  • The microwave imaging technique which is mostly analyzed in the spectral domain has been exploited the image reconstruction of object using the 2-dimensional inverse Fourier transform so far. In this paper, a new method of microwave imaging corresponding to a coherent tomographic scheme in the space domain is presented for the conducting objects. Also, it is shown that image reconstruction for lines targets and conducting circular cylinder is per-formed by computer simulation using the filtered-backprojection which is the reconstruction algorithm widely used in X-ray CT. The proposed method analyzed in the space domain can reconstruct the image without any problems such as interpolation and image artifact which results from the reconstruction in the spectral domain for the symmetric conducting objects located in the origin. The image reconstructed by the filtered-backprojection in the space domain has given the superior quality compared with that produced by 2-dimensional IFFT using the interpolation scheme in the spectral domain. Finally, the image of line targets using the moment-method in the space domain which does not require the wide-band signal as the spectral domain has shown a possibility of super-resolution in the microwave imaging.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has developed a mobile satellite laser ranging (SLR) system called ARGO-M since 2008 for space geodesy research and precise orbit determination technologies using SLR with mm level accuracy. ARGO-M is capable of night tracking and daylight tracking for which requires spatial, spectral and time filters due to high background noises. In this study, characteristics and specifications of ARGO-M are discussed and its tracking capabilities of night and daylight tracking are analyzed for STSAT-2B and KOMPSAT-5 through link budget. Additionally false alarm and signal detection probabilities are also analyzed depending on spectral and time filters for daylight tracking for these satellites.

  • We present the development of a spectral dispersion device for wideband spectroscopy for which the primary scientific objective is the characterization of transiting exoplanets. The principle of the disperser is simple: a grating is fabricated on the surface of a prism. The direction of the spectral dispersion power of the prism is crossed with the grating. Thus, the prism separates the spectrum into individual orders while the grating produces a spectrum for each order. In this work, ZnS was selected as the material for the cross disperser, which was designed to cover the wavelength region, ${\lambda}=0.6-13{\mu}m$, with a spectral resolving power, $R{\geq}50$. A disperser was fabricated, and an evaluation of its surface was conducted. Two spectrometer designs, one adopting ZnS (${\lambda}=0.6-13{\mu}m$, $R{\geq}300$) and the other adopting CdZnTe (${\lambda}=1-23{\mu}m$, $R{\geq}250$), are presented. The spectrometers, each of which has no moving mechanical parts, consist simply of a disperser, a focusing mirror, and a detector.

  • This paper presents the Korean digit recognition method under noise environment using the spectral mapping training based on static supervised adaptation algorithm. In the presented recognition method, as a result of spectral mapping from one space of noisy speech spectrum to another space of speech spectrum without noise, spectral distortion of noisy speech is improved, and the recognition rate is higher than that of the conventional method using VQ (vector quatization) and DTW(dynamic time warping) without noise processing, and even when SNR level is 0dB, the recognition rate is 10 times of that using the conventional method. It has been confirmed that the spectral mapping training has an ability to improve the recognition performance for speech in noise environment.

  • Low resolution spectroscopic observations of leo-stationary satellites over the Korean peninsula have been carried out at the KyungHee Optical Satellite Observing Facility (KOSOF) with a 40cm telescope. We have observed 9 telecommunication satellites and 1 weather satellite of 6 countries. The obtained spectral data showed that satellites could be classified and grouped with similar basic spectral feature. We divided the 10 satellites into 4 groups based on spectral slop and reflectance. It is suggested that the material types of the satellites can be determined through spectral comparisons with the ground laboratory data. We will continuously observe additional geo-stationary satellites for the accurate classification of spectral features.

  • Since the telemetry performance using the time-delayed data dissipates the wireless channel resources, we propose the spectral efficient retransmission scheme in this paper. In the proposed scheme, the telemetry data is retransmitted based on triggered memory to improve the spectral efficiency. The proposed scheme minimizes the error caused by multipath fading, antenna pattern as well as the error caused by the flight events. In the flight simulation data, we show the proposed scheme improves the telemetry performance based on spectral efficient retransmission.

  • An analysis of light curves and spectra of observed gamma-ray bursts in gamma-ray ranges is frequently demanded because the prompt emission contains immediate details regarding the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We have revisited the relationship between the collimation-corrected peak luminosity and the spectral lag, investigating the lag-luminosity relationships in great detail by focusing on spectral lags resulting from all possible combinations of channels. Firstly, we compiled the opening angle data and demonstrated that the distribution of opening angles of 205 long GRBs is represented by a double Gaussian function having maxima at ~ 0.1 and ~ 0.3 radians. We confirmed that the peak luminosity and the spectral lag are anti-correlated, both in the observer frame and in the source frame. We found that, in agreement with our previous conclusion, the correlation coefficient improves significantly in the source frame. It should be noted that spectral lags involving channel 2 (25-50 keV) yield high correlation coefficients, where Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) has four energy channels (channel 1: 15-25 keV, channel 2: 25-50 keV, channel 3: 50-100 keV, channel 4: 100-200 keV). We also found that peak luminosity is positively correlated with peak energy.

  • We performed Principle Component Analysis (PCA) over 264 galaxies in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (Sanders et al., 2003) using 12, 25, 60 and $100{\mu}m$ flux data observed by IRAS and 9, 18, 65, 90 and $140{\mu}m$ flux data observed by AKARI. We found that (i)the first principle component was largely contributed by infrared to visible flux ratio, (ii)the second principal component was largely contributed by the flux ratio between IRAS and AKARI, (iii)the third principle component was largely contributed by infrared colors.
