  • Silica spheres were prepared by interfacial reaction method. Factors in-fluencing to the mean particle size and specific surface area of silica spheres were investigated. The experiment about the surface modification of silica spheres was carried out. It was observed that silica spheres have characteristics of the spherical shape with the vacancy in the inner side, high surface area, and reaction tendency by many silanol group. The mean particle size of silica spheres is dependent on the surfactant concentration and W/O ratio. The specific surface area is influenced by SiO2/Na2O mole ratio in sodium silicate. Silica spheres coated with titanium dioxide or zirconium dioxide improve the UV protection effect. Titanate and silane coupling agent make chemical bond with silica surface and improve the organophile and the dispersibility of silica spheres.

  • YAG(Y3Al5O12) as host material of YAG:Tb3+ was studied via hydrothermal synthesis of metal hydroxides. We changed the kind of mineralizer, the concentrations and process conditions in hydrothermal synthesis. As a result, we found, acicular YAG powders were obtained by the use of KOH as a mineralizer, the concentration of KOH affected the shape and size of YAG powder. Fine grained YAG were perpared by the use of NH4OH as a mineralizer and the concentration of NH4OH affected crystal phases but did not affect particle size. We could finally get the spherical looking YAG powder at 8 M NH4OH and at 35$0^{\circ}C$ for 12h. The average particle size was about 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • In this work, the silver nanoparticles have been synthesized by electrical explosion of wire in three liquid mediums: deionized water (DIW), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) solutions. Absorption in the UV-visible region of these suspensions was measured in the range of 300-800 nm. A surface plasmon peak was observed at ~400 nm in all suspensions in measured wavelength range. Particle size was analyzed by transmission electron microscope. It showed that the particles had nearly spherical shape in all samples. The average particle sizes prepared in DIW, PVP and SDBS solution were 37, 31 and 27 nm, respectively. Stability of the suspensions was estimated by multiple light scattering method. The presence of PVP and SDBS surfactants in the exploding medium resulted in enhanced stability of the silver suspensions.

  • Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method from aqueous silver nitrate solution and borohybride as a reduction agent. The morphology, particle size and shape were influenced by the reaction conditions such as the concentration of $AgNO_3$, a reduction agent and addition of surfactant. The particle size decreased with decreasing the concentration of silver nitrate and using a borohydride. The obtained Ag particles showed the spherical shape with the range of 10-20 nm.

  • Toner used in xerographic printing process is hydrophobic powder with low surface energy. The toner ink film fused on paper surface can be efficiently detached from a fiber surface during pulping, but it does not fragment again into fine toner particles. Ink agglomerates that result have too large particle size to be deinked by flotation. The purpose of this study is to enhance toner agglomeration using 1-octadecanol for improving the toner removal by screening. The effect of pH, pulping temperature, and 1-octadecanol on toner agglomeration and removal by screening was investigated using image analysis methods. Results showed that the size of toner agglomerates increased substantially when pulping was carried out at high temperature under acidic condition. When toner agglomerates showed spherical shape, the particle removal efficiency of screening was improved.

  • Nucleation is the most sensitive stage in the preparation of highly cross-linked, monodisperse microspheres by dispersion polymerization, since the addition of a small amount of cross-linker results in particle deformation and coagulation. To overcome these problems, $5\;{\mu}m$ poly(methyl methacrylate) seed particles prepared by dispersion polymerization were used in the preparation of mono disperse, cross-linked PMMA particles containing up to 7 wt% divinylbenzene by seeded batch dispersion polymerization. Spherical particles with a narrow size distribution containing up to 8 wt% of EGDMA were prepared by seeded multi-batch dispersion polymerization processes. These particles were identified by scanning electron microscopy and DSC.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer in a vertical type fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tube. Seven different solid particles having the same volume were circulated in the heat of exchanger. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries, materials, and corrugated tube geometries were investigated. The present work showed that the higher thermal capacities of materials and the geometries closer to the spherical one have higher heat transfer performances. In addition, heat transfer coefficients in the corrugated tubes were a little higher than those in the smooth tubes.

  • Microspheres were prepared by solvent-evaporation method with Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) as a starting material, and the effects of preparation variables on microsphere shape and average particle size were investigated. As the concentration of PVA solution increased from 1 to 5 wt%, the average particle size decreased from $370{\mu}m$ to $160{\mu}m$ and then increased to $240{\mu}m$ at 7 wt%. On the other hand, As the addition volume of PVA solution increased from 10 mL to 50 mL, the average particle size decreased from $370{\mu}m$ to $220{\mu}m$. Also, as the stirring speed increased from 500 rpm to 1,500 rpm, the average particle size decreased from $370{\mu}m$ to $110{\mu}m$. When dichloromethane and chloroform were used as organic solvents, respectively, the average particle size did not show any significant difference. However, when dichloromethane was used, voids were observed on the particle surface, but when chloroform was used, smooth spherical particles were obtained.

  • The synthesis of $Ni_5Si_2,\;Ni_2Si$ and NiSi has been investigated by mechanical alloying (MA) of Ni-27.9at%Si, Ni-33.3at%Si and Ni-50.0at%Si powder mixtures. As-received and premilled elemental powders were subjected to MA. The as-received Ni powder was spherical and the mean particle size 48.8$\mu$m, whereas the premilled Ni powder was flaky and the mean particle diameter and thickness were found to be 125 and 5$\mu$m, respectively. The mean surface area of the premilled Mi powder particle was 3.5 times as large as that of the as-received Ni powder particle. The as-received Si powder was was 10.0$\mu$m. Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction, followed by a slow reaction (a solid state diffusion), was observed to produce each Ni silicide during MA of the as-received elemental powders. In other word , the reactants and product coexisted for a long period of MA of time. Only SHS reaction was, however, observed to produce each Ni silicide during MA of the premilled elemental powders, indicating that each Ni sillicide formed rather abruptly at a short period of MA time. The mechanisms and reaction rates for the formation of the Ni silicides appeared to be influenced by the elemental powder particle size and shape as well as the heat of formation of the products $(Ni_5Si_2$longrightarrow-43.1kJ/mol.at., $Ni_2Si$$\rightarrow$-47.6kJ/mol.at.).

  • Spherical mesoporous silica particles, of which main pore diameter was 3.8 nm, were successfully prepared by spray pyrolysis from aqueous silicic acid. The effect of precursor concentration, reaction temperature, and the addition of urea and PEG on the particle diameter and pore properties such as pore diameter, total pore volume, and specific surface area were investigated by using FE-SEM, particle size analyzer, and nitrogen absorption-desorption analysis. With an increase of the precursor concentration from 0.2 M to 0.7 M, the average particle diameter, total pore volume, and specific surface area of the porous silica particles increased from 0.56 to $0.96\;{\mu}m$, 0.434 to $0.486\;cm^3/g$, 467.8 to $610.4\;m^2/g$, respectively. Within the temperature range $(600\;^{\circ}C{\sim}800\;^{\circ}C)$, there was no significant difference in the pore diameter, total pore volume, and specific surface area. In addition, the addition of urea as an expansion aid led to slight increases in particle diameter, pore diameter, and specific surface area. However, when the polyethylene glycol (PEG) as an organic template was used, the total pore volume of porous particles increased dramatically.
