  • Job Shop Problem which consists of the m different machines and n jobs is a NP-hard problem of the combinatorial optimization. Each job consists of a chain of operations, each of which needs to be processed during an uninterrupted time period of a given length on a given machine. Each machine can process at most one operation at a time. The purpose of this paper is to develop the heuristic method to solve large scale scheduling problem using Constraint Satisfaction Problem method and Simulated Annealing. The proposed heuristic method consists of the search algorithm and optimization algorithm. The search algorithm is to find the solution in the solution space using CSP concept such as backtracking and domain reduction. The optimization algorithm is to search the optimal solution using SA. This method is applied to MT06, MT10 and MT20 Job Shop Problem, and compared with other heuristic method.

  • The optimization problem of BDDs plays an improtant role in the area of logic synthesis and formal verification. Since the variable ordering has great impacts on the size and form of BDD, finding a good variable order is very important problem. In this paper, a new variable ordering scheme called incremental optimization algorithm is presented. The proposed algorithm reduces search space more than a half of that of the conventional sifting algorithm, and computing time has been greatly reduced withoug depreciating the performance. Moreover, the incremental optimization algorithm is very simple than other variable reordering algorithms including the sifting algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and the efficiency has been show using may benchmark circuits.

  • In this paper, we introduce an advanced architecture of K-Means clustering-based polynomial Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (p-RBFNNs) designed with the aid of SSOA (Space Search Optimization Algorithm) and develop a comprehensive design methodology supporting their construction. In order to design the optimized p-RBFNNs, a center value of each receptive field is determined by running the K-Means clustering algorithm and then the center value and the width of the corresponding receptive field are optimized through SSOA. The connections (weights) of the proposed p-RBFNNs are of functional character and are realized by considering three types of polynomials. In addition, a WLSE (Weighted Least Square Estimation) is used to estimate the coefficients of polynomials (serving as functional connections of the network) of each node from output node. Therefore, a local learning capability and an interpretability of the proposed model are improved. The proposed model is illustrated with the use of nonlinear function, NOx called Machine Learning dataset. A comparative analysis reveals that the proposed model exhibits higher accuracy and superb predictive capability in comparison to some previous models available in the literature.

  • The present work proposes a self-controlled multi-stage optimization method for damage identification of structures utilizing standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Damage identification problem is formulated as an inverse optimization problem where damage severity in each element of the structure is considered as optimization variables. An efficient objective function is formed using the first few frequencies and mode shapes of the structure. This objective function is minimized by a self-controlled multi-stage strategy to identify and quantify the damage extent of the structural members. In the first stage, standard PSO is utilized to get an initial solution to the problem. Subsequently, the algorithm identifies the most damage-prone elements of the structure using an adaptable threshold value of damage severity. These identified elements are included in the search space of the standard PSO at the next stage. Thus, the algorithm reduces the dimension of the search space and subsequently increases the accuracy of damage prediction with a considerable reduction in computational cost. The efficiency of the proposed method is investigated and compared with available results through three numerical examples considering both with and without noise. The obtained results demonstrate the accuracy of the present method can accurately estimate the location and severity of multi-damage cases in the structural systems with less computational cost.

  • It is important to determine supporting locations for structural stability when a structure is loaded with non-uniform load or supporting locations as well as the number of the supporting structures are restricted by the problem of space. Moreover, the supporting location optimization of complex structure in real world is frequently faced with discontinuous design space. Therefore, the traditional optimization methods based on derivative are not suitable Whereas, Genetic Algorithm (CA) based on stochastic search technique is a very robust and general method. The KSTAR in-vessel control coil installed in vacuum vessel is loaded with non- uniform electro-magnetic load and supporting locations are restricted by the problem of space. This paper shows the supporting location optimization for structural stability of the in-vessel control coil. Optimization has been performed by means of a developed program. It consists of a Finite Element Analysis interfaced with a Genetic Algorithm. In addition, this paper presents an algorithm to find an optimum solution in discontinuous space using continuous design variables.

  • This paper presents the quantification and location damage detection of plane and space truss structures in a two-phase method to reduce the computations efforts significantly. In the first phase, a proposed damage indicator based on the residual force vector concept is used to get the suspected damaged members. In the second phase, using damage quantification as a variable, a teaching-learning based optimization algorithm (TLBO) is used to obtain the damage quantification value of the suspected members obtained in the first phase. TLBO is a relatively modern algorithm that has proved distinguished in solving optimization problems. For more verification of TLBO effeciency, the classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used in the second phase to make a comparison between TLBO and PSO algorithms. As it is clear, the first phase reduces the search space in the second phase, leading to considerable reduction in computations efforts. The method is applied on three examples, including plane and space trusses. Results have proved the capability of the proposed method to precisely detect the quantification and location of damage easily with low computational efforts, and the efficiency of TLBO in comparison to the classical PSO.

  • In the optimized design of an actual structure, the design variable should be selected among any certain values or corresponds to a discrete design variable that needs to handle the size of a pre-formatted part. Various algorithms have been developed for discrete design. As recently reported, the sequential algorithm with orthogonal arrays(SOA), which is a local minimum search algorithm in discrete space, has excellent local minimum search ability. It reduces the number of function evaluation using orthogonal arrays. However it only finds a local minimum and the final solution depends on the initial value. In this research, the genetic algorithm, which defines an initial population with the potential solution in a global space, is adopted in SOA. The new algorithm, sequential algorithm with orthogonal arrays and genetic algorithm(SOAGA), can find a global solution with the properties of genetic algorithm and the solution is found rapidly with the characteristics of SOA.

  • Previous studies on pipe auto-routing algorithms generally used such algorithms as A*, Dijkstra, Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Ant Colony Optimization, to satisfy the relevant constraints of its own field and improve the output quality. On the other hand, this study aimed to significantly improve path-finding speed by applying the Jump Point Search (JPS) algorithm, which requires lower search cost than the abovementioned algorithms, for pipe routing. The existing JPS, however, is limited to two-dimensional spaces and can only find the shortest path. Thus, it requires several improvements to be applied to pipe routing. Pipe routing is performed in a three-dimensional space, and the path of piping must be parallel to the axis to minimize its interference with other facilities. In addition, the number of elbows must be reduced to the maximum from an economic perspective, and preferred spaces in the path must also be included. The existing JPS was improved for the pipe routing problem such that it can consider the above-mentioned problem. The fast path-finding speed of the proposed algorithm was verified by comparing it with the conventional A* algorithm in terms of resolution.

  • Optimization in the engineering design is to select the best of many possible design alternatives in a complex design space. In order to optimize, various optimization methods have been used. One major problem of traditional optimization methods is that they often result in local optima. Recently genetic algorithm based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics is used in many application fields for optimization. Genetic algorithm is more powerful to local optima, but it requires more calculation time and has difficulties in finding exact optimum point in design variable with real data type generally. In this paper. hybrid method was developed by coupling genetic algorithm and traditional direct search method. The developed method finds out a region for global optimum using genetic algorithm, and is to search global optimum using direct search method based on results obtained from genetic algorithm. By using hybrid method, calculation time is reduced and search efficient for optimum point is increased.

  • The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.
