Effect of freezing on the hydration rate and growth characteristics of bean sprout of two domestic cultivars of soybean, Eunha beans and Taegwang beans, was investigated. Freezing of the soybeans at $-80^{\circ}C$ affected characteristics of the hydration and growth of soybean sprout of the beans. Hydration rate of the frozen beans depended on the hydration temperature. It decreased up to 50% at lower than $60^{\circ}C$ of hydration temperature, but it did not decrease at higher than $60^{\circ}C$. Activation energies of frozen Eunha and Taegwang beans were 39.79 and 39.25 kJ/mol, respectively. Kinetic compensation effect between activation energy values and the pre-exponential factor for the hydration of soybeans with or without freezing was observed. Germination rate and thickness of the bean sprout increased by freezing, however, yield and weight were not affected by freezing.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of slow-release fertilizer application on quality elevation of onion (Allium cepa L.) in southwestern sea. The slow-release fertilizers used were NIAST (National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology) I, II, CDU (Crotonylidene Diurea), UF (Urea-Formaldehydes), and IBDU (Isobutylidene Diurea) 30, 50. Growth of the onion plant treated with slow-release fertilizer showed better than the control. However, a rate of infected plant to downy mildew was low as compared with control. Chlorophyll and total nitrogen contents were high in control, whereas firmness, soluble solid content, number and thickness of scaly leaves were high in slow-release fertilizer plot. In early maturing onion, total marketable bulb yield was higher in slow-release fertilizer plot than all other fertilizer treatments. Total marketable bulb yield in late maturing onion treated with slow-release fertilizer was slightly decreased. Decaying loss and the rate of sprouting during storage period decreased in slow-release fertilizer application. In summary, application of slow-release fertilizer increased marketable yield, storability after harvest and also reduced labor needs for top dressing.

To elucidate the preservative characteristics of chestnuts, three varieties, Ungi, Okkang and Chuckpa, were stored in cellar, polyethylen film packing, and box with or without $\gamma-irradiation$, and chemical compositions, rates of sprouting and rotting were determined during the period of storage. The chemical compositions of raw chestnuts were: moisture, 59 to 63%; total sugar, 28 to 29%; reducing sugar, 0.1 to 0.2%; crude fiber, 0.6 to 0.9%; crude protein, 3.5%; vitamin C, 27 to 28mg%; and tannin, 50 to 58mg%. Total sugar and vitamin C were decreased during the period of storage, and of reducing sugar and tannin were increased. The rates after 6 months of storage after three vareitia were; 93 to 100% by the cellar storage; 35 to 57% by the box storage without $\gamma-irradiation$ and 1 to 4% with $\gamma-irradiation$; and none by the polyethylene film packing. The sprouting rate in Chuckpa decreased markedly as compared with the other two varieties. The rotting rates when stored for 6 months were: 4 to 6% by the box storage without $\gamma-irradiation$ and 7 to 12% with $\gamma-irradiation$; 5 to 8% by the polyethylene film packing; and 30 to 54% by the cellar storage. The rotting rate in Chuckpa was lower than the other varieties during the period.
The aim of this work was to investigate how the mulberry shoots grew well when the mulberry branches were cut down, in hight, 1/3, $\frac{1}{2}$ and 2/3 of them, respectively, just before the Spring budding. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The rate of un-sprouted buds decreased sharply down as much as half of the control if the mulberry branches were cut off. The treatment, 1/3, was best one of various cut down sizes and the un-sprouted buds concentrated on the lower parts of the branches. 2. Even though the branches were cut down, at first it seemed flat to accelerate the sprouting of buds, but rather to have a tendency to become late. The speed of leaf growth, however, became faster after the sprouting. It took 7~9 days from the beginning of buddings to the 5th full grown leaf, and.7 days for the shortest one in the treatment, 2/3, when compared with 16 days of the control. 3. If the branches were cut down, the growth of the new sprouts was accelerated. For 45 days (on 5th of May to on 10th of June), therefore. the shoots had grown up to 1.6~2.5 times of the control, 34cm long. The shoots of which the branches were cut down at 2/3 of them were longest (83cm). Furthermore. the speed of shoot growth of cut-down branches was faster than that of the control. 4. In the increased rate of the number of the mulberry leaves, there was not significant difference between the control and the treatments. 5. The total amount of shoot growth showed considerably much more in the treatments than in the control. The successing growing shoots of treatment, 2/3 were little in a number but longest per one shoot in mean shoot length. 6. It seems to be much available that we may cut down branches at 2/3 of them in order to get the scions for the cutting as soon as possible.
