  • The Back garden in Wanggung-ri Site, Iksan clearly presents an aspect of the landscape gardening techniques of the Baekje, which are significantly unique in the landscape gardening history of East Asia as the structure connected to the main garden through a complex waterway system on a hill. The rear garden has a complex waterway system comprising a large inverted U-shape waterway and its branch waterways, sinuous waterway and water catchment system to enhance the landscape effect with a minimum amount of water on a hill, reducing damage by floods in the case of heavy rain and securing the amount of water required by the main space in the palace. A landscape element using various kinds and sizes of oddly shaped rocks decorated the water catchment area inside or around the large inverted U-shape waterway. On the top of the hill, the center in the Back garden, a building site in the size of 4 Kans each on the front and side was made on a square base surrounded by a round base stone. The building was identified on a space partially surrounded by the rectangular stonework on the left and right slope of the hill. While the functions and roles of the rectangular stonework are not accurately identified due to the poor conditions of the present site, the stonework may be related to the building inside it. The back garden in Wanggung-ri Site, Iksan has a winding pond-shaped waterway to pull or push water into or out of the garden in a rectangular pond shape, which was a conventional landscape gardening technique during the Baekje period. Since the main garden and the back garden in Wanggung-ri Site, Iksan form a systematic connection system, this paper tried to newly establish the main garden inside Iksan Wanggungseong as the 'royal garden'.

  • Design of a shape transition nozzle is carried out as a part of building a lab-scale supersonic combustion experimental equipment. In order to connect directly the circular shaped vitiation air heater to the square shaped scramjet combustor, area change is evaluated by using the method of characteristics. Shape transition function is introduced to control the transition rate. Boundary layer correction was made through the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics with the assessment on the several shape transition functions. The shape transition nozzle is proved minimizing the growth of boundary layer at the center of the rectangular nozzle surfaces that caused by the pressure gradient at the corners of the rectangular nozzle and the following recirculation regions.

  • A supersonic nozzle specially is one of the important part in a supersonic turbine usually adapted the impulse type, because the flow acceleration in the turbine theoretically is done only in the nozzle. The present study deals with numerical flow analysis to investigate the effect of nozzle shapes on the performance characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine. The flow analysis was performed for four different nozzle shapes. The shapes of the nozzles are circular, square, straight rectangular and bent rectangular nozzles. The results of the flow analysis showed that the aerodynamic loss of turbine is highly affected by the nozzle shapes, and the partial admission loss is also highly depended on nozzle shapes. Specially, bent rectangular nozzle had the best performance among the nozzle shapes

  • The present study investigates the employing of piezoelectric patches in active control of a sandwich plate. Indeed, the active control and optimal patch distribution on this structure are presented together. A sandwich plate with honeycomb core and composite reinforced by carbon nanotubes in facesheet layers is considered so that the optimum position of actuator/sensor patches pair is guaranteed to suppress the vibration of sandwich structures. The sandwich panel consists of a search space which is a square of 200 × 200 mm with a numerous number of candidates for the optimum position. Also, different dimension of square and rectangular plates to obtain the optimal placement of piezoelectric actuator/senor patches pair is considered. Based on genetic algorithm and LQR, the optimum position of patches and fitness function is determined, respectively. The present study reveals that the efficiency and performance of LQR control is affected by the optimal placement of the actuator/sensor patches pair to a large extent. It is also shown that an intelligent selection of the parent, repeated genes filtering, and 80% crossover and 20% mutation would increase the convergence of the algorithm. It is noted that a fitness function is achieved by collection actuator/sensor patches pair cost functions in the same position (controllability). It is worth mentioning that the study of the optimal location of actuator/sensor patches pair is carried out for different boundary conditions of a sandwich plate such as simply supported and clamped boundary conditions.

