  • A new species, Venturia tenuiabdominalis Choi sp. nov., belonging to the subfamily Campopleginae, family Ichneumonidae, is described in South Korea. The subfamily Campopleginae was recorded by Forster in 1869 based on genus Campoplex and more than 2,100 described species into 66 genera have been reported worldwide. Among the 66 genera of Campopleginae, the genus Venturia is one of the large groups, which is more than 140 species worldwide (Yu et al., 2016; Vas, 2019a; 2019b; Vas, 2020; Vas and Di Giovanni, 2020; Han et al., 2021). A taxonomic study of South Korean Venturia was initiated by Choi et al. (2012), who reported Venturia longipropodeum (Uchida, 1942). A key to species of South Korean Venturia, description of new species and diagnostic illustrations are provided.

  • A preliminary study on species composition of a Korean purse seine catch landed at cannery was conducted in April 2011. In the cannery, all tuna catch are sliding through a sorting grid panel that filters and drops fish in the buckets by size class (above 9kg, 3.4-9kg, 1.8-3.4kg, 1.4-1.8kg and below 1.4kg). In cannery processing, species sorting was made for skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna only from catches greater than 3.4kg during filtering but not for bigeye tuna because of difficulties in species identification between bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna under frozen state. As no species identification was carried out for catch groups less than 3.4kg in the cannery process, this study focused on sorting out skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna from these groups and then identifying bigeye tuna from all size groups of yellowfin tuna. Using the mixture rate of species obtained from the samples taken, species composition of the landed catch was estimated. As results, cannery research showed 95% for skipjack tuna, 3% for yellowfin tuna and 2% for bigeye tuna in species composition, while vessel logbook data represented 96%, 3% and 1% for skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna, respectively. The proportion of bigeye tuna identified in the cannery was slightly higher than shown in logbook data by 1%.

육지와의 최단거리 평균은 14.9km(150m∼51.4km)이었다.

  • Oncaea venusta Philippi, 1843 has been known as having some different size groups, but recent genetic study for cyt b and ITS 1 (Elvers et al. 2006) suggests that these size groups can be considered as different species. Of these size groups, the largest O. venusta Philippi and the smallest O. venella Farran, 1929 were first described in Korean waters. The latter is easily distinguishable from the former in the following characteristics in addition to its small size: (1) length to width ratio of genital double somite of two genders smaller, and (2) female second pediger bearing inconspicuous dorso-posterior swelling. Oncaea venusta and O. venella co-occur in Korean waters during spring to fall, but their occurrence patterns seasonally differ: the former shows higher density in fall while the latter does in summer.

  • Orthologs are genes having the same function across different species that specialize from a single gene in the last common ancestor of these species. Orthologous groups are useful in the genome annotation, studies on gene evolution, and comparative genomics. However, the construction of an orthologous group is difficult to automate and it takes so much time. It is also hard to guarantee the accuracy of the constructed orthologous groups. We propose a system to construct orthologous groups on many genomes automatically and rapidly. We utilize the grid computing to reduce the sequence alignment time, and we use clustering algorithm in the application of database to automate whole processes. We have generated orthologous groups for 20 complete prokaryotes genomes just in a day because of the grid computing. Furthermore, new genomes can be accommodated easily by the clustering algorithm and grid computing. We compared the generated orthologous groups with COGs (Clusters of orthologous Group of proteins) and KO (KEGG Ortholog). The comparison shows about 85 percent similarity compared with previous well-known orthologous databases.

  • The clonal seaweed Chondrus crispus (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales) forms extensive stands at low intertidal elevations on wave-sheltered rocky shores of the North Atlantic. This study investigates if this bushy alga acts as a foundation species in such habitats. The abundance (percent cover) of C. crispus, all other algae, and invertebrates was measured in 390 quadrats spanning 350 km of coast in Nova Scotia, Canada. In these low-intertidal habitats, fucoid algae are the largest organisms and can form extensive canopies, but their cover was unrelated to benthic species richness and to C. crispus cover. Species richness, however, increased with C. crispus cover from low to intermediate cover values, showing little change towards full C. crispus cover. Species composition (a combined measure of species identity and their relative abundance) differed between quadrats with low (0-1%) and high (60-100%) cover of C. crispus. High C. crispus cover was associated to more invertebrate species but fewer algal species than low C. crispus cover. However, the average abundance of algal and invertebrate species occurring in both cover groups was often higher under high C. crispus cover, contributing to a higher average richness at the quadrat scale. Overall, only 16% of the observed variation in species richness was explained by C. crispus cover. Therefore, this study suggests that C. crispus acts as a foundation species but with a moderate influence.

