  • The objectives of this study were to prepare PLGA film onto the surface of the capsular tension ring (CTR) for controlled drug release and investigate the influence of plasticizers, the test drug and measurement conditions on flexibility of the film. Film solutions were prepared by dissolving PLGA, plasticizer (triethyl citrate, TEC or polyethylene glycol, PEG), test drug (dexamethasone) in ethyl acetate then films were prepared by spray coating and evaporation method. Then, the flexibility of PLGA film was determined by elongation test. The addition of plasticizer, PEG or TEC to PLGA copolymer caused a depression of glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and the elasticity of PLGA films increased. The addition of dexamethasone to the PLGA/TEC matrix decreased the flexibility of film. Dimensional factors of the PLGA films such as width and thickness were significantly influenced on flexibility of films and film length and elongation speed had no considerable influence on elongation of films. In this study, sufficiently flexible and stable PLGA films capable of being coated onto CTR could be prepared. This PLGA films can be used as a platform for local drug delivery.

  • In this paper, we compared the electric field and absorptance of nano particles in nanostructures by amplifying the electric field around the nanoparticles through plasmon resonance and comparing the structure that can increase the absorptance with the nanostructure by using the Finite Different Time Domain (FDTD) simulation. In addition, the width of the nanostructure was adjusted to 240 nm ~ 300 nm, and the light absorptance rate was higher as the gap between the particles was short. In addition, a study was conducted on the formation of nanoparticles and nanostructures on the surface through UV imprint. In order to form particles in the structure, the nano particles were first arranged in the mold used for the fabrication of the structure using spray coating, and then fabricated through UV imprinting. The nanostructure and particles were formed together by scanning electron microscopy.

  • Under the long-term effect of corrosive environment, many cold-formed steel (CFS) structures have serious corrosion problems. Corrosion leads to the change of surface morphology and the loss of section thickness, which results in the change of instability mode and failure mechanism of CFS structure. This paper mainly investigates the elastic local buckling behavior of corroded CFS columns. The surface morphology scanning test was carried out for eight CFS columns accelerated corrosion by the outdoor periodic spray test. The thin shell finite element (FE) eigen-buckling analysis was also carried out to reveal the influence of corrosion surface characteristics, corrosion depth, corrosion location and corrosion area on the elastic local buckling behaviour of the plates with four simply supported edges. The accuracy of the proposed formulas for calculating the elastic local buckling stress of the corroded plates and columns was assessed through extensive parameter studies. The results indicated that for the plates considering corrosion surface characteristics, the maximum deformation area of local buckling was located at the plates with the minimum average section area. For the plates with localized corrosion, the main buckling shape of the plates changed from one half-wave to two half-wave with the increase in corrosion area length. The elastic local buckling stress decreased gradually with the increase in corrosion area width and length. In addition, the elastic local buckling stress decreased slowly when corrosion area thickness was relatively large, and then tends to accelerate with the reduction in corrosion area thickness. The distance from the corrosion area to the transverse and longitudinal centerline of the plate had little effect on the elastic local buckling stress. Finally, the calculation formula of the elastic local buckling stress of the corroded plates and CFS columns was proposed.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of CaCl2 foliar spraying on the inhibition of blossom-end rot (BER) in hot summer paprika (Capsicum annum L. 'Special') cultivation. The effect of CaCl2 application was examined by the foliar application based on different fruit size, frequency, and spraying time. Also, it was investigated the occurrence and alleviation effect of BER symptom. Foliar application of CaCl2 (Ca 0.4%) was conducted by treating a fruit and leaf at 4 to 9 nodes above the crown flowers of each plant with 350 mL per week from June 3 to July 1. When the CaCl2 was sprayed at 7-day intervals for 4 weeks, the Ca content was the lowest in the fruit harvested with BER symptom in 11 to 20 mm of fruit width (FW). Four different regions in both BER symptom and normal fruits showed significant differences of Ca content, the highest was in pedicel, followed by stem-end, middle, and blossom-end. The Ca content increased sharply in normal paprika with 31-40 mm FW, in which Ca content was 78% higher than that of BER. Ca content in the middle and blossom-end of paprika over 21 mm in FW ranged 19.8% to 28.8% in normal fruits and 15.7% to 18.5% in BER, respectively. The incidence of BER increased rapidly by more than 60% in fruits with 31-40 mm FW. While there was no difference in fruit weight among the FW treatment, marketable yield rate was highest in the 21-30 mm FW, and the sugar content was high in the 11-30mm FW. When CaCl2 was applied three times for 7 days to a paprika having a 21- 30 mm FW, the cell wall-bound (CWB) Ca content was the highest and the rate of BER was lowest with 6.3%. After 10 days of CaCl2 foliar spray treatment, the CWB Ca content of paprika increased by 2.9 to 3.5 times compared to the control in all treatments. At 7 days after the CaCl2 foliar spraying once a day at varying spraying time, the leaf burn observed from 9:30 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. and the proline content increased as the spraying time was delayed. Therefore, the CaCl2 foliar spraying method for reducing of BER occurrence during paprika summer cultivation seems to be appropriate to spray 2-3 times at intervals of 3 days and before 8 a.m. at the time when the FW is 21-30 mm.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate which hydroponic system is the optimum for growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Angelica gigas during experiment. Angelica gigas 'Manchu' were sowed and managed under a growth room chamber. The environmental conditions (temperature $22^{\circ}C/18^{\circ}C$ (day/night), relative humidity 50-70%, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) $120{\pm}6{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) were maintained for 3 weeks. Forty eight seedlings with 4-5 leaves were transplanted in deep flow technique (DFT), substrate, and spray culture systems [culture bed: 800 (L) ${\times}$ 800 (W) ${\times}$ 400 mm(H)] under $150{\pm}5{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ PPFD provided with fluorescence lamps and cultivated for 11 weeks. At the end of the experiment, fresh and dry weights, leaf lenghth and width, SPAD, root fresh, and dry weights, and root volume of Anglica gigas were measured. Photosynthetic rate of Anglica gigas were measured with portable photosynthesis systems to investigate optimum PPFD, $CO_2$ concentration, and air temperature conditions. Fresh and dry weights of Anglica gigas grown in substrate were significantly greater than DFT-treated, but there were not significant with spray treatment. Leaf photosynthesis of Anglica gigas showed the tendency to sharply increase as PPFD was increased from 50 to $200{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$. Though $CO_2$ saturation point was around $1000-1200{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$, increase in air temperature from 16 to $26^{\circ}C$ did not quite affect photosynthesis of Anglica gigas. In conclusion, Anglica gigas may be optimally cultivated with a spray culture system as air temperature, PPFD, and $CO_2$ concentration for environment are controlled at $20{\pm}3^{\circ}C$, $150{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, and around $1000{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$ for mass production.

