  • Purpose: To evaluate the vision-specific Quality of Life according to modes of refractive error correction in myopia. Method: This study included subjects from two different universities in Korea during March 2005 to June 2005. The following subjects (470) were university students, university faculty members, and their immediate families; all of whom were over the age of 19 and all who had refractive error of some sort. The four focus groups consisted of 171 spectacle wearers, 154 contact lens wearers, 123 refractive surgery patients, and 22 post-refractive surgery patients who returned to wearing glasses. The study of Vision-Specific Quality of Life used QIRC - The Quality of Life Impact of refractive Correction Questionnaire, which was translated by our group from English into Korean. Using analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) and adjusting for age, sex, job, economic status, and education level, we examined and compared the QOL mean scores of the three groups (glass & contact lenses wears, refractive surgery patients, and post-refractive surgery patients who returned to wearing glasses). Results: After adjusting for major compounding variance, the research results showed the highest QOL mean score of 43.2 for the group who had received refractive surgery, 37.1 for the glasses & contact lenses group, and 33.4 for patients who had returned to wearing glasses after refractive surgery. There were significant differences between the three groups (p=0.001). Conclusion: Refractive surgery has shown a significant contribution to improve the QOL in myopia patients. However, upon our investigation, patients who underwent refractive surgery and returned to wearing glasses had a lower QOL compared to non-refractive surgery patients who wore glasses/contact lenses. Upon concluding our studies that shows that refractive surgery does not always conclusively bring higher QOL, we would like patients to carefully consider their options before undergoing refractive surgery in the future.

  • Purpose: We have analyzed the transmittance distribution of various ocular lenses using local transmittance microscope to investigate the optical homogeneity of the lens. Methods: The local transmittance of the laser which is focused on the surface of the spectacle lens was measured by using the photo-detector, lock-in amplifier and motorized-stage. 25 multi-coated lenses with non-tinted of 5 groups and 45 multicoated lenses with tinted of 9 groups were analyzed as a sample respectively. Results: Average and deviation of local transmittance for nontinted lenses were measured almost uniformly with various refractive index and coating. However, deviation of transmittance of for tinted lenses was analyzed as about 3.7 times larger than that of non-tinted lenses. Inhomogeneity of local transmittance of for tinted lenses was also analyzed as about 3.1 times larger than that of non-tinted lenses. Conclusions: We could analyze that standard deviation of transmittance and inhomogeneity of local transmittance of for tinted lenses is larger than that of non-tinted lenses using the local transmittance microscope. These analysis using local transmittance microscope can be utilized as a way to evaluate lens performance and improve optical homogeneity.

  • Purpose: The objective of the study: At present, the spectacles, with its use as a medical aids or a fashion trimming, are recognized as one of the living necessities which can't be separated from human body. One of the features of spectacles is that it must be worn on any part of human body. Such a feature has to be satisfied under the condition an user keeps feeling comfortable with the rim of spectacles worn. In order to ensure meeting this condition, a criterion has to be arranged for the design of the rim of spectacles. In order to manufacture a rim of spectacles which allows an user to secure a comfortable range of vision as well as enhancing the feeling when to be worn, a manufacturing standard has to be established based on optical science. No precise rim of spectacles could be made from the manufacturing method depending on the manufacturer's sensibility. When the rim of spectacles was manufactured according to the incorrect standards, it may cause an user such a fatal result as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. Methods: This study focuses on providing a detailed explanation about the design of rim, which is the most important element during designing a rim of spectacles, making use of the optical elements of spectacles, and helping the manufacturers and the people who work in the spectacles-related business understand and recognize what is correct and exact and then leading them to establish a standard in respect to the manufacture and selection of spectacles. Results, Conclusions: Considering the fact there happen many errors in relation with the names of rim stipulated in the provisions of International Standards Organization (ISO), due to wrong interpretation by some of the rim manufacturers, the right interpretation should be given about the bridge which is directly connected to rim, so that the rims of spectacles manufactured in Korea could keep a favorable position in competing with the foreign products of same kinds.

