  • The values of brightness temperature difference (BTD) between 11um and 12um infrared channels may reflect amounts of low-level water vapor and cloud types due to the different absorptivity for water vapor between two channels. A simple method of classifying cloud types at night was proposed. Two-dimensional histograms of brightness temperature of the 11um channel and the BTD between the split window data over subareas around characteristic clouds such as Cb(cumulonimbus), Ci(cirrus), and Sc(stratocumulus) was constructed. Cb, Ci and Sc can be classified by seleting appropriate thresholds in the two-dimensional histograms. And we can see amounts of low-level water vapor in clear area as well as cloud types in cloudy area in the BTD image. The map of cloud types and low-level water vapor generated by this method was compared with 850hPa and 1000hPa relative humidity(%) of numerical analysis data and nephanalysis chart. The comparisons showed reasonable agreement.

  • Purpose - This study examines the information effect and trading behavior of investors for the 430 stock split data from January 2004 to June 2018 in the Korean stock market. Design/methodology/approach - The stock split samples are classified into two groups by split ratio as well as three groups by price level prior to split. We also investigate the trading behavior of investors categorized by institutional versus individual investors. Findings - First, we find a significantly positive information effect on the announcement day. In particular, the information effect is more distinct in the group of larger split ratio and higher price level of stocks. Second, we find a huge increase in turnover following the stock splits, which mainly results from the trading by individual investors. Also, the increase in turnover by individual investors is evident in the group of larger split ratio and higher price level of stocks. Third, the stock splits have a negative impact on the long-term stock performance. The negative buy-and-hold abnormal return(BHAR) makes no difference in the groups by split ratio as well as price level of stocks. Lastly, we find individual investors tend to buy splitted stocks, which exhibit the long-term under-performance. Research implications or Originality - The results in this paper suggest that the liquidity hypothesis is not supported in the Korean stock splits. In addition, we observe that individual investors are exposed to losses due to their unfavorable trading behavior following the stock split.

  • What motivates split-ticket voting in mixed electoral systems, where voters choose one party in district races and another party on the party list ballot? While much of the literature assumes strategic intent, three aspects commonly are overlooked: the competitiveness of district races, the presence of a district candidate from one's preferred party, and whether voters know the electoral threshold for party list seats. Furthermore, few studies disaggregate types of split-ticket voting (e.g. not voting for one's preferred party in a district vs. party list). Taiwan provides an intriguing case study for analysis, not only as a relatively new adopter of a mixed system, but also the presence of additional conditions that would encourage at least the consideration of a split ticket. Using survey data from the Taiwan's Election and Democratization Studies (TEDS) after the Taiwan's 2016 Legislative Yuan election, this analysis finds that knowing the threshold, the winner's margin, and the placement of a district candidate from one's preferred party all influence split-ticket voting among those with a partisan preference. However, closer inspection identifies a distinction between defecting from the district versus the party list. Evidence shows that district competitiveness and candidate placement influences defection from the district candidate, while the electoral threshold influences defection from the party list. The results add to our understanding of strategic and non-strategic incentives in mixed systems.

  • There were two purposes of this study. The first was to research the effects of standard and fixed-split keyboards on wrist posture and movements during word processing. The second was to select optimal computer input devices in order to prevent cummulative trauma disorder in the wrist region. The group of subjects consisted of thirteen healthy men and women who all agreed to participate in this study. Kinematic data was measured from both wrist flexion and extension, and wrist radial and ulnar deviation during a 20 minute period of word processing work. The measuring tool was an electrical goniometer, and was produced by Biometrics Cooperation. The results were as follows: 1. The wrist flexion and extension at resting starting position were not significantly different (p>.05), however the angle of radial and ulnar deviation were significantly different in standard and split keyboard use during word processing (p<.05). 2. In the initial 10 minutes, the dynamic angle of wrist flexion and extension were not significantly different (p>.05), however the dynamic angle of radial and ulnar deviation was significantly different in standard and split keyboard use during word processing (p<.05). These results suggest that the split keyboard is more optimal than the standard keyboard, because it prevented excessive ulnar deviation during word processing.

