  • This paper is to present an approach for generating coarse resolution (MODIS data) fraction images of forested region in Korea peninsula using forest type area fraction derived from high resolution data (ASTER data) in regional forest area. A 15-m spatial resolution multi-spectral ASTER image was acquired under clear sky conditions on September 22, 2003 over the forested area near Seoul, Korea and was used to select each end-member that represent a pure reflectance of component of forest such as different forest, bare soil and water. The area fraction of selected each end-member and a 500-m spatial resolution MODIS reflectance product covering study area was applied to a linear mixture inversion model for calculating the fraction image of forest component across the South Korea. We found that the area fraction values of each end-member observed from high resolution image data could be used to separate forest cover in low resolution image data.

  • From the legumes of Albizzia julibrissin Durazzini (Leguminosae), a mixture of long-chain alcohols, ${\alpha}-spinasterol$, a mixture of acylated sterol glycosides and ${\alpha}-spinasteryl$ $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ were isolated. Two mixtures of long-chain alcohols and acylated sterol glycosides were characterized as 1-hexacosanol (major) and 1-tetracosanol, and $3-O-[6'-O-palmitoyl-{\beta}-D-glucosyl]-{\alpha}-spinasterol$ (major) and its 6'-O-stearoyl ester. All compounds were identified on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions.

• For exact classification of the defect, good feature selection and classifier is necessary. In this paper, various features such as brightness features, shape features and statistical features are stated and Bayes classifier using Gaussian mixture model is used as classifier. Also feature extraction method based on spectral graph theory is presented. Experimental result shows that feature extraction method using graph Laplacian result in better performance than the result using PCA.

  • The phytochemical study of nutmeg, the seeds of Myristica fragrans Houttuyn (Myristicaceae) led to the isolation of three lignans, safrole (I), macelignan (III), and a 3,4 : 3',4'-bis(methylenedioxy)lignan (II). The compound II was identified by a mixture (1:1) of (8S, 8'R)- and (8S, 8'S)-forms of bis(3, 4-methylenedioxy)-8, 8'-neolignan by $^1$H-, $^{13}$ C-NMR and $^1$H-$^1$H COSY spectral data. The compound II was isolated for the first time from Myristica fragrans.

  • In order to investigate effect of the carotenoids (Car) on aggregation of Bacterochlorophyll (BChl) in chlorosome, we studied the spectral difference in aggregates of BChl e formed in the absence and presence of a few kinds of Car in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) -water solution. The absorption spectra of aggregates made of only BChl e and those made of a mixture of BChl e and Car were almost the same. However, the kinetics and circular dichroism (CD) spectra of aggregate of these were markedly different by kind of Car. Specifically, the rate of aggregation for a mixture of BChl e and isorenietene that contains phenyl as end groupe was faster than that for only BChl e. CD spectra of aggregates made of a mixture of BChl e and isorenietene dramatically changed compared to that made of only BChl e. We propose that BChl might form several kinds of rod-like supramolecular structures to in the presence of some kind of Car in chlorosome.

  • The technology of sulfur lamps that has physical and electrical characteristics comparable to current HID source has been reported. The fundamental principles of the operation of microwave discharges that are used to convert microwave energy to broad spectrum visual light are known. In this paper, emission dependance of microwave discharges in mixture content of sulfur with noble gases was studied. It is shown that the excitation of this gaseous mixture is carried out in two phases: (l) ionization of noble gas atoms by a microwave field and (2) the consequent maintenance of slightly ionized nonequilibrium plasma by the field. These two processes have essentially various thresholds for the microwave pump. The purpose of this work is to investigate spectral properties of the high frequency discharges in a mixture sulfur vapors with noble gases.

  • This study was conducted to assess the feasibility of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid and reliable method for the estimation of crude protein (CP) fractions in forage legume mixtures (sudangrass and pea mixture, and kidney bean and potato mixture). A total of 178 samples were collected and their spectral reflectance obtained in the range of 400~2,500 nm. Of these, 50 samples were selected for calibration and validation, and 35 samples were used for calibration of the data set, and the modified partial least square regression (MPLSR) analysis was performed. The correlation coefficient ($r^2$) and the standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of the calibration models in the CP fractions, A, B1, B2, B3, and C, were 0.94 (1.05), 0.92 (0.74), 0.96 (0.95), 0.91 (0.42), and 0.83 (0.38), respectively. Fifteen samples were used for equation validation, and the $r^2$ and the standard error of prediction (SEP) were 0.87 (1.45), 0.91 (0.49), 0.94 (1.13), 0.36 (0.96), and 0.74 (0.67), respectively. This study showed that NIRS could be an effective tool for the rapid and precise estimation of CP fractions in forage legume mixtures.