  • It is well known that the maximum amplitude of accommodation decreases with increasing age.(Presbyopia). With single vision lenses presbyopia can be corrected only for one viewing distance. With progressive power lenses presbyopia can be corrected for all viewing distances. But there are some other changes in the visual system with age which can not be corrected by spectacle lenses. Pupillary diameter decreases and the light transmission of the ocular media decreases. Therefore old people need more light, they need better illumination. Cone density in the retina decreases, this is only one example for changes in the sensory system. These changes in the visual system cause changes in visual functions. At the age of 80 visual acuity has decreased to half. Contrast sensitivity for gratings decreases mainly for high spatial frequencies very important is the increase of stray light in the ocular media and therefore the increase of glare. Veiling luminance increases by a multiple of approximately 4, Dark adaptation gets slower and light sensitivity is approximately 2 log units (factor 100) less when the eye is completely dark adapted. Also colour vision gets worse, especially at low luminances. Elderly people have problems with visual tasks which require divided attention between foveal and peripheral vision. An example is the measurement of the useful field of view. This useful field of view be expanded (improved) by visual training.

  • Purpose: We measured the amplitude of accommodation using the push-up and push-away tests and near point of convergence (NPC) and investigated the accommodative insufficiency (AI) and convergence insufficiency (CI) in elementary school children of 12~13 years old. Methods: 88 students who aged 12~13 $12.63{\pm}0.51$ years old with more than 1.0 spectacle best corrected visual acuity were examined using push-up and push-away tests. The break and recovery points of NPC also were measured. Results: Mean amplitudes of accommodations using push-up and push-away tests were $11.52{\pm}2.50D$ and $10.06{\pm}1.97D$, respectively in right eye (P<0.001). Mean break and recovery points in NPC were $8.66{\pm}1.99cm$ and $10.98{\pm}2.06cm$. AI and CI showed 28.75% and 30.00% each. 48.75% was within normal range in both amplitudes of accommodations according to their age expected and convergence. Students having both AI and CI were 7.50%. Conclusions: A high correlation between the push-up test and push-away test was found in elementary school children (r=0.6025; P<0.05). Students having normal amplitude of accommodation by their age expected and normal convergence were 71.25% and 70.00%, respectively.

  • This paper focalizes on the 'evolution' of monster animation and . Actually, Many characters' 'Evolution' is a very powerful convention of Japanese genre animation. Lots of young people feel a huge pleasure about character's evolution. It is a fantastic spectacle to boys and girls. The first characteristic point of characters' evolution is growing-up body to an adult. For example, magical girls genre shows a woman's sexy body. This scene gives a sexual fantasy to young girl spectators, a voyeuristic visual pleasure to young boy spectators. The second point is that a transforming-body gains some super power or magical power. The third point is that a great many characters is in one text. In , characters' numbers go on increasing through 6 ways-hybrid type, mutant-reiteration type, metamorphosis type, simple-grownup type, narrative type, multiple evolution type. The evolution of has to pay attention to only one transforming way. Most Digimon characters are becoming to a human-weapons cyborg. In my opinion, this is very dangerous phenomenon with a political ideology.

  • The Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis introduced by a roboticist, Masahiro Mori. The theory holds that as robots and other facsimiles of humans look and act more human-like, the emotional response from a human spectator to them will become increasingly empathic, until they approach realistic similarity to humans but not quite exactly like them, when those images stop being likable and instead become repulsive and "uncanny." Although the scientific validity of this hypothesis is still debatable, it is true that many spectators has tendency to reject hyper-realistic animation. For that reason, the great success of the recent movie Avatar is remarkable. Computer animations that try to represent humans in hyper-realistic way fall into a paradox: successful result images would look too mundane and unsuccessful ones look "wrong". On top of that, audience would expect from hyper-realistic animation to see same level of acting of live-action films, which is usually not the case. The subtle differences between digital characters and real actors irritate spectators and hinder them in absorbtion. The biggest difference between Avatar and other hyper-realistic animation is the referent of their representation. While Avatar pursues a similar hyper-realistic visual style, the referents of the representation shown in this movie are totally alien to us thus impossible to compare with the real counterparts. Unlike characters in other hyper-realistic animations who had to fight an uphill battle with great actors in real life, those in Avatar have criteria of their own. That is why this movie can be free from the dreadful valley and let the audience absorb into the spectacle.

