Bi-fuel system in a spark ignition engine (SIE) is a rising phenomena in today's automobile technology. In a gasoline driven vehicle, alternatively adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) could be used as a potential substitute to meet the energy requirement and this is possible by some minor changes in the hardware of the existing engine. Gasoline engine is widely used in the passenger cars, light, medium and heavy duty vehicles but the consumption status of the petroleum is decreasing worldwide and at the same time environmental pollution from automobiles is seriously establishes as a threat for every nation in respect to global warming and climate changes. Now-a-days most vehicles operate using CNG for its popularity stems, clean burning properties and cost effective solution compared to other alternative fuels. It refers as a good gaseous fuel because of its high octane number and self ignition temperature. Though the power output is slightly lesser than the gasoline fuel; its thermal efficiency is better than the gasoline for the same SIE. The research paper highlights the reduction of CO, reasonable outcomes of HC emissions with minor increase in $NO_x$ emissions compared with the gasoline fuel to bi-fuel mode in the SIE that meets the emission challenges.

The objective of this study is to develope knock control algorithms which can increase engine power without causing frequent knock occurrence. A four cylinder spark-ignition engine is used for the experiments to develop knock control algorithms which use block vibration signals. Knock occurrence is detected accurately by using knock threshold values which consider the difference of transmission path of each cylinder. Spark timing is controlled both simultaneously and individually. With the simultaneous control, torque gain is achieved by retarding the spark timing on knock occurrence in propotion to the knock intensity. The individual knock control algorithm results in higher torque gain than the simultaneous knock control algorithm. The knock occurrence frequency of the individual knock control algorithm is about twice the value of the simultaneous knock control algorithm results. Both control algorithms give similar torque gain of about 3% when they are optimized.

Time-resolved current and voltage measurements for an inductive automotive spark system were made. Also presented are measurements of the total energy delivered to the spark gap. The measurements were made in air for a range of pressures from 1-18atm, at ambient temperatures. The measured voltage and current characteristics were found to be a function of many ignition parameters; some of these include: spark gap distance, internal resistance of the spark plug and high tension wire, and pressure. The voltages presented were measured either at the top of the spark plug or at the spark gap. The measurements were made at different time resolutions to more accurately resolve the voltage and current behavior throughout the discharge process. This was necessary because the breakdown event occurs on a time scale much shorter than the arc and glow phases. The breakdown, are, and glow voltages were found to be functions of spark plug resistance, gas density, and spark plug gap as expected from the literature. Spark duration was found to decrease as either pressure or gap was increased. The transition from the arc to glow phase is usually distinguished by a sudden rise in the voltage across the gap. At pressures above about 7atm this transition was not observed suggesting that a glow phase was not present. Energy delivered to the gap increased with increasing pressure. The effective resistance of the spark gap during discharge was about twice as large for the glow phase as the arc phase.

The computer program which predicts the gas exchange process of multi-cylinder 4-Stroke cycle spark-ignition engine, can be great assistance for the design and development of new engine. In this study, the computer program was developed to predict the gas exchange process of multi-cylinder four stroke cycle spark ignition engine including intake and exhaust systems. When gas exchange process is to be calculated, the evaluation of the variation of the thermo-dynamic properties with time and position in the intake and exhaust systems is required. For the purpose, the application of the generalized method of characteristics to the gas exchange process is known as one of the method. The simulation model developed was investigated to the analysis of the branch system of multi-cylinder. The models used were the 2-zone expansion model and single zone model for in cylinder calculation and the generalized method of characteristic including area change, friction, heat transfer and entropy gradients for pipe flow calculation. The empirical constants reduced to least number as possible were determined through the comparison with the experimented indicator diagram of one particular operation condition and these constants were applied to other operating condition. The predicted pressures in cylinder were compared with the experimental results over the wide range of equivalence ratio and ignition timing. The predicted values have shown good agreement with the experimental results. The thermodynamic properties in the intake and exhaust system were predicted over the wide range of equivalence ratio and ignition timing. The obtained results can be summarized as follows. 1. Pressures in the exhaust manifold have a little influence on the equivalence ratio, a great influence on the ignition timing. 2. Pressures in the inlet manifold are nearly unchanged by the equivalence ratio and the ignition timing. 3. In this study, the behaviors of the exhaust temperature, gas in the exhaust manifold were ascertained.

