A linkage mechanism is a device to convert an input motion into a desired output motion. Traditional linkage mechanism designs are based on trial and error approaches so that size or shape changes of an original mechanism often result in improper results. In order to resolve these problems, an improved automatic mechanism synthesis method that determines the linkage type and dimensions by using an optimization method during the synthesis process has been proposed. For the synthesis, a planar linkage is modeled as a set of rigid blocks connected by zero-length translational springs with variable stiffness. In this study, the sizes of rigid blocks were also treated as design variables for more general linkage synthesis. The values of spring stiffness and the size of rigid block yielding a desired output motion at the end-effecter are found by using an optimization method.

This study is concerned with computerized multi-level substructuring methods and stress analysis of coil springs. The purpose of substructuring methods is to reduce computing time and capacity of computer memory by multiple level reduction of the degrees of freedom in large size problems that are modeled by three dimensional continuum finite elements. In this paper, the spring super element developed is investigated with tension, torsion, and bending of a cylindrical bar in order to verify its accuracy and efficiency for the multi-level substructuring method. And then the algorithm is applied to finite element analysis of coil springs. The result demonstrates the validity of the multi-level substructuring method and the efficiency in computing time and memory by providing good computational results in coil spring analysis.

This paper develops the flexible computational model of a heavy truck by interfacing the frame modeled as a flexible body to the heavy truck's computational model composed of rigid bodies. The frame is modeled by the finite element method. Three torsional modes and three bending modes of the frame are considered for the interface of the heavy truck's computational model. The actual vehicle test is conducted off road with a velocity of 20km/h. The vertical accelerations at the cab and front axle are measured in the test. For the verification of the developed computational model, the measured vertical acceleration profiles are compared with the simulation results of the heavy truck's flexible computational model. E grade irregular road profile of ISO is used as an excitation input in the simulation. The verified flexible computational model is used to compare the vibration characteristics of a front suspension system having a multi-leaf spring and that having a tapered leaf spring. The comparison results show that the front suspension having a tapered leaf spring has a higher vertical acceleration at the front axle but a lower vertical acceleration at the cab than the suspension system having a multi-leaf spring.

The spacer grid set is a part of a nuclear fuel assembly. The set has a spring and the spring supports the fuel rods safely. Although material nonlinearity is involved in the deformation of the spring, nonlinearity has not been considered in design of the spring. Recently a nonlinear response structural optimization method has been developed using equivalent loads. It is called nonlinear response optimization equivalent loads (NROEL). In NROEL, the external loads are transformed to the equivalent loads (EL) for linear static analysis and linear response optimization is carried out based on the EL in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. EL is the load set which generates the same response field of linear analysis as that of nonlinear analysis. Shape optimization of the spring is carried out based on EL. The objective function is defined by minimizing the maximum stress in the spring while mass is limited and the support force of the spring is larger than a certain value. The results are verified by nonlinear response analysis. ABAQUS is used for nonlinear response analysis and GENESIS is employed for linear response optimization.
The general screen used to separate the particle size of recycled aggregate has restrictions when dealing with moisturized materials because of the blockage phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, to improve the separation efficiency of the conventional screen, the excellence of additional vibrating device based on spring was decided by a simulation experiment based on the discrete element method (DEM). The motion characteristic was investigated by analyzing the displacement, amplitude, and strain angle based on the spring design. Further, the particle motion was simulated by applying spring motion. The material flow and separation efficiency of the screen applied spring were confirmed as 9.2 kg/s and 97 %, respectively. Consequently, the improvement in the screen applied with blockage prevention spring was confirmed by comparing with the conventional screen.

Springs are widely utilized in machine element. To find out stiffness of frustum-shaped coil spring, the space beam theory using the finite element method is adopted in this paper. In three dimensional space, a space frame element is a straight bar of uniform cross section which is capable of resisting axial forces, bending moments about two principal axes in the plane of its cross section and twisting moment about its centroidal axis. The corresponding displacement degrees of freedom are twelve. To find out load vector of coil spring subjected to distributed compression. principle of virtual work is adapted. And this theory was programming using MATLAB software. To compare FEM using MATLAB software was applied MSC. Nastran software. The geometry model for MSC. Patran was produced by 3-D design modeling software. Finite element model was produced by MSC. Patran. Finite element was applied tetra (CTETRA) having 10 node. The analysis results of the MATLAB and MSC. Nastran are fairly well agreed with those of various experiments. Using MATLAB program proposed in this paper and MSC. Nastran, spring constants and stresses can be predicted by input of few factors.

The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics for the partially fluid-filled continuous cylindrical shells with the intermediate supports. The intermediate supports are simulated by two types of artificial springs : the translational spring for the translation for each direction and the rotational spring for a rotation. The springs are continuously distributed along the circumferential direction. By allowing the spring stiffness to become very high compared to the stiffness of the structure, the rigid intermediate supports are approximated. In the theoretical procedure, the Love's thin shell theory is adopted to formulate the theoretical model. The frequency equation of the continuous cylindrical shell is derived by the Rayleigh-Ritz approach based on the energy method. Comparison and convergence studies are carried out to verify and establish the appropriate number of series term and the artificial spring stiffness to produce results with an acceptable order of accuracy. The effect of intermediate supports, their positions and fluid level on the natural frequencies and mode shapes are studied.
The purpose of this paper is to utilize the numerical assembly method (NAM) to determine the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of a multi-step beam carrying multiple rigid bars, with each of the rigid bars possessing its own mass and rotary inertia, fixed to the beam at one point and supported by a translational spring and/or a rotational spring at another point. Where the fixed point of each rigid bar with the beam does not coincide with the center of gravity the rigid bar or the supporting point of the springs. The effects of the distance between the "fixed point" of each rigid bar and its center of gravity (i.e., eccentricity), and the distance between the "fixed point" and each linear spring (i.e., offset) are studied. For a beam carrying multiple various concentrated elements, the magnitude of each lumped mass and stiffness of each linear spring are the well-known key parameters affecting the free vibration characteristics of the (loaded) beam in the existing literature, however, the numerical results of this paper reveal that the eccentricity of each rigid bar and the offset of each linear spring are also the predominant parameters.

This paper investigates the free vibration analysis of double-beam system coupled by a two-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system. In order to generalize the model, the main beams are assumed to be elastically restrained against translation and rotation at one end and free at the other. Furthermore, the mass-spring system is elastically connected to the beams at adjustable positions by means of four translational and rotational springs. The governing differential equations of the beams and the mass-spring system are derived and analytically solved by using the Fourier transform method. Moreover, as a second way, a finite element solution is derived. The frequency parameters and mode shapes of some diverse cases are obtained using both methods. Comparison of obtained results by two methods shows the accuracy of both solutions. The influence of system parameters on the free vibration response of the studied mechanical system is examined.
