  • Nickel powders synthesized by the reduction of hydrazine of nickel salts fiom diethanolamine(DEA) solution, and investigated the morphological characteristics of nickel powders with the addition of hydrazine, reaction temperature, the composition of mixed solvents. The addition of hydrazine in DEA solution largely affected on size control of nickel powders. Under $N_2H_4/Ni^{2+}$ molar ratio= 1.5 and 2.0 conditions, spherical nickel powders in the submicron range obtained, owing to higher the reduction rate. An increase of temperature increased the size of nickel particles. At $220^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, the nickel powders composed of polyhedral particles with high crystalline in the submicron range. The mixed volume ratio of TEA to DEA affected on the increase of particle size and the inhibition of agglomerate between particles.

  • In this paper, we have prepared phase-pure $SrTiO_3:\;Pr^{3+}$ phosphor powder by Supercritical Fluid Mixing using $Sr(OH)_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ and $TiO_2$ powders as starting materials. Its luminescent properties were investigated in comparison with $SrTiO_3:\;Pr^{3+}$ powders prepared by solid-state method with conventional mixing. $SrTiO_3:\;Pr^{3+}$ phosphor powders by Supercritical Fluid Mixing have spherical shapes and narrow particle size distribution. We have investigated the luminescent properties of $SrTiO_3:\;Pr^{3+}$ phosphor using $Al^{3+}$ and $Ga^{3+}$ as sensitizer.

  • Space radiation environment for COMS is simulated by NASA AP8/AE8, JPL91 and NRL CREME models, respectively for trapped particle, solar proton and cosmic-ray. The radiation effects on electronic devices in communication payload are also estimated by using simulation results. Dose-depth curve and LET spectrum are calculated for estimating total ionizing dose(TID) effect and single event effect(SEE) respectively. Spherical sector method is applied to dose estimation at each position in the units of communication payload to consider shielding effect of platform and housing. Total ionizing dose at each position varies by 8 times through shielding effect under the same external space radiation environment.

  • Spatial variability of sand, silt, and clay contents on Hwadong SiCL and Jungdong SL was studied by using geostatistical concept. The measurements were made within a $33{\times}14m^2$ area at the nodes of 2 by 2m grids. The validity of all assumptions (stationarity, variogram models, etc.) was proved by Jack-knifing procedure and frequency distribution performed on the original data grids. The variogram of sand content on Hwadong SiCL was different from the linear model and that of clay content of Jungdong SL the linear and the spherical model in calculation of both kriged values and kriged variances in identification of its choice for simplicity.

  • The purpose of this work was the producing of a biodegradable poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) microcapsule and the analyzing of form and features for the manufacturing conditions which could be observed in a prospective drug delivery systems (DDS) through drug release. The effects of different stirring rates, stirring times and concentrations of emulsifier for the diameter and form of the microcapsules were observed using image analyzer (IA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result, the microcapsules were made in wrinkle and spherical forms with a mean particle size of 40~300$\pm$20 $mu extrm{m}$. PCL microcapsules containing drugs were confirmed using FT-IR spectra. The role of interfacial adhesion between PCL and drug was determined by contact angle measurements. The drug release test of PCL microcapsules was characterized by UV/vis. spectra. It was found that the drug release rate of the microcapsules prepared with high concentration emulsifier was significantly fast.

  • Microencapsulations of amoxicillin and cephalexin, using Eudragit RS, RL, E, S and L were investigated. The microcapsules were prepared by the solvent evaporation process in liquid paraffin phase, which is based on dispersion of acetone/isopropanol containing the drug in liquid paraffin. Aluminium tristearate was used as an additive for the preparation of microcapsules. The size distribution, dissolution test and observation by SEM were examined. Good reproducibility in microcapsule preparation was observed. The microcapsules obtained were spherical and free-flowing particles. The dissolution rates of amoxicillin and cephalexin from the microcapsules were considerably decreased as compared with those from amoxicillin and cephalexin powder, respectively. As the dispersing agents (aluminium tristearate) increased, the particle size of microcapsules decreased and the dissolution rate increased. In order to control the release rate of drugs, microcapsules were prepared by mixing Eudragit RS/RL or Eudragit S/L. As Eudragit RL ratio in microcapsule of Eudragit RS/RL increased, the dissolution rate increased. As Eudragit L ratio in microcapsule of Eudragit S/L increased, the dissolution rate increased. Furthermore, the release rates of drugs from Eudragit RS/L or RS/polyelthylene glycol 1540 (PEG 1540) were examined. The dissolution rate of drugs increased with increasing of Eudragit L or PEG 1540 ratio. In conclusion, the release rates of drugs from Eudragit RS/RL or RS/PEG 1540 microcapsule could be controlled, and these microcapsules will be convenient for reducing frequency of administration.

