A Search for Exoplanets around Northern Circumpolar Stars. VII. Detection of Planetary Companion Orbiting the Largest Host Star HD 18438

  • We have been conducting a exoplanet search survey using Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) for the last 18 years. We present the detection of exoplanet candidate in orbit around HD 18438 from high-precision radial velocity (RV) mesurements. The target was already reported in 2018 (Bang et al. 2018). They conclude that the RV variations with a period of 719 days are likely to be caused by the pulsations because the Lomb-Scargle periodogram of HIPPARCOS photometric and Hα EW variations for HD 18438 show peaks with periods close to that of RV variations and there were no correlations between bisectors and RV measurements. However, the data were not sufficient to reach a firm conclusion. We obtained more RV data for four years. The longer time baseline yields a more accurate determination with a revised period of 803 ± 5 days and the planetary origin of RV variations with a minimum planetary companion mass of 21 ± 1 MJup. Our current estimate of the stellar parameters for HD 18438 makes it currently the largest star with a planetary companion.

A Signal Detection of Minimum Variance Algorithm on Linear Constraints

  • We propose a method for removing interference and noise to estimate target information. In wireless channels, information signals are subject to interference and noise, making it is difficult to accurately estimate the desired signal. To estimate the desired information signal, it is essential to remove the noise and interference from the received signal, extracting only the desired signal. If the received signal noise and interference are not removed, the estimated information signal will have a large error in distance and direction, and the exact location of the target cannot be estimated. This study aims to accurately estimate the desired target in space. The objective is to achieve more presice target estimation than existing methods and enhance target resolution.An estimation method is proposed to improve the accuracy of target estimation. The proposed target estimation method obtains optimal weights using linear constraints and the minimum variance method. Through simulation, the performance of the proposed method and the existing method is analyzed. The proposed method successfully estimated all four targets, while the existing method only estimated two targets. The results show that the proposed method has better resolutiopn and superior estimation capability than the existing method.

  • In this paper, an algorithm to calculate both bearing and distance error for target detection and localization is proposed using the Cramer Rao lower bound to estimate the minium variance of their error in DOA (Direction Of Arrival) estimation. The performance of arrays in detection and localization depends on the accuracy of DOA, which is affected by a variation of SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). The SNR is determined by sonar parameters such as a SL (Source Level), TL (Transmission Loss), NL (Noise Level), array shape and beam steering angle. For verification of the suggested method, a Monte Carlo simulation was performed to probabilistically calculate the bearing and distance error according to the SNR which varies with the relative position of the target in space and noise level.

  • In the modern UAV systems, the role of radar payload has been increasing with its unique performance of day-and-night operation and see-through capability over hidden obstacles. Contrary to the satellite reconnaissance, UAV is expected to provide high resolution target detection and recognition capability while frequent flight missions would deliver enhanced SAR image and local information over the target area. STK(Satellite Tool Kit) is a professional space-analysis software widely used in all phases of a space system's life cycle. The simulation of STK is efficient and accurate relatively. In this paper, the author attempt to model the UAV operation and measure the expected SAR image quality. STK(Satellite Tool Kit) is employed to analyze UAV operation and produce SAR raw data. A SAR simulator is developed to produce high resolution SAR image for various ground targets.

  • The pilot study of SLGT (Superconducting Low-frequency Gravitational-wave Telescope) is being performed by KKN (KASI-KISTI-NIMS) collaboration. In this presentation, we discuss prospectives of detecting GWs in the low-frequency band (0.1-10 Hz), which is a target frequency band of SLGT, but can be hardly observed by advanced LIGO. IMBHBs (Intermediate Mass Black Hole Binaries) and IMRIs (Intermediate Mass Ratio Inspirals) with total masses of O(1000) up to O(10,000) solar masses are most probable sources between 0.1-10 Hz. We estimate horizon distances and signal to noise ratios of IMBHBs and IMRIs for different SLGT design sensitivities. Based on our calculations, detection rates for IMBHBs and IMRIs with SLGT will be discussed.

