  • In this study temperature distribution and gas flow inside a planetary type reactor in which a number of satellites on a spinning susceptor were rotating were analyzed using numerical simulation. Effects of flow rates on gas flow and temperature distribution were investigated in order to obtain design parameters. The commercial computational fluid dynamics software CFD-ACE+ was used in this study. The multiple-frame-of-reference was used to solve continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations which governed the transport phenomena inside the reactor. Kinetic theory was used to describe the physical properties of gas mixture. Effects of the rotation speed of the satellites was clearly seen when the inlet flow rate was small. Thickness of the boundary layer affected by the satellites rotation became very thin as the flow rate increased. The temperature field was little affected by the incoming flow rate of precursors.

  • Optical observations of Geostationary and Molynia orbit spin-stabilized satellites over the Korean peninsula have been carried out at the Kyung Hee University Observatory with a 30 inch telescope. We have observed 5 spin-stabilized satellites, and obtained 0spin periods, which can be used for deducing a design for each bus model. Verifications of spin periods of 3 known satellites from manufacturer, and observations of 2 unknown satellites were made. The difference between known spin periods and observed spin periods is 0.06sec on the average and the difference of those spin rates is 3.3rpm on the average. Those results indicate that spin periods and spin rates of observed geostationary spin-stabilized satellites are within operating limits. Spin rates of unknown satellites, Fengyun 2B and Molynia 1-87 are 89.3rpm, 78.4rpm earh. It is suggested that the research of spin stabilized satellites can be used for the determinations of standard light sources for short period celestial objects and helpful for the constructions of satellite databases with photometric and/or spectroscopic satellite observations.

  • The motions of a spinning rotor and a fluid enclosed in its cavity are known to have mutual interactions, which change the frequencies of forced vibrations and cause instabilities. These phenomena are of technical importance for fluid-cooled turbines as well as spin-stabilized satellites or rockets containing liquid fuels. In this paper the characteristics of unstable whirling of a rotor containing a partitioned cavity filled with two kinds of liquids are investigated experimentally. It studies the influence of rotational speed and filling ratio of two kinds of liquids on unstable whiring. As a result, it is found that the whirl velocity is approximately equal to, or slightly lower for large masses of trapped fluid than rotor critical speed. In case of a spinning rotor partially filled with two kinds of liquids the boundary surface plays a similar role to the free surface, and cases unstable forward whirl.

  • In the three-axis control of satellites by using on-board actuators, gyros are usually used to measure the attitude angles and angular rates. The gyros are operated by electronic parts and mechanical actuators. The digital components of the electronic parts consist of largely FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) as one of the methods for VLSI(Very Large Scale Integrated) circuit design, while the mechanical parts provide output signal directly by mechanical actuation of a spinning rotor. In this research, a mixed mode of gyro is implemented in FGA. In addition to the hardware implementation, the simulation study was conducted by using the SABER for the mixed mode simulator. Results for the practical implementation of the satellite ACS (Attitude Control System) interfaced with the data processing are also presented to validate the FPGA implementation.
