  • Metabolizable energy (ME) required for basal metabolism, activity and growth was considered as the criterion for targeting specific increases in body weight (100 g/week) of broiler chicks during the grower phase (5-20 weeks) and its impact was evaluated on breeder performance. Broiler female chicks (460) from a synthetic dam line were randomly distributed to 4 test groups with 23 replicates of 5 birds each and housed in cages. The first group (ME-100) was offered a calculated amount of ME by providing a measured quantity of grower diet (160 g protein and 2,600 kcal ME/kg) which increased with age and weight gain (133-294 kcal/bird/day). The other three groups were offered 10 or 20% less ME (ME-90 and ME-80, respectively) and 10% excess ME (ME-110) over the control group (ME-100). From 21 weeks of age, a single breeder diet (170 g protein and 2,600 kcal ME/kg) was uniformly fed to all groups and the impact of grower ME restriction on breeder performance evaluated up to 58 weeks. The targeted body weight gain of 1,600 g in a 16-week period was achieved by pullets of the ME-100 group almost one week earlier by gaining 8.7 g more weight per week. However, pullets in the ME-90 group gained 1,571 g during the same period, which was closer to the targeted weight. At 20 weeks of age, the conversion efficiency of feed (5.21-5.37), ME (13.9-14.1 kcal/g weight gain) and protein (0.847-0.871 g/g weight gain), eviscerated meat yield, giblet and tibia weights were not influenced by ME restriction, but the weights of abdominal fat and liver were higher with increased ME intake. Reduction of ME by 10% in the grower period significantly delayed sexual maturity (169.3 d), but increased egg production (152.5 /bird) with better persistency. Improved conversion efficiency of feed, ME and protein per g egg content were also observed in this group up to 56 weeks. The fertility and hatchability at 58 weeks of age were higher in the ME-90 group compared to the control and 10% excess ME feeding. In conclusion, the present study revealed the possibility of achieving targeted weight gain in broiler growers by feeding measured quantities of ME during the rearing period with consequential benefits in breeder performance.

  • In this study, we attempted to assess the efficacy of a method to improve the quality of prepared bread via the addition Poria cocos powder to wheat flour at a range of concentrations from $0{\sim}5%$. The approximate composition for Poria cocos powder was as follow: moisture 7.67%, crude protein 0.61%, crude fat 0.58%, crude ash 0.32%, and crude fiber 0.30%, when using the flour to which the Poria cocos powder had been added, specific volume, falling number, and dough yield values all increased with increasing concentrations of added Poria cocos powder. The result of our microscopic observations revealed a relative scarcity of larger starch granules, and the bread prepared with the Poria cocos powder evidenced a sparse structure. With regard to the Hunters color value measurements, the L value decreased with increasing concentrations of Poria cocos powder. but the a and b values evidenced an inverse relationship with the concentration of added powder. The texture, hardness, and adhesiveness characteristics of the bread decreased with increasing concentration of added Poria cocos powder. but the gumminess and chewiness of the bread increased. However, we noted no significant differences in the springiness and cohesiveness characteristics among the experimental groups assessed herein. In the sensory evaluation, the quality of the 2% or 3% Poria cocos powder breads was optimal in terms of its taste and flavor.

  • A 2-D unconfined flow model is developed to analyze annual variations of groundwater level and bank filtration rate (BFR) for an experimental riverbank filtration site in Koryeong, Korea. Two types of boundary conditions are examined for the river boundary in the conceptual model: the static head condition that uses the average water level of the river and the dynamic cyclic condition that incorporates annual fluctuation of water level. Simulations show that the estimated BFR ranges $74.3{\sim}87.0%$ annually with the mean of 82.4% for the static head boundary condition and $52.7{\sim}98.1%$ with the mean of 78.5% for the dynamic cyclic condition. The results illustrate that the dynamic cyclic condition should be used for accurate evaluation of BFR. Simulations also show that increase of the distance between the river and the pumping wells slightly decreases BFR up to 4%, and thereby indicate that it is not a critical factor to be accounted for in designing BFR of the bank filtration system. A sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the effects of model parameters such as hydraulic conductivity and specific yield of the aquifer, recharge rate, and pumping rate. The results demonstrate that the average groundwater level and BFR are most sensitive to both the pumping rate and the recharge rate, while the water level of the pumping wells is sensitive to the hydraulic conductivity and the pumping rate.

