Studies of interictal epileptiform discharges are essential for improving the diagnosis, classification, and management of epilepsy. In this case series we sought to identify the clinical and neurophysiological significance of bifid spikes, whose pattern bears a strong resemblance to the cardiac M pattern. We hypothesize that, analogous to the cardiac M pattern, the cerebral M pattern is generated by a conduction defect associated with asynchronous spatiotemporal averaging of electrical signals in the cortex, resulting in the signals reaching the scalp with different latencies. Unlike the cardiac M pattern, the pathology underlying the cerebral M pattern is unknown, although congenital CNS anomalies may be a culprit.

When the induction motor is operated by CSI, the commutation capacitance in the CSI circuit is increased according to the increase of large capacitor system. The output voltage spikes are generated at the moment of charge and discharge of the commutation capacitor. Also, since output current comprise a great number of harmonics, torque ripples of the motor are generated, having bad effects on the motor. In this study, by adopting the 18-phase multiple high Frequency Current Source Inverter (HFCSI), torque ripples generated by the voltage spikes are mostly eliminated except the 17th and 19th harmonics. To reduce the voltage spikes comprised in the output voltage, particularly, the methods of eliminating the cause of bad effect upon the motor are proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, by using additional voltage Clamping Curcuit (VCC), it is possible to select the values of commutation capacitor energy loss in commutating, the commutating capacitor, and the capacitor in the clamping circuit.

This paper presents the way of building an occupancy grid map which a mobile robot needs to autonomously navigate in the unknown environment. A disparity map resulting from stereo matching can be converted into the 2D distance information. If the stereo matching has some errors, however, the subsequent map becomes unreliable. In this paper, a new morphological filter is proposed to reject 'spikes' of the disparity map due to stereo mismatch by considering the fact that these spikes occur locally. The new method has advantages that it is simpler and more easily realized than existing similar algorithms.

This paper discusses the spike response model of neurons. First, this paper discusses the coding of spikes, the function of spikes, and the construction of the spikes of neurons by the superposition of simple kernel functions. This paper discusses the method of kernel superposition is general than the response of the IF (Integrate-and-Fire) neuron model, too. Next, this paper discusses the coincidence detection and the input weight computation of spiking neurons and the activity of neuron populations in some detail.
The clinical state with EEG pattern similar to interval discharge of epileptics is named as latent epilepsy, which does not necessarily mean that the patient will develop epilepsy later. However, since there is possibility of developing epilepsy on later date, antiepileptic mainly dilantin was tried to control the abnormal EEG. Since January to October 1985, total 580 headache sases with more than moderately abnormal EEG Visited the Neurology clinic. Among them 162 cases with interval seizure pattern (ISP) of epilepsy were selected for the study. The main ISP was 1. diffuse theta and/or delta bursts and 2. spikes. Since the study is only analysis of clinical treatment of 162 cases Without previous planning based on financial aid, about 30% of the patients did not return after the 1st EEG examination, in 42% failed to follow the EEG after the treatment and only remaining 28% of the cases were studied. Among 29 patients who were treated with Dilantin 100mg tid po, 16 improved and 13 not. Of the 13, 4 showed partial Improvement and partial progression. Case 1. In 4 weeks of antiepileptic the ray (AR), spikes disappeared but in 2 months developed bursts. Case 2. In 17days of AR, spikes and bursts disappeared but in 3 months bursts reccured. Case 3. In 1 week of AR, bursts disappeared but spikes developed. Case 4. In 3 months of AR, no change of spikes and bursts and she discontinued the AR. In 6 months she developed grandmal seizure. Eighteen cases, treated with other drugs except antiepileptics, all showed improvement. The other drugs were vincaprol, polygammalon, aronamin, ATP and hydergine. The improved cases had spikes more often than theta bursts. In view of the small number of the cases due to dropping most patients out of present study, it is considered meaningless to perform statistical analysis. Further well planned study With more patients is to be expected.
Electrical stimulation through retinal prosthesis elicits both short and long-latency retinal ganglion cell (RGC) spikes. Because the short-latency RGC spike is usually obscured by electrical stimulus artifact, it is very important to isolate spike from stimulus artifact. Previously, we showed that topographic prominence (TP) discriminator based algorithm is valid and useful for artifact subtraction. In this study, we compared the performance of forward backward (FB) filter only vs. TP-adopted FB filter for artifact subtraction. From the extracted retinae of rd1 mice, we recorded RGC spikes with $8{\times}8$ multielectrode array (MEA). The recorded signals were classified into four groups by distances between the stimulation and recording electrodes on MEA (200-400, 400-600, 600-800, $800-1000{\mu}m$). Fifty cathodic phase-$1^{st}$ biphasic current pulses (duration $500{\mu}s$, intensity 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, $60{\mu}A$) were applied at every 1 sec. We compared false positive error and false negative error in FB filter and TP-adopted FB filter. By implementing TP-adopted FB filter, short-latency spike can be detected better regarding sensitivity and specificity for detecting spikes regardless of the strength of stimulus and the distance between stimulus and recording electrodes.
Previously, we reported that besides retinal ganglion cell (RGC) spike, there is ~10 Hz oscillatory rhythmic activity in local field potential (LFP) in retinal degeneration model, rd1 mice. The more recently identified rd10 mice have a later onset and slower rate of photoreceptor degeneration than the rd1 mice, providing more therapeutic potential. In this study, before adapting rd10 mice as a new animal model for our electrical stimulation study, we investigated electrical characteristics of rd10 mice. From the raw waveform of recording using $8{\times}8$ microelectrode array (MEA) from in vitro-whole mount retina, RGC spikes and LFP were isolated by using different filter setting. Fourier transform was performed for detection of frequency of bursting RGC spikes and oscillatory field potential (OFP). In rd1 mice, ~10 Hz rhythmic burst of spontaneous RGC spikes is always phase-locked with the OFP and this phase-locking property is preserved regardless of postnatal ages. However, in rd10 mice, there is a strong phase-locking tendency between the spectral peak of bursting RGC spikes (~5 Hz) and the first peak of OFP (~5 Hz) across different age groups. But this phase-locking property is not robust as in rd1 retina, but maintains for a few seconds. Since rd1 and rd10 retina show phase-locking property at different frequency (~10 Hz vs. ~5 Hz), we expect different response patterns to electrical stimulus between rd1 and rd10 retina. Therefore, to extract optimal stimulation parameters in rd10 retina, first we might define selection criteria for responding rd10 ganglion cells to electrical stimulus.