  • The interfacial shear stress is experimentally investigated for co-current air-water stratified flow in inclined rectangular channels having a length of 1854mm, width of 120mm and height of 40mm at almost atmospheric pressure. Experiments are carried out in several inclinations from $0^{\circ}\;up\;to\;10^{\circ}$. The local film thickness and the wave height are measured at three locations, i.e., L/H = 8,23, and 40. According to the inclination angle, the experimental data are categorized into two groups; nearly horizontal data group ($0^{\circ}\;{\leq}\;{\theta}\;{\leq}\;0.7^{\circ}$), and inclined channel data group ($0.7^{\circ}\;{\leq}\;{\theta}\;{\leq}\;10^{\circ}$). Experimental observations for nearly horizontal data group show that the flow is not fully developed due to the water level gradient and the hydraulic jump within the channel. For the inclined channel data group, a dimensionless wave height, $\Delta$h/h, is empirically correlated in terms of $Re_{G}$ and h/H. A modified root-mean-square wave height is proposed to consider the effects of the interfacial and wave propagation velocities. It is found that an equivalent roughness has a linear relationship with the modified root-mean-square wave height and its relationship is independent of the inclination.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer without additional external power in the case of rectangular air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface. In an attempt to enhance the heat transfer rate in two-dimensional impinging jet, the technique used in the present study was placement of square rod bundles as a turbluence promoter in front of the heat transfer surface. The effects of the clearance between the flat plate and square rod, and the nozzle exit velocity on the heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally. The results obtained through this study were summerized as follows. High heat transfer enhancement was achived by means of flow acceleration and thinning of boundary layer by inserting rods in front of the heating flat plate. The smaller the clearance between rod and heating plate was, the larger heat transfer effect became. Average Nusselt number reached maximum at $Re=5.76{\times}10^4$ and C=1㎜ and the enhancement rate of heat transfer became maxium at this condition with the enhancement ratio as high as about 1.427 when normalized by the flat plate value. The correlating equation of average Nusselt number and Reynolds number was obtained, which is $\bar{N}uo=1.324{\cdot}Re^{0.459}{\cdot}(C/A)^{-0.034}$.

  • Flexible roll forming is an advanced sheet-metal-forming process that allows the production of parts with various cross-sections. During the flexible process, material is subjected to three-dimensional deformation such as transverse bending, inhomogeneous elongations, or contraction. Because of the effects of process variables on the quality of the roll-formed products, the approaches used to investigate the roll-forming process have been largely dependent on experience and trial- and-error methods. Web-warping is one of the major shape defects encountered in flexible roll forming. In this study, an SVR model was developed to predict the web-warping during the flexible roll forming process. In the development of the SVR model, three process parameters, namely the forming-roll speed condition, leveling-roll height, and bend angle were considered as the model inputs, and the web-warping height was used as the response variable for three blank shapes; rectangular, concave, and convex shape. MATLAB software was used to train the SVR model and optimize three hyperparameters (λ, ε, and γ). To evaluate the SVR model performance, the statistical analysis was carried out based on the three indicators: the root-mean-square error, mean absolute error, and relative root-mean-square error.

  • As it is known, laminated composite materials are increasingly used in many technological applications, and in some instance, cutouts must be made into laminated panels for practical reasons, changing the stress distribution. The present study deals with the determination of the stress concentration factor that holes of square shape cause in an orthotropic plate subjected to distributed in - plane loading. Square holes of rounded corners in a rectangular plate are considered, and the effect of different combinations of axial and tangential forces applied to its middle plane at the external edges, is studied. The mutually perpendicular axes, which define the principal axes of orthotropy, are assumed in many different directions referred to the sides of the plate. Numerical experiments by means of a finite element code is performed, evaluating the influence of the fiber orientation with respect to the edges of the plate and the characteristics of the orthotropic materials since such structures do not exhibit easily predictable behavior.

  • The backward tracing scheme(BWT) of the finite element method has been extended lot the design of sheet blank in three-dimensional deformation. Originally the scheme was developed for preform design in bulk forming, and applied to several forming processes successfully. Its key concept is to trace backward from the final desirable configuration to an intermediate preform or initial blocker. A program for initial blank design in sheet forming which contains the capabilities of forward loading simulation by the finite element method and backward tracing simulation, has been developed and proved the effectiveness by applying to a square cup stamping process. In the blank design of square cup stamping, the backward tracing program can produce an optimum blank configuration which forms a sound net-shape cup product without machining after forming. For the confirmation of the analytic result derived from the backward tracing simulations as well as forward loading simulations, a series of experiment were carried out. The experiments include the first trial sheet forming process with a rectangular blank, an improved process with a modified blank preform and the final process with an optimum blank resulted from the backward tracing scheme. The experiments show that the backward tracing scheme has been implemented successfully in blank design of sheet metal forming.
