Spray pyrolysis was applied to prepare spherical silica particles with mesopores of a regular structure. The physical properties such as surface area, pore size, pore structure, particle size, and morphology were studied by BET, SEM, SAXS, and DLS analysis. At a fixed gas flow rate, the BET surface area changed from 200 to $1,290m^2/g$ as changing the CTAB/TEOS molar ratio from 0.05 to 0.3. At a fixed CTAB/TEOS ratio, the surface area of silica particles was varied from 1,062 to $1,305m^2/g$ with changing the gas flow rate from 10 to 40 l/min. The average pore size measured by BJH desorption was about $21{\sim}23{\AA}$ and not significantly influenced by the CTAB/TEOS ratio and the gas flow rate. Finally, the highest surface area which was $1,305m^2/g$ were obtained when the CTAB/TEOS ratio and the gas flow rate were 0.2 and 20 l/min, respectively. According to SAXS analysis, the prepared silica particles showed a strong peak at $2{\theta}=2.6^{\circ}$ and two minor peaks around $2{\theta}=4.4^{\circ}$ and $5.1^{\circ}$, which are due to regular mesopores of hexagonal structure. The morphology of silica particles prepared were spherical shape and the average particle size was $1.0{\mu}m$.

Damage behaviors induced in silicon carbide by an impact of particle having different material and size were investigated. Especially, the influence of the impact velocity of particle on the cone crack shape developed was mainly discussed. The damage induced by spherical impact was different depending on the material and size of particles. Ring cracks on the surface of specimen were multiplied by increasing the impact velocity of particle. The steel particle impact produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In the case of high velocity impact of SiC particle, radial cracks were produced due to the inelastic deformation at the impact site. In the case of the larger particle impact, the damage morphology developed was similar to the case of smaller particle one, but a percussion cone was farmed from the back surface of specimen when the impact velocity exceeded a critical value. The zenithal angle of cone cracks developed into SiC material decreased monotonically with increasing of the particle impact velocity. The size and material of particle influenced more or less on the extent of cone crack shape. An empirical equation, $\theta$= $\theta$$\sub$st/, v$\sub$p/(90-$\theta$$\sub$st/)/500 R$\^$0.3/($\rho$$_1$/$\rho$$_2$)$\^$$\frac{1}{2}$/, was obtained as a function of impact velocity of the particle, based on the quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack. It is expected that the empirical equation will be helpful to the computational simulation of residual strength in ceramic components damaged by the particle impact.
The monodisperse spherical $SiO_2$ particles were overcoated with $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor layers via a Pechini sol-gel process and the resulting $SiO_2@Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ core-shell phosphors were subsequently annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ at an ambient atmosphere. The crystallographic structure, morphology, and luminescent property of core-shell structured $SiO_2@Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and photoluminescence (PL). The spherical, nonagglomerated $SiO_2$ particles prepared by a Stober method exhibited a relatively narrow size distribution in the range of 260-300 nm. The thickness of phosphor shell layer in the core-shell particles can be facilely controlled by varying the coating number of $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors. The core-shell structured $SiO_2@Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors showed a strong red emission, which was dominated by the $^5D_0-^7F_2$ transition (610 nm) of $Eu^{3+}$ ion under the ultraviolet excitation (263 nm). The PL emission properties of $SiO_2@Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors were also compared with pure $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphors.
Effects of the spherically shaped Ge and the rod-like carbon-coated Ge on the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ were investigated. Pure Ge and carbon-coated Ge nano-powders were synthesized under the different amount of $CH_4$ (0 to 5 kPa) by using DC thermal plasma method. When the $CH_4$ was added ~100 nm sized Ge with a spherical shape changed to rod-like morphology with a diameter of ~30-70 nm and a length of ~400-500 nm. Also it was confirmed that thin carbon layers of a few nanometers were formed along the rod length and the agglomerated carbons were found on the edges of rods. Pure spherical Ge and Ge/C rods were mixed and milled with Mg & B precursor to form the doped $MgB_2$ bulk samples by the solid-state reaction method. Almost no change of $T_c$ was noticed for the pure Ge-added $MgB_2$, whereas $T_c$ was found to decrease with the Ge/C-added $MgB_2$ samples. It was found that the pure spherical Ge showed to have a negative effect on the flux pinning of $MgB_2$. However, Ge/C rods can enhance the flux pinning property of $J_c$ due to the coated carbon on Ge rods.

