The objective of this study is to investigate the contamination levels and dispersion patterns of arsenic and heavy metals and to estimate the bioaccessible fraction of the metals in soil and plant samples in the vicinity of the abandoned Songcheon Au-Ag mine. Tailings, soils, plants (Chinese cabbage, red pepper, soybean, radish, sesame leaves, green onion, lettuce, potato leaves, angelica and groundsel) and waters were collected around the mine site. After appropriate preparation, all samples were analyzed for As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by ICP-AES and ICP-MS. Elevated levels of As and heavy metals were found in tailings. Mean concentrations of As in agricultural soils were higher than the permissible level. Especially, maximum level of As in farmland soil was 513 mg/kg. The highest concentrations of As and Zn were found in Chinese cabbage (6.7 mg/kg and 359 mg/kg, respectively). Concentrations of As, Cd, and Zn in most stream waters which are used for drinking water around this mine area were higher than the permissible levels regulated in Korea. Maximum levels of As, Cd and Zn in stream waters were 0.78 mg/L, 0.19 mg/L and 5.4 mg/L, respectively. These results indicate that mine tailings can be the main contamination sources of As and heavy metals in the soil-water system in the mine area. The average of estimated bioaccessible fraction of As in farmland soils were $3.7\%$ (in simulated stomach) and $10.8\%$ (in simulated small intestine). The highest value of bioaccessible fraction of metal in farmland soils was $46.5\%$ for Cd.

Five districts; Su-weon, An-seong, Ok-cheon, Jin-ju and Je-ju, were chosen and growth characteristics of Glyclns soja in fifteen places were studied. The results obtained are summerized as follows: 1. Growth state was good on the levee of the brook where the soil was wet and fertile. 2. They showed high significant correlation (r=0.76**) between grain yield and phosphate content of the soil, an d also showed positive correlation (r=0.63*) between grain yield and soil pH. 3. Nitrogen content of the plant was high as Glycine soja growed well. 4. Shoot growth and leaf development curve showed similar pattern and the root noddle was prosperous in the middle stage while shoot growth was well in the late stage. 5. Glycine soja was expexted as a hopeful forage ceop, as it grow swell, easy to harvest seeds and nutritional value is high.

Our self-sufficiency of food has become less than $30{\%}$ and our nation is highly dependant on world's grain market for food. which is unstable in long term due to the world population growth faster than food production. Therefore, it is a great possibility that food might become a political weapon by way of its global shortage. its purchasing difficulty in international free trade market. and the resultant price rising. Our maximal capability of food production has become the most outstanding problem in the dimension of future food security. It would be the utmost scheme for maximal production of food to realize the maximal utilization of arable land through the enlargement of sufficient farming land and the conversion of rotation system for the more grain production. Extensional enlargement of arable land can be positively executed through the development of farming land in domestic and abroad countries. The readjustment of arable land and the installation or irrigation and drainage system can enforce the farming basement for maximal utilization of arable land through the improved rotation between paddy and upland. The prevention policy against farming land encroachment should be strictly executed through grain production encouragement on resting or marginal lands and regulation of utilization conversion for the other than food production on high grade farming lands. It is also required urgently to develope high yielding and high quality varieties through advanced genetic technology for the improvement of unit area yield, especially of wheat, corn. and soybean we import in large quantity The maximal utilization of arable land for the highest production of food can be realized through rational rotation system, the most adaptable crop cultivation on the suitable land, and the most optimal fertilization through the GIS analysis of agricultural environment information on the basis of the computerized soil resource data on super detailed soil maps(1:5000) surveyed plot by plot of whole nation.