  • Probably the three most important components to a comprehensive evaluation of patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are the clinical interview, the medical examination, and the completion and scoring or behavior rating scales. Teachers and other school personnel are often the first to recognize that a child or adolescent might have ADHD, and often play an important role in the help-seeking/referral process. A diagnostic evaluation for ADHD should include questions about ADHD symptoms, other problems including alcohol and drug use, family history of ADHD, prior evaluation and treatment for ADHD. Screening interview or rating scales as well as interviews should be used. When it is feasible, clinicians may wish to supplement these components of the evaluation with objective assessments of the ADHD symptoms, such as psychological tests. These tests are not essential to reaching a diagnosis, however, or to treatment planning, but they may yield further information about the presence and severity of cognitive impairments that could be associated with some cases of ADHD. Screening for intellectual ability and academic achievement skills is also important in determining the presence of comorbid developmental delay or loaming disabilities. The number and type of symptoms required for a diagnosis of ADHD vary depending on the specific subtype. To receive a diagnosis of ADHD, the person must be experiencing significant distress or impairment in daily functioning, and must not meet criteria for other mental disorders which might better account for the observed symptoms such as mental retardation, autism or other pervasive developmental disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders. This report aims to suggest a practice guideline of assessment and diagnosis for children and adolescents with ADHD in Korea.

  • Direct conversion of starchy materials to single cell protein of Sporobolomyces holsaticus FRI Y-5 was investigated. Effect of yeast extract concentration on its cell growth showed that it could utilize more of starch in the medium containing 2.5 g/l of yeast extract. In case of jar fermentor culture, the specific growth rate and cell yield of Sp. holsaticus on soluble starch were calculated to be $0.14\;hr^{-1}$ and 0.425, respectively and its maximum cell concentration was 13.4 g/l. After 80 hr of incubation time, 45.96% of starch was consumed and 45.1% of relative blue value was decreased. Reducing sugars in the starch medium seemed to increase from 4.06 g/l to 6.08 g/l and then to decrease. During fermentor culture, pH of medium was almost not changed in the range of $pH\;7.0{\pm}0.5$. The optimal temperature and pH of Sp. holsaticus amylase activity were $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5, respectively. It was shown from the effect of Tapioca starch concentration on the cell growth that the optimal concentration of Tapioca starch for Sp. holsaticus was lower than that of soluble starch. FRI Y-5 cells settled much slower than Sp. holsaticus IFO 1032 cells and the viscosity vs cell concentration relationship was related to be linear.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a data base for material selection of turbofan engines, which is preferred in these days on many application due to their high performance with economical operation. Hundreds of Super Alloys have been developed by this time, each having special properties. Since it is very difficult task for a design engineer to select materials of adequate Properties for specific engine components, a good data bate is strongly desired to manage informations on various kinds of materials. However, no basic research is reported in this area so far in our country. The operating conditions such as temperature, pressure, rpm of spools are assumed to be provided by other mechanical studies. Creep rupture strength, corrosion resistance, yield strength, thermal expansion, melting point, etc., are considered as typical properties in this study to search a group of candidate materials. Formability, manufacturing or purchase cost can also be important variables to be considered. As a result of this study, a user-friendly computer program has been developed for input of new material information, interactive material selection, and output of selection results. Finally, discussion is presented from. the viewpoint of materials engineering. A method to evaluate the performance of the selected materials is also suggested.

  • In order to assess the possibility whether CYP2D is involved in caffeine metabolism, we have purified and characterized the rat liver microsomal cytochrome P4502D1 (CYP2D1), equivalent to CYP2D6 in human liver, and have utilized the reconstituted CYP2D1 in the metabolism of 4 primary caffeine (1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine) metabolites such as paraxanthine (1, 7-dimethylxanthine), 1, 3, 7-trimethylurate, theophylline (1, 3-dimethylxanthine) and theobromine (3, 7-dimethylxanthine). Rat liver CYP 2D1 has been purified to a specific content of 8.98 nmole/mg protein (13.4fold purification, 1.5% yield) using $\omega$-aminooctylagarose, hydroxlapatite, and DE52 columns in a sequential manner. As judged from sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), the purified CYP2D1 was apparently homogeneous. Molecular weight of the purified CYP2D1 was found to be 51, 000 Da. Catalytic activity of the purified and then reconstituted CYP2D1 was confirmed by using bufuralol, a known subsFate of CYP2D1. The reconstituted CYP2D1 was found to produce to 1-hydroxylbufuralol at a rate of 1.43$\pm$0.13 nmol/min/nmol P450. The kinetic analysis of bufuralol hydroxylation indicated that Km and Vmax values were 7.32$\mu M$ and 1.64 nmol/min/nmol P450, respectively. The reconstituted CYP2D1 could catalyze the 7-demethylation of PX to 1-methylxanthine at a rate of 12.5 pmol/min/pmol, and also the 7- and 3- demethylations of 1, 3, 7-trimethylurate to 1, 3-dimethylurate and 1, 7-dimethylurate at 6.5 and 12.8 pmol/min/pmol CYP2D1, respectively. The reconstituted CYP2D1 could also 3-demethylate theophylline to 1-methylxanthine at 5 pmol/min/pmol and hydroxylate the theophylline to 1, 3-dimethylurate at 21.8 pmol/min/pmol CYP2D1. The reconstituted CYP2D1, however, did not metabolize TB at all (detection limits were 0.03 pmol/min/pmol). This study indicated that CYP2D1 is involved in 3-and 7-demethylations of paraxanthine and theophylline and suggested that CYP2D6 (equivalent to CYP2D1 in rat liver) present in human liver may be involved in the secondary metabolism of the primary metabolites of caffeine.