  • Larva and pupae of Prosimulium kiotoense and larvae of Twinnia japonensis were collected and reported from Korea for the first time. The genus Prosimulium, previously unknown from Korea, contains 80 species worldwide and 8 species are known in Japan. Species are separated into 3 species groups; hirtipes species-group (47 spp.), macropyga species-group (14 spp.) and magnum species-group (19 spp.), with which P. kiotoense belongs to the hirtipes species-group. The genus Twinnia, also previously unknown from Korea, contains only 10 species worldwide. In this study, I provide detailed descriptions and photographs of larvae and pupae P. kiotoense and larvae T. japonensis. Prosimulium kiotoense is characterized by pupa with gill of 16 filaments, cocoon amorphous and entirely covers the pupal body, head and thorax densely covered with microtubercles, larva with postgenal cleft apically straight, and hypostomal teeth with median tooth prominent. On the other hand, larva of T. japonensis can be characterized by labral fan absent, gill histoblast with 16 filaments, and hypostomal teeth with median tooth distinctly shorter than other teeth. In addition to descriptions for each species, a key to Korean Prosimulium and Twinnia is provided, with reference to the Japanese species and habitat information.

  • In order to elucidate the mechanisms affecting plant distributions in the reclaimed dredging area in the Gwangyang steelworks, in the Gwangyang Bay, Korea, we examined soil characteristics and plant distributions in four study sites and a control site in the study area. Desalination occurring along a gradient with increasing elevation, resulting in decrease of soil pH, EC, P, K, Cl, Ca, Mg, and salt and an increase in soil T-N, silt, clay contents. From site 1 (the lowest-elevation site) to site 5 (the highest-elevation site), halophytes decreased in abundance and nonhalophytes increased. The dominant species in each site were: Phragmites communis, Limonium tetragonum, and 12 additional species at site 1, Carex pumila, Suaeda japonica, and 15 additional species at site 2, Spergularia marina, Scirpus planiculmis, and 22 additional species at site 3, Miscantus sinensis, Lespedeza bicolor, and 26 additional species at site 4 and Pinus thunberii, Rhododendron mucronulatum, and 39 additional species at site 5, which resembled a naturally-occurring P. thinbergii community. Cluster analysis of the vegetation data matrix grouped the 35 plots into 5 major groups, and cluster analysis using the soil environment data matrix revealed 4 major groups. CCA of the floristic and environmental data matrix showed a positive relationship of SAR, EC, Na, Cl, and Ca, which are related to salt, in the $1^{st}$ axis and $2^{nd}$ axis, but negative relationships for altitude, organic contents, silt, and clay contents. Notably, plant species in the reclaimed dredging area that were separated along the $1^{st}$ axis showed strong relationships with factors that related to salt. Long-term exposure to natural rainfall in the reclaimed dredging area changed the soil characteristics, such as salinity. This change in soil characteristics might alter the SAR, which affects plant survival strategies in a given habitat. These results strongly indicated that factors related to salt and elevation play important roles in determining the overall plant distribution in the reclaimed dredging area.

  • This study was conducted to understand the distribution and changes of macrobenthos on rocky intertidal areas around Taean thermoelectric power plant, Also, the purpose of this study was to produce a base-line data on the changes in water temperature due to the operation of the power plant and to understand its thermal impact on the macrobenthic community on intertidal rocky bottoms. A field survey was seasonally conducted at 3 rocky intertidal sites around the Taean thermal power plant. There was no seasonal difference in the community parameters such as number of species, mean density, biomass and species diversity during the study period. The major dominant species were Chthamalus challenger, Littorina brevicula, Crassostrea gigas. In comparison with previous study, thermal discharge in the study area did not significantly affect the distribution of dominant species. The structure of the macrobenthic community revealed that there were showed 3 different faunal groups depending on the difference in the mean density of major dominant species. The result of SIMPER analyses to determine which species were the main contributors to the differences between each community, C. challenger, Lottia spp. And Mytilus galloprovincialis, etc., revealed that there was showed a significant difference between each group. The abundance of M. galloprovincialis, showed a significant difference between faunal groups.