  • In the East Sea of Korea, the ocean environments are known to have strong variations in space and time. Their effects are very important factors in sound propagation and sonar performance. We consider the environmental factors such as eddies and thermal fronts affecting underwater sound propagation and target detection performance by sonars. Unfortunately, however, the detailed structure of eddies is usually difficult to understand by using the sea surface temperatures from infrared images alone or a few profiles from the CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth) castings. The temperature fields of eddy and thermal front are simulated with typical patterns of those obtained from several observations. This paper delivers the overviews of environments and acoustic models with their simulation results on sonar performance.

  • Successful software attacks require both injecting malicious code into a program's address space and altering the program's flow control to the injected code. Code section can not be changed at program's runtime, so malicious code must be injected into data section. Detoured flow control into data section is a signal of software attack. We propose a new software attack detection method which verify the target address of CALL, JMP, RET instructions, which alter program's flow control, and detect a software attack when the address is not in code section. Proposed method can detect all change of flow control related data, not only program's return address but also function pointer, buffer of longjmp() function and old base pointer, so it can detect the more attacks.

  • For the first time in Korea, we are developing technology for gravitational wave (GW) detectors as a major R&D program. Our main research target is quantum noise reduction technology which can enhance the sensitivity of a GW detector beyond its limit by classical physics. Technology of generating squeezed vacuum state of light (SQZ) can suppress quantum noise (shot noise at higher frequencies and radiation pressure noise at lower frequencies) of laser interferometer type GW detectors. Squeezing technology has recently started being used for GW detectors and becoming necessary and key components. Our ultimate goal is to participate and make contribution to international collaborations for upgrade of existing GW detectors and construction of next generation GW detectors. This presentation will summarize our results in 2020 and plan for the upcoming years. Technical details will be presented in other family talks.

Moving Object Detection Using Sparse Approximation and Sparse Coding Migration

  • In order to meet the requirements of background change, illumination variation, moving shadow interference and high accuracy in object detection of moving camera, and strive for real-time and high efficiency, this paper presents an object detection algorithm based on sparse approximation recursion and sparse coding migration in subspace. First, low-rank sparse decomposition is used to reduce the dimension of the data. Combining with dictionary sparse representation, the computational model is established by the recursive formula of sparse approximation with the video sequences taken as subspace sets. And the moving object is calculated by the background difference method, which effectively reduces the computational complexity and running time. According to the idea of sparse coding migration, the above operations are carried out in the down-sampling space to further reduce the requirements of computational complexity and memory storage, and this will be adapt to multi-scale target objects and overcome the impact of large anomaly areas. Finally, experiments are carried out on VDAO datasets containing 59 sets of videos. The experimental results show that the algorithm can detect moving object effectively in the moving camera with uniform speed, not only in terms of low computational complexity but also in terms of low storage requirements, so that our proposed algorithm is suitable for detection systems with high real-time requirements.

Parallel Multi-task Cascade Convolution Neural Network Optimization Algorithm for Real-time Dynamic Face Recognition

  • Due to the angle of view, illumination and scene diversity, real-time dynamic face detection and recognition is no small difficulty in those unrestricted environments. In this study, we used the intrinsic correlation between detection and calibration, using a multi-task cascaded convolutional neural network(MTCNN) to improve the efficiency of face recognition, and the output of each core network is mapped in parallel to a compact Euclidean space, where distance represents the similarity of facial features, so that the target face can be identified as quickly as possible, without waiting for all network iteration calculations to complete the recognition results. And after the angle of the target face and the illumination change, the correlation between the recognition results can be well obtained. In the actual application scenario, we use a multi-camera real-time monitoring system to perform face matching and recognition using successive frames acquired from different angles. The effectiveness of the method was verified by several real-time monitoring experiments, and good results were obtained.