In order to develop the commercial storage method of chestnut by irradiation combined with natural low temperature, a chestnut variety Ok-gwang was stored in a natural low temperature storage room ($450{\times}650{\times}250$ cmH; year-round temperature change, $2-17^{\circ}C$; R.H., 80-85%) on batch scale followed by irradiation with optimum dose level. Sprouting rate of chestnut was 100% after seven month storage in control whereas that of 20-25 Krad irradiated group was only 5-15%. In comparison of rotting rate, weight loss and texture, 25 Krad irradiated group was better than that of control. Moisture and reducing sugar were increased in contrast with the decrease of total sugar during nine month storage and these changes were more remarkable in control. Ascorbic acid content was slightly decreased both in control and irradiated group; more decrement was noticed in control.

Background : Considerable time and effort is required to develop new Panax ginseng varieties. Ginseng breeders have been developing techniques to shorten the breeding cycle to resolve this problem. In this study, we investigated the effects of adding $GA_3$ and alternating temperature (AT, $2^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}-2^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}2^{\circ}C$) on breaking bud dormancy in the varieties (Chungsun and Sunun) of ginseng root. Methods and Results : The $GA_3$ soaking treatment and AT were applied to one year old roots, which greatly accelerated the emergence of new buds. In one year old roots, new buds emerged from the 4th day post transplanting and after breaking dormancy with $GA_3$ and AT treatments. The emergence of new buds was completed within two weeks. The rate of bud emergence for Chungsun was 60% - 98% over 15 - 60 days after the AT and $GA_3$ treatments. The emergence rate of Sunun was 46% - 92%. Normal growth of the ginseng seedling was observed in spite of the early breaking of bud dormancy by combined $GA_3$ and AT treatments. Conclusions : $GA_3$ and AT treatments shortened the dormancy period and facilitated the stable emergence of ginseng seedlings. However, some plants suffered deformities and early sprouting owing to the combined $GA_3$ and AT treatments. Early sprouting was free from dormancy after leaf fall from the of aerial part of the plant.
This study was carried out to produce the grafts of Juglans sinensis by juvenile grafting method which epicotyl of newly germinated seeds were used as stocks and juvenile fresh shoots were used as scion. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. When plastic tube installed covering up seed with soil up to 6cm height for diameter increment of epicotyl, the epicotyl can be grown up to thickness of 10mm. 2. When the soft fruit branches and the soft water sprout with the terminal bud 8cm to 12cm long were used as scions, the survival rates showed 90 Percent. 3. The optimum date for making juvenile grafts was around the 20th of May, and the survival rates of grafted seedlings showed 86 percent in average. 4. The grafted seedlings showed first sprouting the 15th of June, that is 25 days after making graft, and the sprouting rate was 72 percent. 5. The height-growth of grafted seedlings finished at the end of July, and diameter growth lasted into the end of October. 6. There was positive correlation between the height of grafted seedlings and the diameter at root collar. 7. In general, it takes two years to make plantable graft seedlings from hardwood scion and stock, but the juvenile graft seedlings can be easily obtained in a year and so it seems to be economic.
The various cultural practices of bulbils were tested for seed tuber production in Chinese yam (Dioscorea batatas Decne.). To obtain amount of seed tuber, yam bulbils were sowed from early April to early May. The late sowing reduced average tuber weight, and consequently the amount of small tubers less than 20g increased highly. The optimum seeding rate of bulbils was 200 kg/10 a for production of seed-tubers. The average tuber weight was decreased according to increasing of seeding rate, so the amount of small tubers among total harvested tubers increased greatly at high seeding rate. Tuber size was affected by bulbil size. Seeding of the larger size bulbils result in increased sprouting rate, each tuber weight and tuber yield per unit area.
