Electric Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) using a CW-laser, a video system and an image processor was applied to the thermal coefficient measurements on free thermal expansions at high temperatures : ESPI provides the distribution of in-plane displacement resolved in a preselected direction. ESPI retains the merits of little or no surface preparation, no contact with the surface and the real-time presentation of interference fringes. Appling ESPI at high temperatures, several problem which caused the reduction of fringe visibility were encountered. The problem on the turbulence in the hot air surrounding high temperature objects will be solved by using a vacuum chamber. The background radiations from the objects were suppressed considerably by an interference filter. The problem on the oxidation of the object surface could't be solved. The interference fringe, whose spacings were calculated by FFT to avoid human error, were observable up to $800^{\circ}C$. The results measured by ESPI were nearly equal to the data which have already been published, up to about $800^{\circ}C$.

An optical defect detection method using ESPI(electronic speckle pattern interferometry) is proposed. ESPI is widely used as a non-contact measurement system which show deformation and phase map in real time. ESPI can be divided as the in-plane, out-of-plane and shearography by operation principle and target object and also divided with bulk type and optic fiber type by the optic configurations. This paper is focused on optic fiber type out-of-plane ESPI, which has the following advantages: (1) low cost; (2) reduction of the unreliable factors generated by separated optic components; (3) simplification of the optic configuration; (4) great reduction of volume; (5) flexibility, to be easily designed into different structures to adapt to inaccessible environments such as pipeline cavity and so on.

In this paper, an algorithm using RGB-depth camera is proposed to detect smoke in interrior. RGB-depth camera, the Kinect provides RGB color image and depth information. The Kinect sensor consists of an infra-red laser emitter, infra-red camera and an RGB camera. A specific pattern of speckles radiated from the laser source is projected onto the scene. This pattern is captured by the infra-red camera and is analyzed to get depth information. The distance of each speckle of the specific pattern is measured and the depth of object is estimated. As the depth of object is highly changed, the depth of object plain can not be determined by the Kinect. The depth of smoke can not be determined too because the density of smoke is changed with constant frequency and intensity of infra-red image is varied between each pixels. In this paper, a smoke detection algorithm using characteristics of the Kinect is proposed. The region that the depth information is not determined sets the candidate region of smoke. If the intensity of the candidate region of color image is larger than a threshold, the region is confirmed as smoke region. As results of simulations, it is shown that the proposed method is effective to detect smoke in interior.

Laser interferometry is widely used as a measuring system in many fields because of its high resolution and its ability to measure a broad area in real-time all at once. In conventional laser interferometry, for example out-of-plane ESPI (Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry), in plane ESPI, shearography and holography, it uses PZT or other components as a phase shift instrumentation to extract 3-D deformation data, vibration mode and others. However, in most cases PZT has some disadvantages, which include nonlinear errors and limited time of use. In the present study, a new type of laser interferometry using a laser diode is proposed. Using Laser Diode Sinusoidal Phase Modulating (LD-SPM) interferometry, the phase modulation can be directly modulated by controlling the laser diode injection current thereby eliminating the need for PZT and its components. This makes the interferometry more compact. This paper reports on a new approach to the LD (Laser Diode) Modulating interferometry that involves four-frame phase shift method. This study proposes a four-frame phase mapping algorithm, which was developed to have a guaranteed application, to stabilize the system in the field and to be a user-friendly GUI. In this paper, the theory for LD wavelength modulation and sinusoidal phase modulation of LD modulating interferometry is shown. Using modulating laser and research of measurement algorithm does comparison with existent ESPI measurement algorithm. Algorithm measures using GPIB communication through most LabVIEW 8.2. GPIB communication does alteration through PC. Transformation of measurement object measures through modulating laser algorithm that develops. Comparison of algorithm of modulating laser developed newly with existent PZT algorithm compares transformation price through 3-D. Comparison of 4-frame phase mapping, unwrapping, 3-D is then introduced.

In this paper, we proposed a method for estimating an accurate gamut based on segment maxima method. According to the number of segments in the segment maxima, a local concavity is generated in the vicinity of lightness axis or a gamut is reduced in high chroma region. It induces artifacts or deterioration of the image quality. To remove these artifacts, the number of segment is determined according to the number of samples. and a local concavity is modified by extending a detected concave point to the line connecting two adjacent boundary points. Experimental results show that the contours in a uniform color region and speckle artifacts from the conventional segment maxima algorithm are removed.

