  • It is very important to obtain gray and ductile cast irons with completely pearlitic structure by addition more economical alloying elements. In this study, 9 melts of gray iron and 5 melts of Mg-treated ductile cast iron were made according to Sb content (0-0.08% Sb). Each melt were casted to ${\phi}20mm$ test bars in sand mold under the same condition and inspected microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. The results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. It is confirmed that Sb should be an economical, simple and useful additive for avoiding ferrite in gray and even in ductile cast irons. 2. For gray cast iron, the recommended ladle addition of metallic Sb amounts to 0.05%. At these levels, Sb has no detrimental influence on the mechanical properties of gray cast irons, which are normally modified according to their pearlite content without increasing the chilling tendency. 3. Despite its adverse influence on graphite shape in ductile iron, Sb can be used as a pearlite stabilizing alloying element even in the case of Mg - treated iron. The quantity to be added does not exceed 0.04% in the case of thinwalled castings. 4. The nodule count is increased very much and the shape of graphite particles become remarkably spheroidal. The matrix may be fully pearlitized, except for thin - walled castings, because the high nodule count results inevitably in some ferrite. 5. The $Ac_1$ and pearlite decomposition temperature are rised in accordance with increasing of additive Sb amount.

  • Drilling tests were carried out austempered ductile castiron(ADI) to clarify the factors influencing the drilling characteristics of ADI material. The machinability of material was evaluated using high speed steel drill and cobalt contained drill of 6mm diameter. The spheroidal graphite cast iron materials were austenized at 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and then wear was kept at 375$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Austempered ductile cast iron contains a great deal of retaine austenite which contributes to an improvement of impact strength, In this paper, machinability of ADI was investigated by drilling experimentation. The results obtained are as follows: a)Flank wear increases logarithmically with the increases of cutting time. b) Relation of flank wear and cutting force can be appiled to $F_z$ = 925VB + 820 for the cutting suggested condition. c) Drilling hole number of about 2 times can be reduced more step feed than ordinary feed due to the high hardness of ADI material and hardness increasing ascribed to the martensite of retained austenite.

  • This paper was carried out to know the influence of advanced austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) on the tool life and mechanical properties of drilling machinability. For manufactured method of ADI, the spheroidal graphite cast iron were austenized at 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and then austempered for 2 hour at 37$0^{\circ}C$ in the salt bath. And interrelationship has been investigated between tool life and mechanical characteristics of specimen material on drilling condition when the ordinary and step-feed drilling are carried out to drill holes of specimens. Tensile strength and hardness of ADI decrease and elongation of ADI increases with the increase austempered temperature. It is known that about 2 times of tool life in the case of step-feed decreases compared with ordinary feed due to the high hardness of ADI and hardness ascribed to the fact that retained austenite became to martensite state due to cutting heat in drilling. Under the constant feed rate 0.1mm/rev relation between hardness and length of end tip after drilling can be formularized to Hv=$788.46L^{-0.096}$ for the cutting speed 6.1m/min.

  • This paper considers a new routing problem, successive max-min connection ratio problem (SMCRP), arised in circuit telecommunication networks such as SONET and WDM optical transport network. An optimization model for SMCRP is established based on link-flow formulation. It's first optimization process is an integral version of maximum concurrent flow problem. Integer condition does not give the same connection-ratio of each node-pair at an optimal solution any more. It is also an integral multi-commodity flow problem with fairness restriction. In order to guarantee fairness to every node-pair the minimum of connection ratios to demand is maximized. NP- hardness of SMCRP is proved and a heuristic algorithm with polynomial-time bound is developed for the problem. Augmenting path and rerouting flow are used for the algorithm. The heuristic algorithm is implemented and tested for networks of different sizes. The results are compared with those given by GAMS/OSL, a popular commercial solver for integer programming problem.n among ferrite-pearlite matrix, the increase in spheroidal ratio with increasing fatigue limitation, 90% had the highest, 14.3% increasing more then 70%, distribution range of fatigue.ife was small in same stress level. (2) $\sqrt{area}_{max}$ of graphite can be used to predict fatigue limit of Ductile Cast Iron. The Statistical distribution of extreme values of $\sqrt{area}_{max}$ may be used as a guideline for the control of inclusion size in the steelmaking.

