  • The temnoral variations of the suspended material concentration (SMC) during spring-neap tidal cycle was investigated at more than 30 stations in Deukryang Bay, Korea, in 1 and 23 July, 1992. The averaged total SMC in spring tide was two times more than those in neap tide. It can be explained that the strong tidal current in spring tide disturbed bottom waters and induced higher SMC in the bay. The areal distributions of SMC for the surface and the bottom layers in the bay shows much different patterns during spring and neap tidal cycle. We concluded that the vertical stratification intensity of water mass is important factor of the horizonatal distribution of SMC in the bay.

  • Environmental impact on a land reclamation project, Hwaong tidal barrier was studied using the dispersion and advection model to predict the influence of polluted water discharged from freshwater reservior. The simulation results show that the distribution of concentration by influence of polluted water discharged during a tidal cycle appeared to be extinguished at atmost all points after two tidal cycle. Peak concentration near the sluice gate is found out to be higher during the spring tide than neap tide. Equi-concentration contour line appeared to distributed a longer according to line of sea dike in spring tide than neap tide. The reasons is because influence by currents of northwest direction is a stronger, compared to spring tide and neap tide in the flood tide.

  • The temporal variations of the transparency with water temperature, salinity and density during spring-neap tidal cycle of spring, summer, autumn and winter time were investigated at 34 stations using observation data in Deukryang Bay, Korea, in 1995. It was found that the transparency was depended on spread of tidal currents and vertical stratification of water. The depth of transparency during neap tide was deeper than that of spring tide. The value of transparency in summer was the largest among four seasons. We concluded that the vertical stratification intensity of water mass and vertical distribution of transparency.

  • Using a sledge net, the benthic amphipods were taken over one cycle of the neap and spring tides in January 1993 at the sandy shore surf zone of Dolsando, southern Korea. From these samples, we investigated the diel and tidal effects on the intraspecific zonation of Pontogeneia rostrata. The density of p. rostrata was higher during neap tide than spring. Of three categories (adult males and females and juveniles), juveniles and males attained to its highest density during neap and spring tides, respectively. Length- frequency data show that the high mortality of juveniles seemed to occur in winter. In the surface at night, it is significant that juveniles were significantly more abundant during neap tide than spring, whereas both adult males and females were more abundant during spring tide than neap. This suggests that the vortical migration patterns of juveniles and adults vary with the type of tides. During flood of spring tide, more than $90\%$ of population collected at the area above the mean sea level (MSL) were adults. With a decrease of female/male ratio, size of males increased there but that of female did not change, indicating an active migration of large males. This behavior can provide an extension of distribution area far large males, and also give a competitive advantage to large male against small one for mate and feeding. Although adult p. rostrata was collected at 100 cm above MSL at night during spring tide, a major portion of population as usually present on the shore below MSL. The center of zonation was restricted from 50 cm to 250 cm below MSL.

  • Silty tidal rhythmites were found from the upper Pleistocene sequence unconformably overlain by the Holocene tidal deposits within the macrotidal coastal zone of Youngjong Island, western coast of Korea. The rhythmites occur as vertically accreted, parallel and planar laminae that are 0.1-2.5 mm in thickness. Each lamina grades from coarse silt (mean grain size: 5-6.5 ${\phi}$) at the lower part into fine silt to mud (mean grain size: 6-7.5 ${\phi}$) at the upper part. The rhythmites can be classified into two types based on the patterns in laminar thickness variation. Type I is a bundle of 12-20 laminae in which laminar thickness varies sinusoidally. Type ll is an alternation of thick and thin laminae as a couplet. Type I is inferred as a product of varying tidal energy during a semimonthly (neap-spring) tidal cycle, in which thicker laminae were deposited during spring tides and thinner laminae were formed during neap tides. Type ll is interpreted to have been formed by asymmetric semidiurnal tidal currents in association with diurnal inequality, whereby thick lamina of each couplet represents dominant tidal current and the thin lamina reflects subordinate tidal current.

  • Chinhae Bay, included small ports, is the region which the red tide phenomenon is occurred frequently in summer season. Field sampling of 4 cross-sections in the bay resulted in detailed informations on cross-sectional velocity distributions, salt concentrations and discharge during one consecutive tidal cycle in summer season, 1983. High velocity cores reoccur two times a semi-diurnal tidal cycle at the same cross-sectional location, lower layer, in Kadok Channel during the spring tide. The tidal exchange ratio was estimated by Eulerian method. The range of exchange ratios in central Kadok Channel are 9.3-17% at the spring tide and 16.9-21.8% at the neap tide. On the other hand, its range in Masan bay-mouth is 8.7% at the spring tide and 2.0% neap tide, respectively.