In this study, we developed the quality control and assurance method of measurement data of SPAR (Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Research) system, a climate change research facility, for the first time. It was found that the precise processing of CO2 flux data among many observations were sig nificantly important to increase the accuracy of canopy photosynthesis measurements in the SPAR system. The collected raw CO2 flux data should first be removed error and missing data and then replaced with estimated data according to photosynthetic lig ht response curve model. Comparing the correlation between cumulative net assimilation and soybean biomass, the quality control and assurance of the raw CO2 flux data showed an improved effect on canopy photosynthesis evaluation by increasing the coefficient of determination (R2) and lowering the root mean square error (RMSE). These data processing methods are expected to be usefully applied to the development of crop growth model using SPAR system.
The experiments were carried out to develop simulation model for estimating the yield of soybean in upland and paddy field condition. Field experiments were done at National Institute of Crop Science in 2005. The evaluated soybean cultivars were Taekwangkong, Daewonkong, and Hwangkeumkong. Soybean seeds were planted by hill seeding with 3-4 seeds and row and hill spacing were $60{\times}10cm$ in upland and $60{\times}15cm$ in paddy field. Seeds were sown on row (without making ridge) and on the top of ridge in upland and paddy field, respectively. Field parameters were measured yield components ($plants/m^{2}$, pod no./plant, and 100-seed weight, seed yield and growth characteristics (stem length, leaf area at each stage, and dry weight of shoot) and after measuring they were compared the relationships with seed yield and yield components and seed yield and growth characteristics. Seed yield of soybean was affected by cultivars and planting density. Seed yield was higher in upland than paddy field due to the higher planting density in upland field. The upland soybeans generally had lower 100-seed weight than that of paddy field. Seed yield of soybean in a paddy field was greatest in Taekwangkong and followed by Daewonkong and Hwangkeumkong. The harvest index of taekwangkong and Hwanggumkong was higher in upland than paddy field, however, it was higher in paddy field than upland in Daewonkong. Seed yield was greatest in Daewonkong in both experimental fields. The greatest stem length was observed in taekwangkong and Hwanggumkong (R6) in late growth stage in paddy field. Dry weight of shoot and pod, pod number, stem length, and stem diameter were higher grown in paddy field than grown in upland. Crop growth rate (CGR) of cultivars was higher in paddy field after 8 WAS(weeks after sowing) and it was greatest at 13 WAS in Daewonkong among the cultivars. In upland field, CGR was greatest in Taekwangkong and then followed by Daewonkong and Hwanggumkong during 12 and 15 WAS. There was no significant relationships between 100-seed weight and seed yield in both experimental fields. A significant positive relationship was observed between seed number and seed yield. The correlation coefficients between leaf area and shoot dry weight were about 0.8 during the whole growth stage except 5 WAS and 4-5 WAS in paddy field and upland, respectively. This experiment was done just one year and drained paddy field condition was not satisfied drained condition successfully at 7th leaf age of soybean by the heavy rain, so we suggest that the excessive soil water reduced seed yield in paddy field and the weather condition should be considered for utilizing of these results.
This study was carried out with two cultivars under two levels of pH and four levels of nitrogen fertilization in a field and nutri-culture experiments to obtain the information about the effects of pH and nitrogen fertilization on the growth and yield of soybean. Acidic condition suppressed the growth of soybean plants, and thus yield and yield components of soybean decreased under acidic condition. But they increased with increased nitrogen fertilization. Especially, these respones were more remarkable under acidic condition and in the variety Jangbaegkong. Grain yield of soybean were highly correlated with the content of allantoin and total nitrogen of soybean plants in the variety Jangbaegkong, but this was not in the variety Danyeobkong. The content of protein and fat of soybean seeds decreased under acidic condition, and more nitrogen fertilization increased the protein content, but decreased the fat content.

An actinomycetes strain, T-2, which produces transglutaminase (EC 2.3.2.13), was isolated from soil and identified as belonging to the Actinomadura sp., based on taxonomc studies. The conditions for the transglutaminase production and its enzymatic properties were investigated. The optimum components for the transglutaminase production were 2% glucose, 1% polypeptone and soytone, and 0.1% MnCl2. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme reaction were pH 8.0 and $45^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme was stable within the pH range of 5.0-9.0 and $30^{\circ}C-45^{\circ}C$. The novel enzyme required no calcium ions for its activity. This enzyme polymerized various proteins such as casien, soy protein, hemoglobin, egg white, gelatin, and soybean milk.

This research determined the spectral reflectance characteristics and vegetation indices when intermixed with field crops and soil. Ground-level spectral reflectance were collected in the field experiment containing plots of soybean and other seven crops. The first and second derivative of reflectance spectra showed several peaks that were dependent in different degrees on leaf age and chlorophyll concentration in the crop leaves. This study evaluated a number of spectral indices for estimating chlorophyll concentrations at the leaf scale difference, using samples from field crops at various stages of senescence. Five vegetation indices were evaluated which had advantages over previous techniques. Experimental data recorded on field crops during the growing season are in good agreement with previous theoretical results.
In order to obtain a strain of producing lipase which has resistance against alkaline and detergent, a screening test was carried out. Among 500 strains isolated from soil samples, the strain J-19 was selected for this study. The composition of the optimum medium for the highest lipase production was 2.0% glycerin, 1.0% corn steep liquor, 2.0% yeast extract, 0.1% $MgSO_4$$7H_2O$, 0.2% $K_2HPO_4$, 1.5% soybean oil and 0.1% LAS(linear alkylbenzene sulfonate) with initial pH value of 10.0 and 3-day cultivation at $25^{\circ}C$. The lipase activity of the strain J-19 under optimal condition was 3.3. units/ml, which was increased about 1.3-fold than that of basal medium.