A constant volume combustion chamber is employed to investigate the initial flame kernel development and flame propagation of gasoline-air mixtures with various ignition systems, ignition energy and spark plug electrodes. To do this research, four ignition systems are designed and manufactured, and the ignition energy is controlled by varying the dwell time. Several kinds of spark plugs are also made to analyze the effects of electrodes on flame kernel development. The velocity of flame propagation is measured by the laser deflection method. The output laser beam from He-Ne laser is divided into three parallel beams by a beam splitter. The splitted beams pass through the combustion chamber. They are deflected when contacted with flame front, and the voltage signals from photodiodes change due to deflection. The results show that higher ignition energy raises the flame propagation speed especially under the fuel lean operation. The wider electrode gap, smaller electrode diameter and sharper electrode tip make the speed of the initial flame propagation faster. The speed of the initial flame propagation is affected by electrode material as well. Electrode material with lower melting temperature help the initial flame propagation.

An LPG engine for heavy-duty vehicles has been developed using liquid phase LPG injection (hereafter LPLi) system which has regarded as one of the next generation LPG fuel supply systems. In this wort to investigate the lean bum characteristics of heavy-duty LPLi engine, various injection timing (SOI, start of injection) and double ignition method were tested. The results showed that lean misfire limit of LPLi engine could be extended. by 0.2 $\lambda$ value, using the optimal SOI timing in LPLi system. Double ignition method test was carried out by installing the second spark plug and modified ignition circuit to ignite two spark plugs simultaneously. Double ignition resulted in the stable combustion under ultra lean bum condition, below $\lambda=1.7$, and extension of lean misfire limit compare to ordinary case. Therefore, LPLi engine with optimal SOI and double ignition method could be normally operated at around $\lambda=1.9$ and showed higher engine performance.
The paper presents some details of the CFD modeling of a novel design where jet ignition devices replace the traditional spark plugs for a faster and more complete combustion. The numerical simulations show how the pre-chamber jet ignition in a Wankel engine differs from reciprocating piston engine applications. The jets issuing from the jet ignition pre-chamber have many different speeds in the different directions as the pressure build-up at the trailing edge of the rotating chamber makes extremely fast the ignition of the chamber mixture in the direction of rotation. Conversely it prevents the jet ignition in the opposite direction. Careful positioning along the periphery and design of the connecting pipes and the prechamber volume with the help of CFD simulations permits to achieve extremely fast and complete combustion as impossible with spark plugs. The paper proposes results of CFD simulations of the combustion evolution within a jet ignited Wankel engine rotor, detailing challenges and opportunities of the application, as well as a first assessment of the impact the faster and more complete combustion permitted by jet ignition may have on the performances of Wankel engines for unmanned aerial vehicles applications.
Five different size of orifice were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The initial flame development and flame propagation were analyzed by the mass burned fraction and combustion enhancement rate. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass burned fractions and the combustion enhancement rates. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by the shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burned fraction were increased when using the torch-ignition device. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage.

The objective of this study is to determine the ignition feasibility of a single shot, air-assisted gasoline fuel injector operated in a constant volume combustion chamber under atmospheric condition. A number of parameters has been selected for this experiments, such as dwelling time, spark gap position(r,z), spark electrode geometry, supplied air and fuel masses and spray cone deflector angle. On-site visual inspection of the instantaneous flame glow was chosen as one way to judge the successful ignition. In addition, chamber pressure and occasional photography were mobilized as for data recording. It was clearly observed that there was an entrainment air-fuel mixture toward spray axis from the spray formation and its development later on. The optimum ignition conditions were found for those parameters given above.

The analysis shows that the variation of maximum pressure of the cycle, rate of hear release, rate of mass burned, and combustion delay are influenced by the inlet air humidity in the spark-ignition engine. The quantitative combustion delay can be obtained from the rate of mass burned. Also, the variation of time loss and effective compression ratio with the change of inlet air humidity are dominated by the development of rate of heat release.