  • Tree model is the most popular classification algorithm in data mining due to easy interpretation of the result. In CART(Breiman et al., 1984) and C4.5(Quinlan, 1993) which are representative of tree algorithms, the split fur classification proceeds to attain the homogeneous terminal nodes with respect to the composition of levels in target variable. But, fur instance, in the chum prediction modeling fur CRM(Customer Relationship management), the rate of churn is generally very low although we are interested in mining the churners. Thus it is difficult to get accurate prediction modes using tree model based on the traditional split rule, such as mini or deviance. Buja and Lee(1999) introduced a new split rule, one-sided purity for classifying minor interesting group. In this paper, we compared one-sided purity with traditional split rule, deviance analyzing churning vs. non-churning data of ISP company. Also reviewing the result of tree model based on one-sided purity with some simulated data, we discussed problems and researchable topics.

  • Rock mass characterization is an integral part of rock engineering design. Much of the information for rock mass characterization comes from field fracture mapping and data collecting. This paper describes two technologies that can be used to assist with the field mapping and data collecting activities associated with rock mass characterization: digital image processing and 3D laserscanning. The basis for these techniques is described, as well as the results of field case studies and an analysis of the error in estimating fracture orientation.

  • From the perspectives of grammaticalization and corpus, the purpose of this study is to examine the motivation of the emergence of the split infinitives in American English and to discuss the justification of the split infinitives based on the corpus empirical data such as COHA and COCA. The formerly ungrammatical split infinitives in the form of [to + adverb + verb] are now definitely grammatical forms in Present Day English (PDE). The corpus-based data confirms the legitimacy of the split infinitives with the empirical reasons like clarifying sentences (i.e., disambiguation) or strongly focused readings. In addition, the split infinitives are natural consequences caused by the grammaticalization of an infinitival particle to and most crucially by the loss of verb movement. When verb movement to T position does not occur in infinitival clauses, the word order results in [to + AdvP + V], thus forming the split infinitives. The split infinitives are no longer a matter of discussion and will continue to increase in both formal and informal contexts as being definitely grammatical forms.

  • The premise of the intentional model of split-ticket voting is that some voters split their tickets simply because they prefer divided government and believe in constant "checks and balances." This article examines whether this premise stands firm in an emerging democracy like Taiwan. That is, by using survey data in Taiwan, we explore whether one's attitude toward divided or unified government is "real." We hypothesize that a citizen's attitude toward "checks and balances" is subject to change, and conditional on whether her preferred party is in power. Specifically, we speculate that a citizen would tend to hold the balancing perspective or favor divided government, if her preferred party is in opposition. However, if her preferred party becomes the ruling party, she would be more likely to oppose (hold) the balancing (non-balancing) perspective or favor unified government. We then utilize panel survey data embedded in Taiwan's Election and Democratization Studies (TEDS) to verify our hypothesis.

  • Traditional centralized radio access network architecture used for 4G is based on Option 8, a functional split between PHY and RF. This option is commonly used with a fronthaul interface based on common public radio interface (CPRI) specifications; however, the increased data rates in 5G make this option impractical because of the fronthaul interface's high bandwidth requirement. Since CPRI specifications have many vendor-specific options, achieving multi-vendor interoperability becomes challenging. Open RAN (O-RAN) Alliance is developing novel open fronthaul interface specifications based on the functional split Option 7-2x, one of the intra-PHY split options, to relax the bandwidth requirement of the fronthaul interface and achieve multi-vendor interoperability. This article provides a brief overview of the various functional split options for 5G fronthaul that have been reported so far and existing fronthaul technologies. Further, the technological trends in the 5G open fronthaul interface is discussed, focusing on the O-RAN Alliance specifications under standardization.

  • Freon CHF experiments are carried out to investigate the CHF enhancements by mixing vane shapes of spacer grids in nuclear fuel assembly. The experiments were performed for a wide range mass flux, 50$\sim}$3000 kg/$m^2s$. Three kinds of spacer grids in 5${\times}$5 rod bundles are tested: no mixing vane grids, hybrid mixing vane grids, and split mixing vane grids. The CHF performances are compared along with the data belong to the PWR operating conditions based on a water equivalence through a fluid-to-fluid modeling method. The average of the data in this range is 16.4% for 37 data of hybrid vane grid and 12.5% for 24 data of split vane. In the lower mass flux, however, the split vane grid shows slightly higher performance than the hybrid vane grid.