  • During the last two decades, many new filling materials and material groups have been developed. the number of available restoratives has increased dramatically, especially during the last 5 years. Ormocers are a new class of materials which are still under development with regard to dental applications. However, in the chemical literature these materials have been known for a long time and used for producing scratch resistant coatings on plastic spectacle lenses. It is a combination of inorganic and organic materials. 'Ormocer' is an abbreviation for 'Organically Modified Ceramics'. These compounds are also known in the literature as 'Ormosils' (organically modified silicates). Their chemistry is comparable to that of silicones and organic polymers. The purpose of this study was to determine of compressive strength and flexural strength of a ormocer (Admira) and to investigate the effects of water absorption in comparison with three composite resins(Z-100, Tetric Ceram, Surefil) and one compomer(Dyract AP). The following results were obtained ; 1. Admira had the lower compressive strength than Surefil, but no statistically difference with other materials at 1 day(p>0.05). 2. Admira had the lower flexural strength than all other materials at 1 day. From 2 days, Admits showed lower flexural strength than three composite resin(p<0.05). 3. There was not statistically significant difference of compressive and flexural strengths between hybrid composite resin group(Z-100, Tetric Ceram) and Packable resin group(Surefil) for experimental period(30 days)(p>0.05). 4. All five materials showed an increase in compressive and flexural strength till 2 days and showed a decrease from 7 days in water(p<0.05). 5. Each materials had the statistically similar behavior of compressive and flexural strengths over time(p>0.05).

  • The mediacy is now evolving with the development of mankind civilization. In the evolution, mediacy shows duplicate logic of remediacy with the opposite mediacy property between immediacy and hypermediacy. The duplicate logic of remediacy is defined as a result of hypermediacy which clearly requires transparency and absorption of immediacy. Because of changes from analog to digital age and the development of image technique, At present, the era is coming when the splendid and spectacle visual speaks for the screen not well-organized script and direction. With this developing period, the research for visual effect is actively performed and advanced to the new study. Though the study of visual effects contains the hypermediacy trait, it is also conjugated as a research field for immediacy on the screen which is the wish of content production directors. In this study, the analysis of case study for the movie "The Lord of The ring"'s visual effect application is carried out. Also, it is investigated that visual effects can guarantee for the verification of valuable new research filed which insure transparency and absorption in the hypermediacy results. Furthermore, on this study, it is executed for the contribution of the identity and systematization in the new research field "Visual Effects".

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the changes in distance refractive power and reading addition that occur after wearing corrective glasses for prebyopia. Methods: The subjects aged 42 to 75 years who had no ophthalmologic diseases and did not undergo cataract or retina surgery, had a corrected visual acuity of 20/20 and did not have a previous history of wearing corrective glasses for presbyopia. These subjects were divided into 3 groups: the control, reading spectacles and multifocals wearing group and they were measured for distance refractive power and reading addition at their visit. The maximum follow-up period was 73 months. Results: As for distance refractive power, the power tends to shift to hyperopia depending on age (r=0.486, p<.001) and 50.0% of the subjects increased plus power during this study period. Plus power Increments per year in distance refractive power in the reading spectacle wearing group were significantly different with control and multifocals wearing group (p<.05). On the other hand, the multifocals wearing group's increments were not different with control. Increments in reading addition were also increased in the reading spectacles group than in the control and multifocals wearing groups (p<.05). Conclusions: The age related hyperopic shift could be occurred in the elderly people, routine refraction is mandatory. And reading spectacles could induce an age related hyperopic shift and the additional need for reading addition that the prescription of multifocals may reduce changes in distance refractive power and reading addition.