  • Ductile cast iron has good ductility and toughness, for the graphite morphology is spheroidal. It has been reported that the strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron was resulted from the modification of matrix structure by the heat treatment or the addition of alloying elements. In this study, effects of various special heat treatments (cyclic heat treatment and intermediate heat treatment) and Ni addition on the toughness and strength of the austempered ductile cast iron were studied. The results obtained from this study were as follows : 1. The amount of fine pearlite was increased with the Ni content and the number of cycle in cyclic heat treatment. 2. When the specimens treated and not by special heat treatment at 820 was austempered, in the former the austenite was formed on grain boundary entirely, but in the latter on grain boundary partially. 3. The impact energy was decreased with the Ni content, because the coarisen austenite pools formed with the Ni content was transformed into martensite during quenching. 4. The mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron containing 2%Ni treated cyclic heat treatment(5 cycles)was very excellent in handness 99(HRB), impact energy 12(kg-m) maximum fracture load 1500(kg-f).

  • This paper deals with a stability evaluation of a butterfly valve using the body and disc of a valve seat. The experimental results of a strength evaluation are shown using STS316 stainless steel and spheroidal graphite cast iron (GCD450). The disc material was made from GCD450. The results of the strength analysis are as follows: Ultimate tensile strength 485MPa, Yield strength 370 MPa, Young's modulus $1.1{\times}10^5$, and Poisson's ratio v = 0.28. For the results of the disc analysis, the safety factor was about 4. This shows that a design was derived that satisfied the requirements of structural safety. However, some problems, such as the deflection and deformation of the disc, may occur when the sea water has back flow with a high pressure.

  • The static and fatigue tests have been carried out to verify the validity of a generalized residual strength degradation model. And a new method of parameter determination in the model is verified experimentally to account for the effect of tension-compression fatigue loading of spheroidal graphite cast iron. It is shown that the correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical prediction on the statistical distribution of fatigue life by using the proposed method is very reasonable. Furthermore, it is found that the correlation between the theoretical prediction and the experimental results of fatigue life in case of tension-tension fatigue data in composite material appears to be reasonable. Therefore, the proposed method is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter than maximum likelihood method and minimization technique.

  • Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. Also, it has been reported that, additional strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron can be obtainded from the proper combination of matrix structures by the heat treatment and addition of alloying elements. In this study the effect of special heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Ni, Mo) on the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures, strength and toughness of ductile cast iron were studied systematically. In water quenching from $770^{\circ}C$, the martensite volume(%) increased, but the ferrite volume(%) decreased with increment of Ni content. In as cast, pearlite volume(%) and hardness increased with increment of Mo and Ni contents. And with the increment of the destabilization austempering holding time, the bainite volume(%) increased but the martensite volume(%) decreased. As destabilization austempering holding time is same, bainite volume(%) decreased, martensite increased with the increment of Ni and Mo contents. The hardness and tensile strength decreased, but impact energy increased with the decrease of Ni and Mo contents, and increment of holding time of destabilization austempering treatment.

  • The growth characteristics of bainite at early stage in the fast quenched spheroidal graphite cast irons containing 0.06%Mn and 0.45%Mn during austempering process, was investigated with optical and scanning electron microscope. The following results regarding the effects of Mn and isothermal heat treatment on the morphological variation of bainitic ferrite were obtained. The morphology of bainite varies from acicular below 350$^{\circ}C$ to feather shape above 350$^{\circ}C$. The period of isothermal treatment also affects the shape of bainite at the fixed temperature. At 350$^{\circ}C$, bainite is bamboo leaf-like up to 200 secs of isothermal holding time and with further increasing time up to 300 secs, changes to a mixed structure consisting of both feather and bamboo leaf and, finally becomes all feather shape at 900 secs. The morphology of bainitic ferrite formed at early stage of 300$^{\circ}C$ isothermal treatment is similar to that of bainitic ferrite formed at 250$^{\circ}C$ or 350$^{\circ}C$ with unbranched, linear ferrite. However, bainitic ferrite divides into branches with increasing isothermal treatment, which occurs more fast at 400$^{\circ}C$ than at 350$^{\circ}C$. The difference in adding amount of Mn influences the morphology of bainitic ferrite in upper bainite. The bainitic ferrite with 0.45%Mn is observed to be more stable than that with 0.06%Mn, remaining unbranched for a longer period at the same temperature.

  • In this study, the effect of Mo addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ductile cast iron have been investigated. The amounts of Mo and the thickness of specimen have been varied from 0 to 4.79wt% and 13mm, 10mm and 6mm, respectively. As the casting thickness decreases, the average size of spheroidal graphite is decreased and the hardness increases. By increasing the Mo content, the tensile strength of ferrite and pearlite matrix increases and shows maximum which is about $30{\sim}40%$ higher than ordinary ductile cast iron. After the maximum, adding more Mo results in gradual transformation of ferrite and pearlite to bainite and thus tensile strength decreases again. The elongation decreases continueously with Mo content. The addition of Mo about $0.5{\sim}1.0wt%$ improves the wear resistance and tensile strength of thin ductile cast iron.
