In supersonic propulsion system, the inlet buzz phenomenon in the subcritical operation arises large pressure oscillation, combustion instability, and thrust loss, etc. Inlet Buzz phenomenon and the spray injection/combustion are figured out by the unified unsteady numerical analysis. TAB(Taylor Analogy Breakup) model was applied. Acoustic mode of the entire engine was investigated by detail analysis of pressure fluctuation at each location of the engine.
In the direct injected gasoline engine, atomized spray is desired to achieve efficient mixture formation needed to good engine performance because the injection process leaves little time for the evaporation of fuels. Therefore, substantial understanding of global spray structure and quantitative characteristics of spray are decisive technology to optimize combustion system of a GDI engine. The combustion and emission characteristics of gasoline-fueled stratified-charge compression ignition(SCCI) engine according to intake temperature and compression ratio was examined. The fuel was injected directly to the cylinder under the high temperature condition resulting from heating the intake port. With this injection strategy, the SCCI combustion region was expanded dramatically without any increase in NOx emissions, which were seen in the case of compression stroke injection. Injection timing during the intake temperature was found to be an important parameter that affects the SCCI region width. The mixture stratification and the fuel reformation can be utilized to reduce the required intake temperature for suitable SCCI combustion under each set of engine speed and compression ratio conditions.
Biodiesel fuel has different spray patterns, because viscosity and surface tension of biodiesel fuel are higher than that of diesel fuel. The diesel combustion is strongly controlled by the fuel spray behavior in combustion chamber. So, it was needed to understand the spay characteristics of non-esterification biodiesel fuel. In this study, the spray characteristics of non-esterification biodiesel fuel was investigated to confirm of an effect of WDP. The characteristics of fuel atomization was analyzed with SMD and span factor through laser diffraction particle analyzer (LDPA), and the process of spray injection was visualized through the visualization system composed of a halogen lamp and high speed camera. It was found that injection delay time and SMD of blended fuel with WDP get shoter and smaller than that of non-esterification biodiesel fuel.

An experimental investigation was undertaken in a diesel spray to evaluate wall impingement behavior and droplet size distribution. Emphasis is placed on the possibility of the application for new combustion type which is based on OSKA-D type. Visualization were employed using optical scheme which was a spark shadowgraphy to observe the behavior of wall impingement caused by diesel spray vertically injected at the center of the combustion chamber. Droplet size measurements using Malvern system were made to quantify the visual observations with surface diameter of impingement. The effects of the surface dia. variation on the droplet size during injection with the wall impingement spray are discussed. It was found that for the wall impingement spray the droplet size becomes greatly small rather than the spray without the wall impingement and the droplet deposition rate of the injection fuel is decreased as the surface area of impingement becomes small.
Laser induced-exciplex-fluorescence (EXCIPLEX) proposed by Melton is used to visualize fuel vapor in spray combustion. However, in the EXCIPLEX method based on TMPD/naphthalene system, the TMPD : naphthalene ratio is strictly restricted to 1 : 9. In addition, fluorescence intensity due to the vapor phase is extremely weak. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose a new laser-induced-excimer fluorescence (EXCIMER) method to visualize the liquid and vapor phases simultaneously. The spatial distributions of liquid and vapor in fuel spray suspended by ultrasonic waves are compared using the EXCIPLEX and EXCIMER methods. The correlation between fuel vapor concentration and fluorescence intensity is experimentally investigated by measuring the fluorescence intensity of saturated vapor formed over liquid fuel at a controlled temperature. These experimental results indicate that the EXCIMER method is effective for evaluating fuel vapor visualization in spray combustion. Furthermore, the quantitative distribution of fuel vapor concentration can be correctly estimated by the EXCIMER method.
The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in the high-pressure engine conditions. The high-pressure vaporization model is developed to realistically simulate the spray dynamics and vaporization characteristics in high-pressure and high-temperature environment. The interaction between chemistry and turbulence is treated by employing the Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) Model. The detailed chemistry of 114 elementary steps and 44 chemical species is adopted for the n-heptane/air reaction. In order to account for the spatial inhomogeneity of the scalar dissipation rate, the multiple RIFs are introduced. Numerical results indicate that the RIF approach together with the high-pressure vaporization model successfully predicts the ignition delay time and location as well as the essential features of a spray ignition and combustion processes.

Spray characteristics of diesel fuel injection is one of the most important factors in diesel combustion and pollutant emissions especially in HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engines where the interval between the onset of combustion and the evaporation of atomized fuel is relatively short, An investigation into various spray characteristics from different holes of VCO(Valve Covered Orifice) nozzles was performed and its results were compared to standard sac nozzle. The global characteristics of spray, including spray angle, spray tip penetration, and spray pattern were measured from the spray images which were frozen by an instantaneous photography with a spark light source. For better understanding of spray behavior, SMD of the fuel sprays from multi hole nozzles were measured with back light imaging while the sprays from the other holes are covered by a purpose-built nozzle cap. The investigation manifestly reveals the different spray patterns at the beginning of injection produced by VCO nozzles can be identified as three distinct types with their own macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, while macroscopic non-uniformity disappears at 0.9∼1.0ms from the start of injection.
Pre-combustion chamber type indirect diesel engines have different combustion characteristics compared with those of common rail direct injection engine. The CONVERGE, specific engine CFD program, was used to simulate hollow cone spray model and combustion. The air-fuel mixture flow propagating from pre-combustion chamber to cylinder was concentrated at top half and center of the pre-combustion chamber throat. Stronger mixture flow was formed at smaller and longer throat cases. As a result, thermal efficiency and fuel consumption were improved for modified throat shape and the soot emission was also reduced.
GTL (Gas To Liquid) has the potential to be used in diesel engines as a clean alternative fuel due to advantages in emission reduction, particularly soot reduction. Since the physical properties of GTL fuel differ from those of diesel fuel to some extent, studying how this difference in characteristics of GTL and diesel fuels affects spray and combustion in diesel engines is important. In this study, visual investigation of sprays and flames from GTL and diesel fuels in a vessel simulating diesel combustion was implemented. The effects of various parameters and conditions, such as injection pressure, chamber temperature and pilot injection on liquid-phase fuel length and auto-ignition delay were investigated. It was determined that GTL has a somewhat shorter liquid-phase fuel length, which explains why there is less contact between the fuel liquid-phase and flame for GTL fuel compared to diesel fuel.
This study focused on the use of orimulsion in industrial combustion systems. Orimulsion is a bitumen-in-water emulsified fuel, which contains a thirty percent water. Orimulsion has relatively high levels of sulfur and nitrogen compared to many fuel oils, and has been the subject of much debate regarding the environmental impacts of its use. The goal of this research is to analyse the effect of flash spray combustion characteristics of orimulsion on NOx and particulate material reduction. For the flash spray of orimulsion, it is heated by $150^{\circ}C$. The effects of fuel heating temperatures on NOx and particulate material emissions were investigated experimentally. As the fuel temperature was increased, NOx and particulate material concentrations in flue gas were decreased.