The spherical $SiO_2$ powders were synthesized by the scaled-up ultrasonic pyrolysis (USP). The aqueous $SiO_2$ sol, which contained 20~30 nm $SiO_2$ particles, was used as a precursor for the scaled-up USP. The effects of the USP operating conditions and precursor conditions were systematically investigated, including reaction temperature, gas flow rate, and the concentration of $SiO_2$ sol on the morphologies of synthesized $SiO_2$ particles. the synthesized $SiO_2$ particle showed a pseudo-crystal phase, spherical morphology, and a smooth surface. The size of the spherical $SiO_2$ particle decreased as both reaction temperature increased and precursor concentration decreased. In addition, the synthesized $SiO_2$ particle size was increased by increasing the gas flow rate. Lastly, the scaled-up USP was compared with the lab-scale USP based on the same process conditions. Due to a short retention time in the reaction tube during the USP process, the $SiO_2$ particle synthesized via the lab-scale USP showed a larger particle size.
The morphology and photoluminescence characteristics of green light emitting hexaaluminate phosphor particles prepared by high temperature spray pyrolysis from spray solution with and without ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux were investigated. The particles prepared from spray solution without flux material had hollow morphology at preparation temperatures between $900^{\circ}C$ and $1,650^{\circ}C$. Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux added into spray solution enabled the formation of particles with spherical shape and filled morphology at preparation temperatures between $900^{\circ}C$ and $1,650^{\circ}C$. The hexaaluminate phosphor particles with magnetoplumbite structure were directly prepared by spray pyrolysis from spray solution with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux above $1,600^{\circ}C$. Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux was effective in improving the photoluminescence intensity of the phosphor particles at low preparation temperatures. The phosphor particles prepared from spray solution with and without flux material by spray pyrolysis under reducing atmosphere at $1,650^{\circ}C$ had comparable photoluminescence intensities with that of the phosphor particles optimized by post-treatment.

The synthesis of semiconductor nanoparticles is a growing research area due to the prospective applications for the development of novel technologies. In this paper we have reported the biosynthesis of Cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdSNPs) by reduction of cadmium sulphate solution, using the bacteria of Serratia nematodiphila. The process for the synthesis of CdS nanoparticles is fast, novel and ecofriently. Formation of the CdS nanoparticles was confirmed by surface Plasmon spectra using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and absorbance strong peak at 420 nm. The morphology of crystalline phase of nanoparticles was determined from Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The average size of CdS nanoparticles was in the range of 12 nm and the observed morphology was spherical. The results indicated that the proteins, which contain amine groups, played a reducing and controlling responsibility during the formation of CdS nanoparticles in the colloidal solution. Antibacterial activity against some bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella planticola. CdS nanoparticles exhibiting good bactericidal activity.
The aging characteristics of gas atomized Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy were investigated and compared to those of cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy. The gas atomized Mg-6 wt.% Al-1wt.% Zn alloy powders had spherical morphology between 1 and 100 $\mu m$ in diameter. After compaction under the pressure of 700 MPa at $320^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, the Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed a grain size of approximately 40 $\mu m$ which is smaller than that of the cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy, and a relative compact density of approximately 93%. After ageing, the Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed much faster peak hardness than cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy. The Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed the new fine precipitations with ageing time, while the cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy was almost similar morphology.
The pure Mg powder compacts were successfully fabricated using SPS process. The machined chip powder showed flake shaped morphology with coarse surfaces, while gas atomized powders were spherical in morphology with smooth surfaces. In this study, SPS process was used to consolidate the pure Mg powder because this process allows high density consolidation in a short time. The results showed that increased sintering temperature from $350^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$ with pressure of 30MPa, the maximum values of the density was increased from 98.1% to 99.8% of theoretical density, respectively. However, density of the sintered chip powders was higher than that of gas-atomized powder due to larger contact areas between particles.
Thick inorganic-organic hybrid films were prepared on ITO-coated glass substrates by the electrophoretic sol-gel deposition of polyphenylsilsesquioxane particles. The morphology of the deposited films changed from the aggregate of the spherical particles to monolith by heat treatment at temperatures higher than $200^{\circ}C$. Transparency of the films was significantly improved accompanied by the morphological change of the particles. The degree of the morphological change was governed by two factors; maximum heat treatment temperature and heating rate. Transparent thick films of ca. 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ in thickness were obtained only by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h with rapid heating from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$. These films obtained were strongly adhered to the ITO-coated glass substrates and has a very smooth surface.
