  • Spinning detonations propagating in a circular tube were numerically investigated with a one-step irreversible reaction model governed by Arrhenius kinetics. Activation energy is used as parameter as 10, 20, 27 and 35, and the specific heat ratio and the heat release are fixed as 1.2 and 50. The time evolution of the simulation results was utilized to reveal the propagation mechanism of single-headed spinning detonation. The track angle of soot record on the tube wall was numerically reproduced with various levels of activation energy, and the simulated unique angle was the same as that of the previous reports. The maximum pressure histories of the shock front on the tube wall showed stable pitch at Ea=10, periodical unstable pitch at Ea=20 and 27 and unstable pitch consisting of stable, periodical unstable and weak modes at Ea=35, respectively. In the weak mode, there is no Mach leg on the shock front, where the pressure level is much lower than the other modes. The shock front shapes and the pressure profiles on the tube wall clarified the mechanisms of these stable and unstable modes. In the stable pitch at Ea=10, the maximum pressure history on the tube wall remained nearly constant, and the steady single Mach leg on the shock front rotated at a constant speed. The high and low frequency pressure oscillations appeared in the periodical unstable pitch at Ea=20 and 27 of the maximum pressure history. The high frequency was one cycle of a self-induced oscillation by generation and decay in complex Mach interaction due to the variation in intensity of the transverse wave behind the shock front. Eventually, sequential high frequency oscillations formed the low frequency behavior because the frequency behavior was not always the same for each cycle. In unstable pitch at Ea=35, there are stable, periodical unstable and weak modes in one cycle of the low frequency oscillation in the maximum pressure history, and the pressure amplitude of low frequency was much larger than the others. The pressure peak appeared after weak mode, and the stable, periodical unstable and weak modes were sequentially observed with pressure decay. A series of simulations of spinning detonations clarified that the unsteady mechanism behind the shock front depending on the activation energy.

  • Th effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of combustion exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption(SFC) are experimentally investigated by four-cylin-der four-cycle and direct injection marine diesel engine. In order to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines a novel diesel soot removal system with a cylinder-type scrubber which has water injector(4 nozzles in 1.0mm diameter)is specially designed and manufactured for the experi-mental system. The obtained results are as follows; The combustion pressure in cylinder is decreased and ignition is delayed with increasing EGR rate. The accumulated quantity of heat release is slightly decreased and the tendency of heat release rate is not constant. NOx and Soot emissions are decreased by maximum 7% and 540% with scrubber tan without scrubber in the range of experimental conditions. Those are increased at the lean burn area with increasing equivalence ration in the constant value of engine speed and EGR rate. Also those are decreased with increasing EGR rate in the constant value of engine speed and equivalence ratio.

  • A study on the performance of a Diesel engine with various intake gas compositions other than that of air are performed experimentally. In this study, the concentrations of each of oxygen, nitorgen, carbon dioxide, and argon are changed and their effects on the performance of the engine are investigated parametrically. The experiments are performed at constant engine speed condition, and main measured parameters are cylinder pressure, intake gas compositions, fuel consumption rate. Increase of oxygen concentration up to 24% improved the performance of the engine generally. The adverse effect was observed when the oxygen concentration was increased over 24%. Increase of carbon dioxide concentration degraded the performance of the engine, mainly due to the lower specific heat ratio of carbon dioxide. Adding argon gas to the intake gas improved the overall performance. Finally, it is found that two most influencing factors affecting the performance of the Diesel engine in this study of intake gas composition variation are ignition delay and specific heat ratio of the intake gas.

  • The effects of equivalence ratio and pressure on burnt gas temperature in premixed fuel rich propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion are investigated over the wide ranges of equivalence ration from 1.5 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 7 MPa by using a specially designed disk -type constant-voume combustion chamber, The premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of combustion chamber with 45 degree interals. The eight converging flames compress the end gases to high pressures. The burnt gas temperature is meausured by the nmodifie dtow-colr pyrometry method. The transmissivity in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the hightest pressure is meausred by in situ laser extinction method. It is found that a temperature difference between the burnt gas temperature measured by mofidied and conventrational two-color method is 10 to 20 K, but the accuracy of the modified two-color methdo is higher if the local transmissivity in observed region is uniform , and the combustion at higher pressures results gas density conditions and the burnt gas temperature increases as the volume fraction of argon is increased because the specific heat of argon is lower compared to that of nitrogen with a constant equivalence ratio.

