Mechanism of lignin biodegradation caused by basidiomycetes and the history of lignin biodegradation studies were briefly reviewed. The important roles of fungal extracellular ligninolytic enzymes such as lignin and manganese peroxidases (LiP and MnP) were also summarized. These enzymes were unique in their catalytic mechanisms and substrate specificities. Either LiP or MnP system is capable of oxidizing a variety of aromatic substrates via a one-electron oxidation. Extracellular fungal system for aromatic degradation is non-specific, which recently attracts many people working a bioremediation field. On the other hand, an intracellular degradation system for aromatic compounds is rather specific in the fungal cell. Structurally similar compounds were prepared and metabolized, indicating that an intracellular degradation strategy consisted of the cellular systems for substrate recognition and metabolic response. It was assumed that lignin-degrading fungi might be needed to develop multiple metabolic pathways for a variety of aromatic compounds caused by the action of non-specific ligninolytic enzymes on lignin. Our recent results on chemical stress responsible factors analyzed using mRNA differential display techniques were also mentioned.
In accordance with the development of EEG and polysomnography in the field of sleep research, the sleep onset period (SOP) between wakefulness and sleep has been considered an important part for understanding the physiology of sleep. SOP in the transition from wakefulness to sleep is a gradual process integrating various viewpoints such as behavior, EEG, physiology and subjective report. Particularly, based on understanding of EEG changes during sleep, SOP has been regarded as a pattern of topographical change in specific frequency and specific state in EEG. Studies on quantitative EEG (qEEG) and event-related potential (ERP) have suggested that SOP shows the changes of functional coordination at the specific cortical areas in qEEG and the changes of regular patterns in response to environmental stimulation in ERP. The development of sleep EEG and topographic mapping of EEG is expected to integrate various viewpoints of SOP and clarify the neurophysiologic mechanism of SOP further.

This study was carried out to develop an engine for off-road vehicles especially for farm tractors using the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which is known as a source of energy having good potential of substitute fuel for diesel engine because of its economical advantage and low pollutant materials after combustion. The study was focused on develop an engine of high in specific power output, low in specific fuel consumption and emission of pollutants. A series of teat was dope on the engine - various laboratory tests to analyze performance of the engine and actual field tests with the engine installed on a farm tractor as a power source.
This paper is for a reasonable selection of design response spectra for the seismic design of specific types of soil-structure interaction systems, e.g., underground structure within flexible soil profiles of structures on the shallow soil layers on the stiff bed rock. the existing backup data used for determining the design response spectra of the Code have been investigated and evaluated. For this purpose, various types of free field analyses have been performed using one-dimensional wave propagation theory considering the nonlinear properties of the soil profile. As a result, a reasonable approach of determining input response spectra for specific soil profiles has been proposed to be compatible to the design response spectra of the Code.
Site-specific atmospheric dispersion characteristics have been analyzed. The northwest and the southwest wind prevail on nuclear sites of Korea. The annual isobaric surface averaged for twenty years around Korean peninsula shows that west wind prevails. The prevailing west wind is profitable in the viewpoint of radiation protection because three of four nuclear sites are located in the east side. Large scale field tracer experiments over nuclear sites have been conducted for the purpose of analyzing the atmospheric dispersion characteristics and validating a real-time atmospheric dispersion and dose assessment system FADAS. To analyze the site-specific atmospheric dispersion characteristics is essential for making effective countermeasures against a nuclear emergency.
In this research, we report the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous graphene aerogels (hpGAs) for application to electrochemical energy storage. For electrochemical systems, the specific capacitance is a key parameter to evaluate the characteristics of electrode materials. By taking full advantage of large surface area, 3D hpGAs would achieve the larger specific capacitance over rGO film and GAs. Microscopic structures and topologies of hpGAs were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to determine the chemical compositions of rGO film, GAs, and hpGAs. Raman spectra were recorded from 100 to 2500 cm-1 at room temperature using a Raman spectroscopy equipped with a ${\times}100$ objective was used. The specific area and pore distribution of GAs and hpGAs were obtained using a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller apparatus.
Many important horticultural and field crops are susceptible to virus infections or may possess a degree of resistance to some viruses, but become infected by others. Plant viruses enter cells through the presence of wounds, and replicate intracellularly small genomes that encode genes required for replication, cell-to-cell movement and encapsidation. There are numerous evidences from specific virus-host interactions to require the involvement of host factors and steps during viral replication cycle. However, viruses should deal with host defense responses either by general or specific mechanisms, targeting viral components or genome itself. On the other hand, the host plants have also adapted to defend themselves against viral attack by operating different lines of resistance responses. The defense-related interactions provide new insights into the complex molecular strategies for hosts for defense and counter-defense employed by viruses.
This paper deals with the experimental validation of the use of PVDF Patches for the assessment of spatial derivatives of displacement field. It focuses more exactly on the shear Force Identification by using Specific forms of PVDF patcHes (FISH) on beams. An overview of the theoretical approach is exposed. The principle is based on the use of the weak form of the equation of motion of the beam which allows the shear forces to be extracted at one edge of the sensor when this last has a specific form. The experimental validation is carried out with a cantilever steel beam, excited by a shaker at its free boundary. The validation consists in comparing the shear force measured by the designed sensor glued at the free edge and the directly measured force applied by the shaker. The sensor is made of two patches, called the "stiffness" patch and the "mass" patch. The use of both patches allows one to identify correctly the shear force on a large frequency domain. The use of only the stiffness patch is valid in the low frequency domain and has the advantage to have a frequency-independent gain that allows its use in real time.
The band-gap opening in graphene is a key factor in developing graphene-based field effect transistors. Although graphene is a gapless semimetal, a band-gap opens when graphene is formed into a graphene nanoribbon (GNR). Moreover, the band-gap energy can be manipulated by the width of the GNR. In this study, we propose a site-specific synthesis of a width-tailored GNR directly onto an insulating substrate. Predeposition of a diamond-like carbon nanotemplate onto a SiO2/Si wafer via focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition is first utilized for growth of the GNR. These results may present a feasible route for growing a width-tailored GNR onto a specific region of an insulating substrate.
