Fe_3O_4(A)$ / $Fe_3O_4(B)$ taken at 87 and 181 K linearly increased in comparison to the initial pure magnetic particles, but the rate of increase of the area ratio at 181 K was about two times that at 87 K. From the magnetic hyperfine field, despite their small size, the particles exhibit no superparamagnetism.

  • This study was aimed to study the effect of Zn content on the hyperfine parameters and the structural variation of $Ni_{1-x}Zn_xFe_2O_4$ for x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8. To achieve this, a sol-gel route was used for the preparation of samples and the obtained ferrites were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The formation of spinel phase without any impurity peak was identified by X-ray diffraction of all the samples. Moreover, the estimated crystallite size by X-ray line broadening indicates a decrease with increasing Zn content. This result was in agreement with the scanning electron microscopy result, indicating the reduction in grain growth with further zinc substitution. The room-temperature $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra show that the hyperfine fields at both the A and B sites decreased with increasing Zn content; however, the rate of reduction is not the same for different sites. Moreover, the best fit parameter showed that the quadrupole splitting values of B site increased from the pure nickel ferrite to the sample with x = 0.8.

  • The polycrystalline sample of $Ba_2Co_{1.5}Mg_{0.5}Fe_{11.88}Ga_{0.12}O_{22}$ Y-type hexaferrite, doped with Ga-cation, was prepared by using the solid-state reaction method. The crystalline structure of sample was investigated by x-ray diffractometer (XRD), and the magnetic properties of sample were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrometer. The crystal structure of prepared sample was determined to be rhombohedral with space group R-3m. From the temperature dependence of the magnetization curves under 100 Oe between 4.2 and 740 K, two temperature-dependent magnetic transitions occurred in the $Ba_2Co_{1.5}Mg_{0.5}Fe_{11.88}Ga_{0.12}O_{22}$ sample. $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of the sample were analyzed at various temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 620 K, and the $Ba_2Co_{1.5}Mg_{0.5}Fe_{11.88}Ga_{0.12}O_{22}$ sample showed abrupt changes in $H_{hf}$ and $E_Q$ at 200 K, indicating the spin transition effect. We have also determined the magnetic transition temperature $T_C$, in addition to the temperature dependent magnetization and ZVC measurements.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the magnetic property change of the nuclear reactor vessel steel irradiated by fast neutrons using $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, and the effects of the defects produced by neutron irradiation on the changes using X-ray diffraction. The specimens, fabricated with the dimension of $23mm{\times}18mm{\times}70{\mu}m$, were irradiated by neutron fluence from $10^{12}n/cm^2\;to\;10^{18}n/cm^2$ at 343K. Throughout the experiments, it is understood that (1) the X-ray diffraction measurement shows that the change of crystal nature is started at the irradiation of $10^{16}n/cm^2$ and a crystal structure has been severely damaged at the irradiation over $10^{17}n/cm^2$, (2) the analysis of the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra has shown that magnetic transition phenomena occur at the irradiation over $10^{17}n/cm^2$ and (3) both methods can be utilized as nondestructive test methods for the embrittlement evaluation of materials irradiated by fast neutrons.