  • Spontaneous ignition tests of five different coals with non-iso-thermal and iso-thermal test method based on the standard test procedure of NF T20-036 were carried. These five coals included the 2 low rank coals and 3 bituminous coals. Test results showed that the ignition temperatures of all coals at the iso-thermal conditions were higher than that of non-isothermal condition, and those of low rank SM and BR coal in both nonisothermal and isothermal conditions were lower than bituminous AN and CN coals. The chemical species of coals such as oxygen and hematite also plays an important role in enhancing the ignition rate that the ignition temperature of SM coal was lowered. The heat accumulation tendency of five coals inside outdoor stack pile was monitored with emphasis on the change in the temperature of the coal depth in stack pile. In case of low rank BR coal, its temperature inside coal stack pile due to the rate of high heat accumulation and oxidation was $59^{\circ}C$ compared to $51^{\circ}C$ for other SW bituminous coal. And the heat accumulation rate inside coal stack piles was increased with increased the Cp value which it was defined as the specific heat of coal at constant pressure, whereas other factors such as thermal diffusivity and conductivity of coal relatively had less effect on heat accumulation.

  • This study was executed to find the applicability of press drying of tree disk by investigating the shrinkage and drying defect and to form appropriate model by comparing the actual moisture content(MC) and internal temperature in respect of drying time with calculated values based computer simulation to which was applied finite difference method. In press drying disk, heating period, constant drying rate period maintained plateau temperature at 100$^{\circ}C$ and falling drying rate period were significantly distinguished. Actual MC and internal temperature were analogous to those calculated at comparing points. Heat transfer model formed by Fourier's law using specific heat of moist wood and conduction coefficient considering fractional volume of each element of wood cell wall, bound water, free water and air showed applicability as basic data to developing heat expansion, shrinkage and drying stress during press drying. Also mass transfer model formed by Fick's diffusion law using water vapor diffusion coefficient showed applicability. Longitudinal shrinkage was developed by pressure of hot press and tangential shrinkage was restrained by hygrothermal recovery. The heart check, surface check and ring failure were occurred differently in species, but V-shaped crack didn't develop.

  • When the stagnation temperature of a perfect gas increases, the specific heat for constant pressure and ratio of the specefic heats do not remain constant any more and start to vary with this temperature. The gas remains perfect: its state equation remains always valid, with exception that it will be named by calorically imperfect gas. The aim of this research is to develop the relations of the necessary thermodynamics and geometrical ratios. and to study the supersonic flow at high temperature. lower than the threshold of dissociation. The results are found by the resolution of nonlinear algebraic equations and integration of complex analytical functions where the exact calculation is impossible. The dichotomy method is used to solve the nonlinear equation. and the Simpson algorithm for the numerical integration of the found integrals. A condensation of the nodes is used. Since. the functions to be integrated have a high gradient at the extremity of the interval of integration. The comparison is made with the calorifcally perfect gas to determine the error made by this last. The application is made for the air in a supersonic nozzle.

  • The aim of this work is to develop a new computational program to determine the effect of using the gas of propulsion of combustion chamber at high temperature on the shape of the two-dimensional Minimum Length Nozzle giving a uniform and parallel flow at the exit section using the method of characteristics. The selected gases are $H_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, CO, $CO_2$, $H_2O$, $NH_3$, $CH_4$ and air. All design parameters depend on the stagnation temperature, the exit Mach number and the used gas. The specific heat at constant pressure varies with the temperature and the selected gas. The gas is still considered as perfect. It is calorically imperfect and thermally perfect below the threshold of dissociation of molecules. A error calculation between the parameters of different gases with air is done in this case for purposes of comparison. Endless forms of nozzles may be found based on the choise of $T_0$, $M_E$ and the selected gas. For nozzles delivering same exit Mach number with the same stagnation temperature, we can choose the right gas for aerospace manufacturing rockets, missiles and supersonic aircraft and for supersonic blowers as needed in settings conception.

  • The effects of pressure and temperature on the autoignition of propane and n-butane blends were investigated using a rapid compression machine (RCM) , which is widely used to examine the autoignition characteristics. The RCM was designed to be capable of varying the compression ratio between 5 and 20 and minimize the vortex formation on the cylinder wall using a wedge-shaped crevice. The initial temperature and pressure of the compressed gas were varied in range of 720∼900 K and 1.6∼ 1.8 MPa, respectively, by adjusting the ratio of the specific heat of the mixture by altering the ratio of the non-reactive components (N$_2$, Ar) under a constant effective equivalence ratio (ø$\_$f/= 1.0) The gas temperature after the compression stroke could be obtained from the measured time-pressure record. The results showed a two-stage ignition delay and a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) behavior which were the unique characteristic of the alkane series fuels. As the propane concentration in the blend were increased from 20% and 40% propane, the autoignition delay time increased by approximately 41 % and 55% at 750 K. Numerical reduced kinetic modeling was performed using the Shell model, which introduced some important chemical ideas, represented by the generic species. Several rate coefficients were calibrated based on the experimental results to establish an autoignition model of the propane and n-butane blends. These coefficients can be used to predict the autoignition characteristics in LPG fueled Sl engines.