The spherical glasses lenses are typically classified into two groups such as (+) diopter lens and (-) diopter lens by the refractive power index. The thermal deformation of a lens is occurred by external heat source and is changed respected to the diopter of a lens. In this paper, the thermal deformation of spherical glasses lenses were quantitatively measured by using ESPI (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) which has an advantage that the non-contact, non-destructive and precise deformation measurement is available due to the coherency characteristic. The temperature changes were measured by IR camera. It makes experiments over 14 types of the plastic glasses lenses. From the results, it was confirmed that the larger diopter lens showed the less thermal deformation in case of the (+) diopter lens. On the other hand, the thermal deformation of the (-) diopter lens was measured with uniform pattern when the same temperature changes were applied. Also, it was found that the thermnal deformation of the (+) diopter lens is less than that of the (-) diopter lens. Therefore, it is expected that when the thermal deformation is occurred to the various types of the lens, the variation of the focal length caused by the thermal distortion of a lens would be measured quantitatively.

Dual-function interferometer is an interferometer that has all features of ESPI (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) and shearography in one interferometer setup. The deformatiou of an object is directly obtained by ESPI while the slope of the deformation of an object is obtained by shearography. If the result of shearography is divided by shearing amount and integrated by numerical analyzing, then finally the reconstructed deformation of an object that is the same as the results directly obtained by ESPI can be measured by shearography. In this study, rubber and alruminum plates are used as specimen and its out-of-plane deformation is measured by ESPI and shearography setup of the dual-function interferometer. Each of the results obtained by ESPI and shearography is compared by using numerical integration to the result of shearography. From this study, it is confirmed that the reconstructed deformation results obtained by numerical integration good agree with the results obtained by ESPI.
Analysing the incompatible deformation and damage evolution around the tunnels in mixed strata is significant for evaluating the tunnel stability, as well as the interaction between the support system and the surrounding rock mass. To investigate this issue, confined compression tests were conducted on upper-soft and lower-hard strata specimens containing a circular hole using a rock testing system, the physical mechanical properties were then investigated. Then, the incompatible deformation and failure modes of the specimens were analysed based on the digital speckle correlation method (DSCM) and Acoustic Emission (AE) data. Finally, numerical simulations were conducted to explore the damage evolution of the mixed strata. The results indicate that at low inclination angles, the deformation and v-shaped notches inside the hole are controlled by the structure plane. Progressive spalling failure occurs at the sidewalls along the structure plane in soft rock. But the transmission of the loading force between the soft rock and hard rock are different in local. At high inclination angles, v-shaped notches are approximately perpendicular to the structure plane, and the soft and hard rock bear common loads. Incompatible deformation between the soft rock and hard rock controls the failure process. At inclination angles of 0°, 30° and 90°, incompatible deformations are closely related to rock damage. At 60°, incompatible deformations and rock damage are discordant due that the soft rock and hard rock alternately bears the major loads during the failure process. The failure trend and modes of the numerical results agree very well with those observed in the experimental results. As the inclination angles increase, the proportion of the shear or tensile damage exhibits a nonlinear increase or decrease, suggesting that the inclination angle of mixed strata may promote shear damage and restrain tensile damage.

Thanks to the multimedia technology development, it is possible to show image representations in high quality and to process images in various ways. Anisotropic diffusion as an effective diffusion filtering among many image preprocessing methods and postprocessing methods is used in reduction of speckle noises of ultrasound images, image restoration, edge detection, and image segmentation. However, the conventional anisotropic diffusion based on a cross-kernel causes the following problems. The problem is the concentration of edges in the vertical or horizontal directions. In this paper, a new anisotropic diffusion transform based on directions of gradient is proposed. The proposed method uses the eight directional square-kernel which is an expanded form of the cross-kernel. The proposed method is to select directions of small gradient based on square-kernel. Therefore, the range of proposed diffusion is selected adaptively according to the number of the directions of gradient. Experimental results show that the proposed method can decrease the concentration of edges in the vertical or horizontal directions, remove impulse noise. The image in high quality can be obtained as a result of the proposed method.

To produce a level-3 monthly composite image from daily level-2 Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll-a concentration data set in the East Sea, we applied four average methods such as the simple average method, the geometric mean method, the maximum likelihood average method, and the weighted averaging method. Prior to performing each averaging method, we classified all pixels into normal pixels and abnormal speckles with anomalously high chlorophyll-a concentrations to eliminate speckles from the following procedure for composite methods. As a result, all composite maps did not contain the erratic effect of speckles. The geometric mean method tended to underestimate chlorophyll-a concentration values all the time as compared with other methods. The weighted averaging method was quite similar to the simple average method, however, it had a tendency to be overestimated at high-value range of chlorophyll-a concentration. Maximum likelihood method was almost similar to the simple average method by demonstrating small variance and high correlation (r=0.9962) of the differences between the two. However, it still had the disadvantage that it was very sensitive in the presence of speckles within a bin. The geometric mean was most significantly deviated from the remaining methods regardless of the magnitude of chlorophyll-a concentration values. Its bias error tended to be large when the standard deviation within a bin increased with less uniformity. It was more biased when data uniformity became small. All the methods exhibited large errors as chlorophyll-a concentration values dominantly scatter in terms of time and space. This study emphasizes the importance of the speckle removal process and proper selection of average methods to reduce composite errors for diverse scientific applications of satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration data.