  • The majority of daily travel demands concentrate at particular time-periods, which causes the difficulties in the travel demand analysis and the corresponding benefit estimation. Thus, it is necessary to consider time-specific traffic characteristics to yield more reliable results. Traditionally, na$\ddot{i}$ve, heuristic, and statistical approaches have been applied to address the peak-hour ratio. In this study, a hybrid clustering model which is one of the statistical methods is applied to calculate the peak-hour ratio and its duration. The 2009 national 24-hour traffic data provided by the Korea institute of Construction Technology are used. The analysis is conducted dividing vehicle types into passenger cars and trucks. For the verification for the usefulness of the methodology, the toll collection system data by the Korea Express Corporation are collected. The result of the research shows lower errors during the off-peak hours and night times and increasing error ratios as the travel distance increases. Since the method proposed can reduce the arbitrariness of analysts and can accommodate the statistical significance test, the model could be considered as a more robust and stable methodology. It is hoped that the result of this paper could contribute to the enhancement of the reliability for the travel demand analysis.

  • Hemipteran bugs, which were previously considered as secondary pests, have currently become important pests of numerous crops. Among them, Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) is a major species that occurs in Korea, Japan, China, and South Asian countries. Riptortus pedestris infests leguminous crops like soybean, vetches, and red clover; fruit trees like persimmon and yuju; and grains like barley, foxtail millet, broomcorn, and sorghum. Riptortus pedestris causes the greatest damage to soybean, as it is the most suitable host for the bug. Feeding damage during pod formation significantly reduces the yield of soybean. Currently, 17 insecticides, including diazinon and etofenprox, are registered for the control of hemipteran bugs in Korea, and growers apply insecticides two to three times on a regular basis. Aggregation pheromone traps are widely used as a monitoring tool and partial control measure. The aggregation pheromone of R. pedestris attracts conspecific adults and nymphs and is used for food exploitation rather than sexual attraction. In addition, the pheromone serves as a kairomone for egg parasitoids such as Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) and Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii. As a new method of pest management, nonviable host eggs were included in the pheromone trap to catch R. pedestris and propagate parasitoids. As a part of cultural practices, resistant soybean varieties with specific color and size of pod and control of flowering time through the alteration of planting date can be used. For the effective management of R. pedestris in the near future, development of cultural practices that can support natural control factors and the use of multiple control tactics are needed.

  • This paper presents a characterization method for faults of circuit patterns on MCM(Multichip Module) or PCB(Printed Circuit Board) substrates with electron beams of a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) by inducing voltage contrast on the signal line. The experimentation employes dual potential electron beams for the fault characterization of circuit patterns with a commercial SEM without modifying its structure. The testing procedure utilizes only one electron gun for the generation of dual potential electron beams by two different accelerating voltages, one for charging electron beam which introduces the yield of secondary electron $\delta$ < 1 and the other for reading beam which introduces $\delta$ > 1. Reading beam can read open's/short's of a specific net among many test nets, simultaneously discharging during the reading process for the next step, by removing its voltage contrast. The experimental results of testing the copper signal lines on glass-epoxy substrates showed that the state of open's/short's had generated the brightness contrast due to the voltage contrast on the surface of copper conductor line, when the net had charged with charging electron beams of 7KV accelerating voltages and then read with scanning reading electron beams of 2KV accelerating voltages in 10 seconds. The experimental results with Au pads of a IC die and Au plated Cu pads of BGA substrates provided the simple test method of circuit lines with 7KV charging electron beam and 2KV reading beam. Thus the characterization method showed that we can test open and short circuits of the net nondestructively by using dual potential electron beams with one SEM gun.