This study investigated the aspects of damage due to low temperature treatment in order to establish the damage criterion according to low temperature invasion during regeneration period in wheat after regeneration period in the early spring. We cultivated wheat cultivar 'Geumgang' in Wagner pots and treated them with three types of low temperature, and the gradual temperature change program was set in a low temperature incubator for 12.5 h per day for 5 days during the night time when the length of young spikes was about 1 mm. All treatments except for the control were treated in 5 steps for each temperature. Treatment 1 was treated at the lowest temperature $-5^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, treatment 2 for 7 h at $-5^{\circ}C$, and treatment 3 for 9 h at $-5^{\circ}C$. The most common type of damage was partial infertility, and there were some discolored spikes. The damage rate of wheat spikes treated at $-5^{\circ}C$ for 9 h was the highest, while the damage rates of wheat sprouts treated at 5h and 7h were not different from each other. It was found that the damage of wheat spikes exposed to low temperatures for a long time was large. It is necessary to investigate the aspects of spike damage by duration days of low temperature.

Spike detection in long-term EEG monitoring forepilepsy by wavelet transform(WT), artificial neural network(ANN) and the expert system is presented. First, a small set of wavelet coefficients is used to represent the characteristics of a singlechannel epileptic spikes and normal activities. In this stage, two parameters are also extracted from the relation between EEG activities before the spike event and EEG activities with the spike. then, three-layer feed-forward network employing the error back propagation algorithm is trained and tested using parameters obtained from the first stage. Spikes are identified in individual EEG channels by 16 identical neural networks. Finally, 16-channel expert system based on the context information of adjacent channels is introducedto yield more reliable results and reject artifacts. In this study, epileptic spikes and normal activities are selected from 32 patient's EEG in consensus among experts. The result showed that the WT reduced data input size and the preprocessed ANN had more accuracy than that of ANN with the same input size of raw data. Ina clinical test, our expert rule system was capable of rejecting artifacts commonly found in EEG recodings.
