  • Cultural method, dark field microscopy & fluorescent antibody technique were compared for their sensitivity of the detection of leptospires from experimentally infected mice. Two groups of mice were infected with L. icterohemorrhagiae (M20) and L. australis (Ballico), and the infected blood, urine and a number of organs were subjected to the bacterial isolation. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. L. icterohemorrhagiae (M20) and L. australis (Ballico) in blood, urine and various tissues of experimentally infected mice were detected with a negrigible non specificity, by the fluorescent antibody technique. 2. The fluorescent antibody technique, as applied to detection of leptospires in blood, urine and various infected tissue, proved to be better than cultural method and dark-field microscopy. 3. Early detection of leptospires by fluorescent antibody technique were possible in blood at 2 days after inoculation, whereas detection of organisms in liver, spleen, lung and kidney were observed later. By means of fluorescent antibody technique, the detection of leptospires in kidney and urine was possible up to 34 days postinoculation, whereas those in other parts were impossible. 4. Fluorescent antibody reaction of leptospires were highly specific to homologous antigen rather than to heterologous one. 5. Fluorescent antibody technique may be of value in the application for the demonstration of leptospira from clinical specimens.

  • Mathematical biology has been recognized its importance recently and widely studied in the fields of mathematics, biology, medical sciences, and immunology. Mathematical ecology is an academic field that studies how populations of biological species change as times flows at specific locations in their habitats. It was the earliest form of the research field of mathematical biology and has been providing its basis. This article deals with various form of interactions between two biological species in a common habitat. Mathematical models of predator-prey type, competitive type, and simbiotic type are investigated.

  • Spatial and timely information on crop and filed conditions is one of the most important basics for rational and efficient planning and management in agriculture. Remote sensing, GIS, and modeling are powerful tools for such applications. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art in remote sensing of crop and field conditions with some case studies. It is also shown that a synergistic linkage between process-based models and remote sensing signatures enables us to estimate the multiple crop/ecosystem variables at a dynamic mode. Remotely sensed information can greatly reduce the uncertainty of simulation models by compensating for insufficient availability of data or parameters. This synergistic approach allows the effective use of infrequent and multi-source remote sensing data for estimating important ecosystem variables such as biomass growth and ecosystem $CO_2$ flux. This paper also shows a geo-spatial information system that enables us to integrate, search, extract, process, transform, and calculate any part of the data based on ID#, attributes, and/or by river-basin boundary, administrative boundary, or boundaries of arbitrary shape/size all over Japan. A case study using the system demonstrates that the nitrogen load from fertilizer was closely related to nitrate concentration of groundwater. The combined use of remote sensing, GIS and modeling would have great potential for various agro-ecosystem applications.

  • The recent advances in the field of augmented reality (AR) have shown that the technology is a fundamental part of modern immersive interactive systems for the achievement of user engagement and a dynamic user experience. This survey paper presents the descriptions of a variety of the new AR explorations, and the issues that are relevant to the contemporary development of the fundamental technologies and applications are discussed. Most of the literature regarding the pertinent topics-taxonomy, the core tracking and sensing technologies, the hardware and software platforms, and the domain-specific applications-are then chronologically surveyed, and in varying detail, this is supplemented with the cited papers. This paper portrays the diversity of the research regarding the AR field together with an overview of the benefits and the limitations of the competing and complementary technologies.

  • This paper proposes an efficient fault detection method for onboard degaussing coils which are installed to minimize underwater magnetic fields due to the ferromagnetic hull. To achieve this, the method basically uses field signals measured at specific magnetic treatment facilities instead of time-consuming numerical field solutions in a three-dimensional analysis space. In addition, an analytical design sensitivity formula and the linear property of degaussing coil fields is being exploited for detecting fault coil positions and assessing individual degaussing coil currents. Such peculiar features make it possible to yield fast and accurate results on the fault detection of degaussing coils. For foreseeable fault conditions, the proposed method is tested with a model ship equipped with 20 degaussing coils.

  • Nowadays, social circumstances have changed rapidly due to the decreasing birthrate and increasing number of senior citizens. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate past research for presenting the direction of future research and for improvement of welfare for the elderly. For this study a total of 231 articles within four kinds of major home economics journals are used. The articles were published from 2000 to 2007. Specific research topics (subjects) are investigated for this study. Results from this study are as follows. Research topics are divided into the following fields: facilities for the elderly, family relationships in later life, quality of life, economical aspects of the elderly, physical and metal health, leisure, awareness and the attitudes about elderly people, clothing, death and welfare services for elders. According to this study, 'facilities for the elderly' and 'relationships in later life' are the most frequent topics of interest. Based on the results of this research and the governmental aging society plan, SEROMAZI PLAN 2010, the directions of future research about senior citizens and later life in our home economics major science field are presented.

  • A moving coil linear oscillatory actuator is consisted of the NdFeB permanent magnets with high specific energy as the stator, a coil-wrapped nonmagnetic hollow rectangular structure and an iron core as a pathway for magnetic flux. The variation of mover position and the consequent changes of coil flux path affect the coil inductance, because coil flux leaks at the open region of LOA stator. The interaction between permanent magnet and armature field is to shift the airgap flux density variation due to the magnet alone by a certain amount. The unbalanced reciprocation force due to armature reaction field decreases the advantage of moving coil LOA, such as a high degree of linearity and controllability in the force ad motion control. This paper firstly describes the coil inductance, the deviation of flux density, and the unbalanced reciprocation force, which are derived form the permeance model of LOA. Secondly, the analytical method are verified using the 2D finite element method and tests. Finally, the dynamic simulation algorithm taking the armature reaction effect and variable inductance into account, is proposed and confirmed through the experiment.

  • Korean civil and environmental organizations had selected and announced ‘The top ten pieces of news in the environmental field of the year’ on Dec. 2, 1999. This study investigated the possibilities that these could be used as subject matters of environmental curriculum and infused into the environmental textbook of secondary schools, referring to documents and internet materials. The top ten pieces of environmental news could be clarified as controversial topics. The locality was analyzed that 2 pieces occurred mainly in a specific area, 4 pieces in several areas and 4 pieces around all over the country. Most of them had the opposing partners as the federal and local governmental vs. civil organizations and people. Each of them could be used as subject matters for 7 to 13 contents domains of the 6th and 7th Korean environmental curriculum. The knowledge of most of them had related counterpart concepts to be infused into the ‘Environmental Science’textbook for the high school students. The results suggested that more concerns and efforts are needed to deal and use these controversial issues as real world problems of Korea in the environmental education practices

  • Monoclonal antibody (mAb)-based enzyme immune-slide assay (EISA) was used for the detection of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus from field samples collected from a natural outbreak. The clinicopathological study was undertaken to diagnose the case primarily of PPR. Antigen was detected from discharges and faeces of infected goats and swabs of postmortem lesions prepared on glass slide or glass plate using acetone fixation. Nasal discharge collected at the early stage of disease course or lung is an appropriate ante- or postmortem sample for this technique, respectively. Convalescent polyclonal sera collected from recovered animals which were diagnosed as PPR by EISA showed high antibody titer against PPR by C-ELISA, demonstrating the satisfactory specificity of the test. Therefore, EISA is a sensitive and specific assay to confirm PPR infection both in field and laboratory conditions and especially suitable for developing country.
