  • Milking parlor wastewater contains high concentration suspended solid (SS), nitrogen, and/or phosphate as well as organic compounds. A new biological wastewater process by magnetic separation, magnetic activated sludge (MAS) process, was applied to milking parlor wastewater treatment process. A three step wastewater treatment process of coagulation sedimentation / ammonia stripping (C/S), magnetic activated sludge process and contact oxidation (CO) was proposed for removal of these pollutants. First step, C/S process recovered 96% TN and 96% PO43--P as resource for fertilizer from the wastewater. 81% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in wastewater was removed after MAS process. As a results, all pollutant concentrations satisfied Japanese effluent standards. Most of residual BOD and SS were removed by the CO process. It was estimated that the proposed process could reduce the process space to 1/7.

  • Since the fiber reinforced polymeric (FRP) composites are considered in next generation of space transportation systems, reliable thermal expansion properties should be well provided for structural design of composite materials. To obtain accurate mechanical behaviors at a cryogenic temperature, precise strain measurement and calibration must be provided. In this work, apparent strains (or thermal output) of temperature self-compensated strain gages were deliberately investigated for epoxy, CTBN modified epoxy and carbon fabric composite system from room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature. Also, fourth-order thermal output curves were presented for the further calibration. The results showed that the thermal output is heavily dependent on test materials and a large amount of apparent strains were observed for the polymer resins.

  • Miniature J-T cryocooler using nitrogen or argon has been widely adopted in cooling infrared sensor for space/military application and cryosurgery. Argon or nitrogen, however, has relatively low specific cooling power compared to nitrous oxide, but the ultimate operating temperature is much lower than nitrous oxide. On the other hand, nitrous oxide has large specific cooling power, but the operating temperature is limited to its boiling point (>183K). To compromise the different characteristics of these gases, the performance of miniature J-T cryocooler using argon and nitrous oxide mixture is investigated in this paper. Three different compositions of mixture (25/75, 50/50, and 75/25 molar fraction) are blended and tested. The results are compared with the experiments of pure argon and pure nitrous oxide. The experimental results show some encouraging potentiality of mixed refrigerant J-T cryocooler. The critical clogging problem, however, was observed with argon and nitrous oxide mixture, and the lowest achievable temperature with this mixture was limited to the freezing point of nitrous oxide. The paper discusses detailed clogging process of the mixture and suggests an alternative.

  • Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available. and uses helium as a working fluid. Over the past decade and a half, there has been rapid development of Stirling cryocooler, mainly for military and space applications. Stirling cryocoolers have been widely used lot the cooling of infrared sensors and high temperature superconducting filters to the temperature of the liquid nitrogen. The Stirling cryocooler with the rotary compressor is applicable to the cooling device for the compact mobile thermal imaging system, because the cryocoolers have the compact structure and light weight. In this paper, integral Stirling cryocooler is designed, manufactured and fabricated, and performance characteristics are investigated. This cooler delivers approximately 0.6W cooling at 80K for 20W of input power from 24V DC power supply.

  • Most J-T (Joule-Thomson) refrigerators use a Giaque-Hampson type heat exchanger due to its excellent thermal performance and compactness. The cryoprobe (cryosurgical probe) treating prostate cancer usually has a dimension of 17 gauge (1.6 mm diameter), so it does not have enough space to bear a Giaque-Hampson type heat exchanger. In this paper, the triplet heat exchanger is adopted as the heat exchanger of cryoprobe, and the performance is investigated with an experimental test. The result shows that the triplet heat exchanger can be substituted for Giaque-Hampson type heat exchanger in the application of cryosurgery.

  • Superconducting synchronous motors compared with conventional motors can reduce the motor size and enhance the motor efficiency for low-speed and high torque applications under the space constraints for propulsion system. Especially, homopolar superconducting synchronous motors (HSSMs) need less superconductor and lower magnetic flux density in superconductor field coil than air-cored superconducting synchronous motors (ASSMs). In addition, mechanical structure is more simplified and stability is increased because the superconductor field coil of HSSMs is not rotated in operation. In this paper, we present the outline of HSSMs including structure, characteristics and operational principles with the conceptual design of 5MW HSSM.

  • One of the main problems faced in developing India's first HTS power cable was that of shrinkage in length of the double-walled vacuum-insulated cryostat. The shrinkage was due to the evacuation of the annular vacuum space which results in a shorter working cable length. This work reports experimentally observed contraction during evacuation and analyses corrugated pipes/bellows which house the cable core of HTS cables. The effect of corrugation geometry including length, corrugation pitch and depth, diameters of corrugated pipes and thicknesses of pipes is studied numerically to realize the degree of shrinkage due to vacuum as well as chill down. Finally, necessary length compensation and associated cost is determined to tackle the shrinkage issue.

  • We have tested the performance of the Proto-model of Space Infrared Cryogenic System (PSICS), which is a small infrared camera, developed by Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute (KASI), Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), and i3system co., as a cooperation project. The purpose of PSICS is to ensure a technology of small infrared cryogenic system for future development of space infrared (IR) cameras. PSICS consists of cryogenic part, IR sensor and electronics part, and optical part. The performance test of each part and the integrated system has been completed successfully. PSICS will be used as a guiding camera for ground-based IR telescopes and a test system for developing a space-borne instrument.

  • Recently. the high-tc superconducting fault col-rent limiters (SFCL) are studied worldwide to be classified as a resistive type or an inductive type such as a magnetic shielding type and a inductive type. The high-tc SFCL wish an open core belongs to the magnetic shielding type SFCL. Unlike conventional magnetic shielding type SFCLS it uses the open core to reduce the mechanical vibrations and installation space, The high-tc SFCL with an open core was designed and manufactured by stacking three BSCCO 2212 tubes. It was tested in the maximum source voltage of 400 Vrms. The results such as the reduction of fault current and impedance of the SFCL are described in this paper. The results show that the fault current in the source voltage of 400 Vrms was reduced to be about 123 Apeak. about 3.9 times greater than the normal state current. Also, the impedance of the high-tc SFCL was about 9${\Omega}$ about 9 times greater than the normal state impedance. The impedance of the SFCL appears just after the fault, and its size is dependent on the source voltage. From the impedance, the inductance of the SFCL was calculated.

  • A 30[kVA] superconducting generator (SCG) is built and tested at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in Korea. This superconducting generator has an air-gap winding instead of the typical steel teeth structure. The rotor has 4 field coils of race-track type with NbTi superconducting wired. The rotor is composed of two dampers and a liquid helium composed of two dampers and a liquid helium container in which the field poles reside. The space between the outermost damper and the container is vacuum insulated. A ferrofluid seal is used between the stationary part connected to the couping and the rotor. A helium transfer coupling(HTC) has 3 passages of the recovered heilum gas and a gas flow control system. The open circuit test and sustained short circuit test are preformed to obtain the open circuit characteristics (OCC) and short circuit characteristics (SCC) Also. the test results usder the light load (up to 3.6[kW]) are given. The structure, manufacturing and basis test of the 30[kVA]SCG are discussed.
