  • PURPOSE: This study investigated the influence of a specific hip joint exercise program on the characteristics of chronic low back pain (LBP), hip joint range of motion (ROM), and performance level in amateur golfers with LBP. METHODS: The study included 28 adult male amateur golfers with LBP and reduced internal rotation (IR) of the lead side hip joint. Subjects were randomly assigned to an experimental (EG) (n=14) or control group (CG) (n=14). The Numerical Rating Scale score for pain, ROM of the hip joint and trunk rotation, performance parameters for golfing were evaluated. A specific exercise program designed to improve IR of the lead side hip joint was performed by the EG, but not the CG. Post-intervention evaluation was performed and the collected data were analyzed. RESULTS: After the intervention, the severity of LBP was significantly reduced (p<.05) and the IR ROM of the lead side hip joint was significantly increased (p<.01) in the EG. Moreover, the trunk rotation range was significantly increased in the EG (p<.01). The drive distance was significantly difference between the EG and CG (p<.05). CONCLUSION: A specific hip joint exercise program can help to reduce pain level and improve performance level in amateur golfers with LBP and increased IR ROM of the lead side hip joint. A significant increase in ROM of the lead side hip joint reduce LBP and was related to driving distance in the EG.

  • The state-of-art knowledge of highway performance analysis model was developed in this research and a computerized process named GUCAM(Geometric-specific User Cost Analysis Model) was established to facilitate the computational procedure. A comparison of GUCAM was made to HIAP program using a case study of widening two-lane rural highway into four-lane rural. The comparison indicated that GUCAM was more realistic and sensitive to the highway geometric features by virtue of the new methodology for the distribution of highway curves and grades. However, the model still remains insensitive to improvements at isolated locations such as specific grades or curves. Further research is required to straighten out this problem.

  • When a warm well located downgradient is captured by cold thermal plume originated from an upgradient cold well, the warm thermal plume is pushed further downgradient in the direction of groundwater flow. If groundwater flow direction is parallel to an aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), the warm well can no longer be utilized as a heat source during the winter season because of the reduced heat capacity of the warm groundwater. It has been found that when the specific discharge is increased by $1{\times}10^{-7}m/s$ in this situation, the performance of ATES is decreased by approximately 2.9% in the warm thermal plume, and approximately 6.5% in the cold thermal plume. An increase of the specific discharge in a permeable hydrogeothermal system with a relatively large hydraulic gradient creates serious thermal interferences between warm and cold thermal plumes. Therefore, an area comprising a permeable aquifer system with large hydraulic gradient should not be used for ATES site. In case of ATES located perpendicular to groundwater flow, when the specific discharge is increased by $1{\times}10^{-7}m/s$ in the warm thermal plume, the performance of ATES is decreased by about 2.5%. This is 13.8% less reduced performance than the parallel case, indicating that an increase of groundwater flow tends to decrease the thermal interference between cold and warm wells. The system performance of ATES that is perpendicular to groundwater flow is much better than that of parallel ATES.

  • In this study, the adsorption performance of vapor phase VOCs under dry conditions was evaluated by using two metal oxides, $TiO_2$ powder and $Al_2O_3$ powder. BET analysis and ammonia in-situ FT-IR analysis were used to analyze specific surface area and surface acid site. As a result, $TiO_2$ powder and $Al_2O_3$ powder had a specific surface area of $317.6m^2\;g^{-1}$ and $64m^2\;g^{-1}$, respectively. In the case of $TiO_2$ powder, many acid sites were observed on the surface. As a result of evaluating the vapor phase VOCs adsorption performance using two metal oxide powders, $TiO_2$ powder having a relatively large specific surface area and a large number of acid sites exhibited relatively good adsorption performance. In particular, it is considered that the specific surface area directly affects the adsorption performance, and further study on the effect of the acid site is required. Based on the $TiO_2$ exhibited excellent adsorption performance, it manufactured into various forms of honeycomb, hollow fiber and disc. As a result, the adsorption performance was lower than that of the powder, but it is advantageous in view of applicability. In addition, it was confirmed that the disc adsorbent having excellent thermal durability due to the characteristics of the manufacturing process stably maintains adsorption performance even at a high temperature desorption process several times.

  • Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared by activation of coal tar pitch (CTP) in the range of $700^{\circ}C-1000^{\circ}C$ for 1-4 h using potassium hydroxide (KOH) powder as the activation agent. The optimal activation conditions were determined to be a CTP/KOH ratio of 1:4, activation temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, and activation time of 3 h. The obtained ACs showed increased pore size distribution in the range of 1 to 2 nm and the highest specific capacitance of 122 F/g in a two-electrode system with an organic electrolyte, as measured by a charge-discharge method in the voltage range of 0-2.7 V. In order to improve the performance of the electric double-layer capacitor electrode, various mixtures of CTP and petroleum pitch (PP) were activated at the optimal activation conditions previously determined for CTP. Although the specific capacitance of AC electrodes prepared from CTP only and the mixtures of CTP and PP was not significantly different at a current density of 1 A/g, the AC electrodes from CTP and PP mixtures showed outstanding specific capacitance at higher current rates. In particular, CTP-PP61 (6:1 mixture) had the highest specific capacitance of 132 F/g, and the specific capacitance remained above 90% at a high current density of 3 A/g. It was found that the high specific capacitance could be attributed to the increased micro-pore volume of ACs with pore sizes from 1 to 2 nm, and the high power density could be attributed to the increased meso-pore volume.

  • [Purpose] The study aimed to determine the effects of bone-specific physical activity on body composition, bone mineral density (BMD), and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women. [Methods] One hundred eighty-six middle-aged women aged 31-49 years participated in this study. The subjects were divided into tertile groups according to the level of physical activity (low-score group, n=62; middle-score group, n=62; high-score group, n=62). Bone-specific physical activity participation was assessed using the bone-specific physical activity questionnaire. Body composition and BMD were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Health-related physical fitness test included isometric muscle strength (grip strength), muscular endurance (sit-ups), flexibility (sit and reach), and cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max]). [Results] The high-score group had a significantly higher fat-free mass (p=.045, partial eta-squared value[ηp2]=.033) than the middle- and low-score groups, whereas the high-score group had significantly lower percent body fat (p=.005, ηp2=.056) than the other two groups. Whole-body BMD (p=.034, ηp2=.036) and lumbar BMD (p=.003, ηp2=.060) were significantly higher in the high-score group than in the low-score group. The high-score group performed significantly better for grip strength (p=.0001, ηp2=.101), sit-ups (p=.0001, ηp2=.108), and VO2max (p=.0001, ηp2=.092) than the other two groups. [Conclusion] The present study suggests that bone-specific physical activity could be useful in improving body composition, BMD, and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women, significantly enhancing their BMD and health conditions.

  • Although the specific resistance to filtration is the most frequently employed means for characterizing dewaterability of a sludge, it presently is not possible to design nor to prediet performance of dewatering facilities using traditional linearized parabolic filtration equation, that is, the specific resistance model because of theoretical and practical inadequacies of the concept. Limitations of the specific resistance model reflect the need to examine fundamental sludge properties and filtration behaviors affecting dewaterability. From this study, two major limitations of the specific resistance model were noted. First, specific resistance values are very dependent on the sludge concentration because of the variations of particle size distribution and cake clogging to occur when surface area mean diameter is less than $25{\mu}m$ for activated sludge, $18{\mu}m$ for water treatment plant sludge. Second, nonparabolic filtration behavior can result from cake clogging, caused by the migration of fine particles into the cake pores, accelated by skin effect with highly compressible sludges.

  • A liquid rocket engine performance has been analyzed as a function of combustion pressure with LOx/RP-1R. The present method is verified by comparing the specific impulse for various combustion pressure with given pump head model. The optimal combustion pressure is between 150 bar and 200 bar for given efficiencies. Both the optimal combustion pressure and the specific impulse increase for increased turbine efficiency. The optimal combustion pressure decreases and the specific impulse increases for increased combustion efficiency. The pump efficiency and the turbine inlet temperature have the same qualitative effect as the turbine efficiency.

  • Performance evaluation was carried out for the 70 N-class hydrazine thruster whose design performance had been already verified. The pulse-mode firing test was conducted for the development model thrusters with various thrust chamber diameters. Evaluation was made by the performance parameters such as specific impulse, impulse bit, and characteristic velocity, etc: specific impulse and characteristic velocity were deteriorated as the thrust chamber diameter deviates from a standard model. Consequently, it is revealed that the performance characteristics of standard model is most superior among the test models.