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) refers to seed germination during ripening, due to loss of dormancy before harvest. As PHS in rice causes decrease in grain yield and quality, tolerance to PHS is an important trait of Japonica cultivars in Korea. It is important to investigate the related genes and environmental factors, because PHS is a quantitative trait. In this study, we examined PHS rates at three different times according to the cumulative daily mean temperature after heading (CTAH) for 5 rice cultivars released in Korea for 5 years from 2013 to 2017 to determine the effect of environmental factors on PHS. ABA content in ripening spikelets was analyzed to understand how it was related to PHS tolerance. PHS rate increased as CTAH increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. PHS rate was significantly different (p < 0.001) among the cultivars, showing Dasanbyeo, Jounbyeo, and Nampyeongbyeo to be PHS-tolerant, and Jopyeongbyeo and Gopumbyeo to be susceptible at all the CTAH of 800, 1000, and $1200^{\circ}C$. In 2015 and 2016, PHS rates were relatively higher, because of high temperature and frequent rainfall during the ripening period. In each cultivar, ABA content decreased as CTAH increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. However, there was no significant correlation between ABA content and PHS tolerance among the cultivars.
"Hanbaek", a white winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar was developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA. It was derived from the cross "Shan7859/Keumkang"//"Guamuehill" during 1996. "Hanbaek" was evaluated as "Iksan314" in Advanced Yield Trial Test in 2005. It was tested in the regional yield trial between 2006 and 2008. "Hanbaek" is an awned, semi-dwarf and hard winter wheat, similar to "Keumkang" (check cultivar). The heading and maturing date of "Hanbaek" were similar to that of "Keumkang". Culm and spike length of "Hanbaek" were 89 cm and 9.0 cm, which longer culm length and spike length than "Keumkang" (80 cm and 7.9 cm, respectively). "Hanbaek" had lower test weight (797 g) and higher 1,000-grain weight (47.7 g) than "Keumkang" (813 g and 44.9 g, respectively). "Hanbaek" showed resistance to winter hardiness and susceptible to pre-harvest sprouting, which lower withering rate on the high ridge (4.4%) and higher rate of pre-harvest sprouting (47.9%) than "Keumkang" (21.9% and 30.4%, respectively). "Hanbaek" had similar flour yield (74.4%) to "Keumkang" (74.1%) and higher ash content (0.45%) than "Keumkang" (0.42%). "Hanbaek" showed lower lightness (89.13) and similar redness and yellowness (-0.87 and 10.93) in flour color than "Keumkang" (90.02, -1.23 and 9.28, respectively). It showed similar protein content (12.8%) SDS-sedimentation volume (63.0 ml) and gluten content (10.8%) to those of "Keumkang" (11.9%, 62.3 ml and 10.2%, respectively). It showed lower water absorption (59.6%) and mixing time (3.8 min) in mixograph and higher fermentation volume (1,350 ml) than those of "Keumkang" (60.6%, 4.7 min and 1,290 ml, respectively). Amylose content and pasting properties of "Hanbaek " were similar to those of "Keumkang". "Hanbaek" showed same compositions in high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS, 2*, 13+16, 2+12), granule bound starch synthase (Wx-A1a, Wx-B1a, and Wx-D1a) and puroindolines (Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1b) compared to "Keumkang". "Hanbaek" showed lower hardness (4.22N) and similar springiness and cohesiveness of cooked noodles (0.94 and 0.63) to those of "Keumkang" (4.65N, 0.93 and 0.64, respectively). Average yield of "Hanbaek" in the regional adaptation yield trial was 5.98 MT/ha in upland and 5.05 MT/ha in paddy field, which was 8% and 6% higher than those of "Keumkang" (5.55 MT/ha and 4.77 MT/ha, respectively). "Hanbaek" would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum temperature of $-10^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.