  • An explosion modeling technique was developed by using the spherical discrete element code, $PFC^{3D}$, which can be used to model the dynamic stress wave propagation phenomenon. The modeling technique is simply based on an idea that the explosion pressure should be applied to a $PFC^{3D}$ particle assembly not in the form of an external force (body force), but in the form of a contact force (surface force). The stress wave propagation modeling was conducted by simulating the experimental approach based on the Hopkinson's effect combined with the spatting phenomenon that had previously been developed to determine the dynamic tensile strength of Inada granite. As a result, the stress wave velocity obtained by the proposed modeling technique was 4167 m/s, which is merely $3\%$ lower than the actual wave velocity of 4300 m/s for an Inada granite.

  • High-transmittance film was coated by using spherical silica nano colloids. Silica colloid sol was preservred between two inclined slide glasses by capillary force, and particles were stacked to form a film onto the substrate as the upper glass was sliding. As the sliding speed increased, the thickness of the film decreased and light transmittance varied. The microstructure observed by SEM showed that silica particles were nearly close packed, which enabled the calculation of the effective refractive index of the film. The film thickness calculated from the wavelength of maximum transmittance and the effective refractive index was well coincided with the thickness observed by SEM and measured by profiler. The maximum transmittance of $94.7\%$ was obtained. This means that $97.4\%$ of transmittance or $1.3\%$ of reflectance can be achieved by simple process if both sides of the substrate are coated.

  • An experimental study has been done to investigate the explosion characteristics of aluminum powders with different sizes and concentrations in a 20 L spherical explosion vessel. Two different sizes of aluminum powder were used : $15.1{\mu}m$ and $34.8{\mu}m$ with a volume mean diameter. The results revealed that $15.1{\mu}m$ Al powder has a Lower explosion limit (LEL) of $40g/m^3$, a maximun explosion pressure ($P_{max}$) of 9.8 bar and a maximum rate of pressure rise ($[dP/dt]_{max}$) of 1852 bar/s, in $34.8{\mu}m$ Al powder, LEL of $70g/m^3$, $P_{max}$ of 7.9 bar and $[dP/dt]_{max}$ of 322 bar/s. The LEL of Al powders tended to increase with the increase of particle size. Also, it was found that the flame velocity calculated from the powder with $15.1{\mu}m$ was about 5 times higher than that of the powder of $34.8{\mu}m$.

  • Toxoplasma gondii infections occur throughout the world, and efforts are needed to develop various vaccine candidates expressing recombinant protein antigens. In this study, influenza matrix protein (M1) virus-like particles (VLPs) consisting of T. gondii rhoptry antigen 4 (ROP4 protein) were generated using baculovirus (rBV) expression system. Recombinant ROP4 protein with influenza M1 were cloned and expressed in rBV. SF9 insect cells were coinfected with recombinant rBVs expressing T. gondii ROP4 and influenza M1. As the results, influenza M1 VLPs showed spherical shapes, and T. gondii ROP4 protein exhibited as spikes on VLP surface under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The M1 VLPs resemble virions in morphology and size. We found that M1 VLPs reacted with antibody from T. gondii-infected mice by western blot and ELISA. This study demonstrated that T. gondii ROP4 protein can be expressed on the surface of influenza M1 VLPs and the M1 VLPs containing T. gondii ROP4 reacted with T. gondii-infected sera, indicating the possibility that M1 VLPs could be used as a coating antigen for diagnostic and/or vaccine candidate against T. gondii infection.