  • In order to setting the control standard of Chinese cabbage pests using a drone, the downward wind speed, spraying width, and the number of falling particles and particle size were examined using a water sensitive paper with spray different heights (3, 4, 5 m) and flying speeds (3, 4 m/sec). Fore kinds of pesticides for aviation control were used to test the perfect lethal concentration and dose for major pests of Chinese cabbage such as Plutella xylostella, Spodoptera exigua and Spodoptera litura. The number of falling particles in spraying pesticides with drones was 80.5% on the upper side, 14.8% on the vertical side, and 4.7% on the back side. The number of falling particles as different spray heights were 3 m = 53, 4 m = 40 and $5m=39particles\;cm^{-2}$. The number of falling particles as different flying speeds were $3m\;sec^{-1}=62$ and $4m\;sec^{-1}=25particles\;cm^{-2}$. In the laboratory test, the perfect lethal concentration and dose of Plutella xylostella was chlorfenapyr SC (20 times, $0.5{\mu}l$) and bistrifluron chlorfenapyr SC (25 times, $0.5{\mu}l$). The perfect lethal concentration and dose of Spodoptera exigua was chlorfenapyr SC (20 times, $1{\mu}l$), bistrifluron chlorfenapyr SC (20 times, $1{\mu}l$), and chlorfenapyr SC (20 times, $1{\mu}l$) and bistrifluron chlorfenapyr SC (20 times, $0.5{\mu}l$) for Spodoptera litura. Therefore, the main pest control method of Chinese cabbage using drones is 20 times diluted chlorphenapyr SC or bistrifluoruron-chlorphenapyr SC, sprayed at 3 m height by $3msec^{-1}$ of going speed. This spraying method will be effective for control of Chinese cabbage pest.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of age of transplants, propagated by cutting, of two cut rose (Rosa hybrida Hort.) cultivars on their subsequent growth and yield in an effort to develop an efficient cutting propagation method for domestic rose cultivars. Two cultivars used in this study were a standard type 'Pink Aurora' and a spray type 'Yellow King'. Cuttings were prepared as single node cuttings each with a five-leaflet leaf and were stuck in rockwool cubes ($5cm{\times}5cm{\times}5cm$, UR, Korea) at two different dates. Cuttings rooted for either 30 (stuck on Jan. 20, 2009) or 48 days (stuck on Jan. 2, 2009) were transplanted into a rockwool slabs ($10cm{\times}15cm{\times}100cm$, UR, Korea) on the same date, 18 Feb. 2009. Plant growth and cut flower quality were investigated for two successive harvests during the period of Jan. to July in 2009. In both cultivars, 48 days old plants showed some growth of the shoot and root before transplanting. However, in the case of 30 days old plants before transplanting no noticeable growth of the shoot and root was obserable in 'Pink Aurora', while only shoot growth, but not root growth to the bottom of the rooting medium, was observed in 'Yellow King'. This suggested cultivar-specific responses that in this experiment a spray type 'Yellow King' showed greater growth rate during the rooting stage than a standard type 'Pink Aurora'. In the measurement of growth and cut flower yield after transplanting, the 48 days old standard type 'Pink Aurora' produced greater number of cut flowers per plant than 30 days old plants, whereas their mean stem fresh weight was recorded smaller than that of the 30 days old plants. For 'Yellow King', 30 days old plants showed greater stem length, flower width, number of five-leaflet leaves per stem, stem fresh weight, and number of cut flowers per plant than 48 days old plants. Therefore, growth and yield were significantly affected by cultivar and age of the rooted cutting, and additional research is needed on the effect of age of rooted cuttings in more cultivars.

