Oxidation models of a rotor bar and end ring segment in an induction motor are presented to simulate the behavior of an induction machine working with oxidized rotor parts which are modeled as rotor faults in progress. The leakage inductance and resistance of the rotor parts arc different from normal values because of the oxidation process. The impedance variations modify the current density and magnetic flux which pass through the oxidized parts. Consequently, it causes the rotor asymmetry which induces abnormal harmonics in the stator current spectra of the faulty machine. The leakage inductances of the oxidation models are derived by the Ampere's law. Using the proposed oxidation models, the rotor bar and end ring faults in progress can be modeled and simulated with the motor current signature analysis (MCSA). In addition, the oxidation process of the rotor bar and end ring segment can motivate the rotor asymmetry, which is induced by electromagnetic imbalances, and it is one of the major motor faults. Results of simulations and experiments are compared to each other to verify the accuracy of the proposed models. Experiments are achieved using 3.7 kW, 3-phase, and squirrel cage induction motors with a motor drive inverter.

This paper presents an active and reactive power compensator for the wind power system with squirrel-cage induction generator. The output power of a wind power system changes irregularly according to the variation of wind speed. The developed system is able to continuously compensate the active and reactive power. The 3-phase inverter operates for the compensation of reactive power, while the DC/DC converter with super-capacitors operates for the compensation of active power. The operational feasibility of the proposed model was verified by simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC and the feasibility of hardware implementation was confirmed by experimental works with a scaled hardware model. The proposed compensator can be expected that developed system may be used to compensated the abrupt power variation due to sudden change of wind speed or sudden power-drop by tower effect. It can be also applied for the distributed generation and the Micro-Grid.
Induction motors are widely used due to their rugged, robust and easy to care features. Since they are heavily used in industry, testing of three phase induction motors have play a vital role. In order to determine motor equivalent circuit parameters, efficiency of motor, squirrel caged laboratory sized an induction motor test setup is prepared. It is suitable for the induction motor with the frame size of 100 and 112. A virtual Instrumentation typed engineering workbench (called as LabVIEW) software packet, is utilized as a graphical user interface program. Motor input power is measured by measuring the input voltage, current and power factor with the help of hall effect typed voltage and current transformers. Also, the output power is measured by measuring the speed and torque with the help of an encoder and torque sensor. All outputs of the voltage and current transformer, encoder and temperature, torque sensors are given to the Data Acquisition Card (DAQ) which acquires the data for processing and then the equivalent circuit parameters, efficiency, performance and loading characteristics are found out, using LabVIEW based user interface. It is suggested to use this test rig for the quality control of produced motors in industry, and an educational experiment setup in the school laboratories.

This paper presents a renewable energy configuration plan of Micro grid in Gapa Island. To analyze the characteristics of Micro grid, BESS (Battery Energy Storage System), PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) and SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) are first modelled. The PMSG and SCIG will operate with basis on the real power curve. when the total power demand is larger than the total power generation, the BESS will be operated and the SOC (State Of Charge) is reduced. If the value of SOC could drop down to limited value, the system may be broken because of the voltage drop of BESS. To solve this problem, a DG (Diesel Generator) is used to charge the BESS and keep the voltage value of BESS with in a allowance limit. This paper represents simulation result when PMSG, SCIG connected to the Micro grid installed in Gapa Island. The simulation is carry out by using PSCAD/EMTDC program with actual line constant and transformer parameter in Gapa Island.

In crane drives, DC motor has been most widely used due to simple control characteristic and favorable transient behavior. Nowadays, however, the squirrel cage induction motor is known as an attractive candidate due to elimination of all sliding electrical contacts, resulting in an exceedingly simple and rugged construction. Especially, in hoist application, the smooth torque control and four quadrant operation are essential. In this paper, an operation of dual inverters with common DC bus fed by vector controlled induction motor is described. Single DSP is employed as a main processor to control dual inverters and communicates each input/output signal with PLC. As well as giving a detailed expression, full simulation and experimental results are presented.

This paper propose a improved direct torque control(DTC) system for improving operation of five-phase squirrel-cage induction motor(IM). A five-phase IM drives present unique characteristics due to the additional degrees of freedom and also drives possess many others advantage compared with the traditional three-phase motor drive system, such as reducing a amplitude of torque pulsation and increasing the reliability. In order to maximize the torque per ampere, the proposed motor has concentrated windings and the produced back-electromotive force(EMF) is almost trapezoidal, and the motor is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus third harmonic of currents, there is necessary to controlled 3rd harmonic current. Also a DTC method is advantageous when it is applied to the five-phase IM, because the five-phase inverter provides 32 space vectors in comparison to 8 space voltage vectors into the three-phase inverter drive system. For presenting the superior performance of the proposed DTC, experimental results of speed control are presented using a 32-bit fixed point TMS320F2812 DSP with 1.5[hp] IM.

The characteristics of the stator current and torque of a small three- phase squirrel cage induction motor and studied experimentally under the situation of a single-phase operation due to various causes. Through the experiments, the torque-slip and current-slip curve of single-phase circuit as well as three-phase circuit are obtained and the needed constants are determined. The stator current and torque are calculated by the current and torque equations derived by the unbalanced circuit theory. The numerical values obtained from the above methods are compared with the experimental values under the same conditions. The results of the study are summerized as follow; 1) The values computed by the unbalanced circuit theory generally come to approach the values recorded through experiments. 2) Near the rated load, speed drop is less than 1.2 per cent of the speed of three-phase induction motor and torque reduces less than 3 per cent of it of three-phase induction motor when three-phase induction motor is run under a single-phase. On the other hand, the stator current in a single-phase circuit is more than 1.9 times of it in three-phase circuit. 3) The stalling torque in a single-phase circuit is reduced to about 41 per cent of it in three-phase circuit while the corresponding slip is moved toward the synchroneous speed and the corresponding stator current is increased.

Heat transfer data are presented which describe characteristics of the transitional thermal boundary layers on the NACA0012 airfoil with upstream wakes. The wakes are generated periodically by circular cylindrical rods which rotate around the airfoil like a squirrel cage. The unsteady wakes simulate those produced by the upstream rotating blade rows in axial turbomachines. The pressure or suction side of the airfoil is also simulated according to the rotating direction of circular rods. As the Reynolds number and the number of rotating rods increase, the boundary layer transition occurs earlier and the Nusselt number increases. The difference of heat transfer coefficient is less on the pressure side than on the suction side. At a constant Reynolds number, the Nusselt number is larger and smaller, respectively, before and after transition as the Strouhal number increases.

In this paper, a Pl controlled feedback closed-loop voltage regulation scheme of the three-phase squirrel cage rotor self-excited induction generator (SEIG) driven by a variable-speed prime mover (VSPM) such as a wind turbine is designed on the basis of the static VAR compensator (SVC) and discussed in experiment fer the promising stand-alone power independent conditioner. The simulation and experimental results of the three-phase SEIG with the simple SVC controller for its stabilized voltage regulation prove the practical effectiveness of the additional SVC control loop scheme including the PI controller with fast response characteristics and steady-sate performance improvement.