  • This study analyzed cross-sectional variations in residual current and strengths of stratification by observing cross-sectional velocity and salinity during spring tide and neap tide, respectively, for continuous 13-hour periods at 2 observation lines at northern and southern end of Seokmo Channel, which is located west of Ganghwado. Salinity distribution of channel depends on not only neap and spring tide but also impact of salinity. The residual current component was obtained by removing $M_2$ and $M_4$ tidal components that were extracted using the least squares method on 13-hour velocity component. Cross-section of residual velocity at northern and southern end of Seokmo Channel exhibited southward residual components at channel's surface layer, but northward residual current was observed at channel's bottom layer, clearly showing a 2-layer tidal circulation between surface and bottom layers. The variation in location of appearing northward residual current according to changes in spring and neap tidal cycle and its correlation with stratification were analyzed using the Richardson number and Simpsonhunter index. At northern and southern end of Seokmo Channel, northward residual current appears in the location where Richardson number is large, Simpson-hunter index appears as a value greater than 4.

  • We have monitored nutrients, chlorophyll, suspended solids, and salinity in the Keum Estuary to understand the temporal fluctuation of oceanographic parameters and to illustrate any variation due to the gate operation of the Keum River Dike from June, 1995 to September, 1996, approximately for 500 days. Tidal range is used as the key factor to explain the fluctuations and atmospheric parameters such as air temperature, wind velocity and rainfall are also used supplementally. The fresh water discharge was selected as another major impact on the estuarine environment due to the gate operation of the Keum Dike. In addition, daily variation by tidal cycle was investigated twice in April and July, 1996. In diurnal variation, salinity was positively correlated with tidal elevation, whereas negatively correlated with nutrients. Relatively high suspended solid and chlorophyll contents were found in the period between high and low tide. In 500 days continuous observations, salinity was negatively correlated with the volume of fresh-water discharge, but positively correlated with nutrients. A major chlorophyll bloom occurred in spring. A similar pattern of variation was observed between suspended solid and the neap-spring tidal cycle. In comparison with the data of the Keurn Estuary before the gate operation of the Keum River dike, fresh-water discharge predominated other environmental factors during the rainy season. In addition, the velocity of tidal current and the concentration of suspended solid were decreased, while nutrients and chlorophyll contents were increased.

  • Velocity variability of Masan Inlet in the northernpart of Chinhae Bay is studied on the basis of the cross-sectional net velocity distributions and its root-mean-square. They were calculated during three consecutive cycles at spring tide as well as two cycles at near tide with precipitations in June and July 1985. During the spring tide, net ebb flow take place in the western channel while net flood flow in the eastern channel of the cross-section. On the contrary, the direction of both net flows during the neap tide with precipitations is reversed. R.M.S. isotachs show that the highest velocity is 15 cm/sec at spring tide and 10.3 cm/sec at neap tide, and the greatest velocity is persistently found at the surface layer of the western channel of the cross-section at each tidal cycle. It is shown that the major part of constituents of the constant flow in the Inlet is the tidal residual current. The density-driven current, however, plays an important role afer the heavy precipitations.

  • The object of this study is to estimate the net volume transport and the residual flow that changed by space and time at southern part of Yeomha channel, Gyeonggi Bay. The cross-section observation was conducted at the mid-part (Line2) and the southern end (Line1) of Yeomha channel for 13 hours during neap and spring-tides, respectively. The Lagrange flux is calculated as the sum of Eulerian flux and Stokes drift, and the residual flow is calculated by using least square method. It is necessary to unify the spatial area of the observed cross-section and average time during the tidal cycle. In order to unify the cross-sectional area containing such a large vertical tidal variation, it was necessary to convert into sigma coordinate system by horizontally and vertically for every hour. The converted sigma coordinate system is estimated to be 3~5% error when compared with the z-level coordinate system which shows that there is no problem for analyzing the data. As a result, the cross-sectional residual flow shows a southward flow pattern in both spring and neap tides at Line2, and also have characteristic of the spatial residual flow fluctuation: it northwards in the main line direction and southwards at the end of both side of the waterway. It was confirmed that the residual flow characteristics at Line2 were changed by the net pressure due to the sea level difference. The analysis of the net volume transport showed that it tends to southwards at $576m^3s^{-1}$, $67m^3s^{-1}$ in each spring tide and neap tide at Line2. On the other hand, in the control Line1, it has tendency to northwards at $359m^3s^{-1}$ and $248m^3s^{-1}$. Based on the difference between the two observation lines, it is estimated that net volume transport will be out flow about $935m^3s^{-1}$ at spring tide stage and about $315m^3s^{-1}$ at neap tide stage as the intertidal zone between Yeongjong Island and Ganghwa Island. In other words, the difference of pressure gradient and Stokes drift during spring and neap tide is main causes of variation for residual current and net volume transport.