  • Weeds may compete detrimentally with the ginseng for moisture and nutrients but hand weeding is the only practical means of eliminating weeds after crop establishment. To define the effects of 2, 4-D herbicide application on the plant growth and root yield of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). the herbicide 2, 4-D was applied as a foliar spray with the rates of 0.5. 1.0. 1.5 and 2.0 times of the recommended herbicide dosage 70ml/l0a. The Korean ginseng treated with 2, 4-D in the rate of two times concentration was indistinguishable from nontreated plants in visual rating for foliar symptoms. There were no significant differences of the leaf length and width as well as the stem length and diameter in check plants and those recieving 2, 4-D treatments. The. berry maturing in 3 and 4-years old ginseng was not inhibited with 2, 4-D treatment. The root weight of the 4-years old ginseng plant was not reduced by 2, 4-D application of 2 times dosage. However. when the ginseng seedling was treated with 2, 4-D. detrimental phenomena as stem bending and dicoloration of marginal part of seedling leaf were occured but stem bending was recovered in a few days.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of change in heat release rate on unsteady fire characteristics of under-ventilated fire in a semi-closed compartment. A standard doorway width of the full-scale ISO 9705 room was modified to 0.1 m and the flow rate of heptane fuel was increased linearly with time using a spray nozzle located at the center of enclosure. Temperature, heat flux, species concentrations and heat release rate were continuously measured and then global equivalence ratio (GER) concept was adopted to represent the unsteady thermal and chemical characteristics inside the compartment. It was observed that there was a significant difference in unsteady behavior between global and local combustion efficiency, and the GERs predicted by ideal and measured heat release rate were also shown different results in time. The unsteady behaviors of temperature, heat flux and species concentrations were represented well using the GER concept. It was important to note that CO concentration was gradually decreased with the increase in GER after reaching its maximum value in the range of 2.0~3.0 of global equivalence ratio. In addition, the experimental data on unsteady thermal and chemical behaviors obtained in a semi-closed compartment will be usefully used to validate a realistic fire simulation.

  • The aim of this study was to prevent the decrease in crop output by disease and insect pests and excessive spraying of agricultural pesticides by application uniformity. A 3m height and 15km/h speed is difficult to maintain with an unmanned helicopter for aerial application, which has been affected by the controlling habits and methods or environmental factors, such as changes in the wind. Therefore, in this study, an aerial application system was design to be attached to an unmanned helicopter, which can allow a controlled application width and spray rate automatically and verified experimentally using Rmax of MS-AVIATION. The size of agricultural land was 50 m2 and nine water sensitive cards were arranged at 1.25m intervals in 5 rows with each row having a 10m interval from the position of 5m. The unmanned helicopter was flying at speeds ranging from 7.2km/h to 17.6km/h and heights ranging from 2.32m to 3.47m. The proposed aerial application system allowed application uniformity by making a valid spraying area of 7.5 m2 with 46423 particles distributed on average.
