Soybean is the important crop in Asian countries as protein source, oil production and animal feed. Improving soybean using genetic transformation is the principal tool in nowadays. Developing herbicide resistant transgenic soybean plants through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation has been worked in many previous studied. However, the transformation efficiency is still low. Many attempts try to find the optimum media condition for plant regeneration after infection. After transformation, the plant regeneration is very important condition to promote growth of transgenic plant. In this study, we optimized a regeneration condition for two Korean soybean cultivar, Dawonkong and Pungsannamulkong using cotyledon, cotyledonary nodes and hypocotyl as explant. The results showed that shoot regeneration of cotyledonary nodes on B5 medium containing 2 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine showed the highest percentage of regeneration in Dawonkong (75.8%) while Pungsannamulkong presented high number of shoots 2.12 shoots per explant. For transformation condition, co-cultivation in 7 days showed a high number of GUS positive expression. Most of explants can survived under media including 5 mg/L of glufocinate which refers phosphinotricin for 2-week selection. Washing with 400 mg/L of cefotaxime in several times and selection in plant regeneration media with 400 mg/L of cefotaxime can prevent bacteria growth, effectively.
Soybean sprouts are the third-most consumed vegetable in Korea. Several studies on cultivation techniques, including use of medicinal plants extracts, have been performed to enhance the quality and yield of soybean sprouts. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of lacquer, a medicinal plant extract, on the yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts. Linolenic acid content was significantly (p<0.05) increased in the sprouts produced by soaking seeds in lacquer extract diluted with equal volume of water. Lacquer extract significantly increased the flavonoid and phenolic contents (p<0.05). The content of total free amino acids, including ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid, was higher in lacquer extract-treated sprouts than in the untreated control. Results of this study suggest that lacquer extract could be used for enhancing the yield and nutritional values of soybean sprouts.
Cultivation methods for clean soybean sprouts were investigated using irrigating solutions with grapefruit seed extract, chitosan and phosphate buffer. Chitosan and phosphate buffer did not inhibit the growth of soybean sprouts and increased the yield. Especially phosphate buffer was effective in yield increase and rot inhibition. As the times of irrigation with phosphate buffer increased, the yield of soybean sprouts increased up to 12.3% compared to that of the control. The high increase of yield and rot inhibition of soybean sprouts were detected even in $4{\sim}8$ times irrigation with phosphate buffer.

As an accempt to increase thc efficiency of land use and the food production to achieve the national goal in the food self-sufficiency, nine cropping systems on the upper-land were examined in pure-stand and in mixtures of soybean, corn, potato and radish. The important conclusions of this study were summarized as follows; 1. The flowering date of soybean was two or three days earlier in pure-stand than in the mixture with corn. The maturing date two days earlier in the pure-stand than in the mixture with corn. The flowering and maturing dates were not different among various cropping systems in corn. 2. The stem length of soybean was significantly different among various cropping systems. Soybean in pure-stand was shorter in stem length than with corn. 3. The number of pods per soybean plant did not give any significant differences among various cultivation methods. 4. The length of internode and the number of nodes per soybean plant in the mixture with corn were greater than in the pure-stand. In the number of branches per plant this was reversed. 5. The average stem dry weight of soybean per 10a was not significantly different among various cultivation methods. 6. The soybean yield per 10a in the pure-stand was obviously greater than the mixture and there were significant differences among cultivation method within the mixture with corn in soybean yield. 7. The 1,000-grain weight of soybean was significantly different and those in the pure-stand was heavier than those in the mixture with corn. 8. Grain weight per soybean plant and the stem diameter in the pure-stand were significantly lesser than those in the mixture with corn. 9. In the comparisons of corn in the pure-stand and in the mixture with soybean, plant height, number of ear per 10a, mean ear weight and remember of grain per plant, 100-grain weight, ear length, ear girth and number of ear pel plant were not significantly different among various cultivation methods except for the grain yield per 10a. 10. In the economic analysis, the mixture with soybean and corn gave the greatest gross income. The combination 7 was the best which was 47.6% increase income comparing with the soybean pure-stand. 11. As it can be assumed, soybean plant was influenced greatly than corn by various cropping system. It is necessary to study more complex cropping system finding and giving more desirable multiple cropping system for the farmer.

This study was carried out to estimate carbon emission using LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and to establish LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) database of soybean production system. Based on collecting the data for operating LCI, it was shown that input of organic fertilizer was value of 3.10E+00 kg $kg^{-1}$ soybean and it of mineral fertilizer was 4.57E-01 kg $kg^{-1}$ soybean for soybean cultivation. It was the highest value among input for soybean production. And direct field emission was 1.48E-01 kg $kg^{-1}$ soybean during soybean cropping. The result of LCI analysis focussed on greenhouse gas (GHG) was showed that carbon footprint was 3.36E+00 kg $CO_2$-eq $kg^{-1}$ soybean. Especially $CO_2$ for 71% of the GHG emission. Also of the GHG emission $CH_4$, and $N_2O$ were estimated to be 18% and 11%, respectively. It might be due to emit from mainly fertilizer production (92%) and soybean cultivation (7%) for soybean production system. $N_2O$ was emitted from soybean cropping for 67% of the GHG emission. In $CO_2$-eq. value, $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ were 2.36E+00 kg $CO_2$-eq. $kg^{-1}$ soybean and 3.50E-01 kg $CO_2$-eq. $kg^{-1}$ soybean, respectively. With LCIA (Life Cycle Impact Assessment) for soybean production system, it was observed that the process of fertilizer production might be contributed to approximately 90% of GWP (global warming potential). Characterization value of GWP was 3.36E+00 kg $CO_2$-eq $kg^{-1}$.
As a primary study for SCP production from soybean curd waste water, selection of yeast and optimum cultivation condition of selected yeast on soybean curd waste water were investigated. Eighteen strains of the genus Candida and Saccharamyces were tested to compare their abilities to grow on soybean curd waste water. Candida utilis YUFE 1508 and Candida guilliermondii KFCC 35120 grew most successfully. Optimum pH and optimum temperature of the basal medium for growth of the two strains were $6.0{\sim}6.5$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimum culture medium of the two yeasts was soybean curd waste water supplemented with molasses 2.5% (as total sugar), ammonium acetate 0.1-0.3% (as nitrogen), $KH_2PO_4$ 0.1-0.2% (as phosphorus), and $K_2HPO_4$ 0.05% (as phosphorus). But yeast growth was not affected by metal salts. Under the optimum cultivation condition, the maximum cell weights of Candida utilis YUFE 1508 and Candida guillfermondii KFCC 35120 were 1.313g and 1.322g/100ml of culture broth respectively after 48 hr of cultivation. The cell yields of Candida utilis YUFE 1508 and Candida guilliermondii KFCC 35120 were 68.4% and 74.2%, respectively, based on utilized sugar. On the other hand, crude protein of dry yeast produced by Candida utilis YUFE 1508 and Candida guilliermondii KFCC 35120 under optimum condition was 54.0% and 56.8%, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the growth promoting effects and improvement of antioxidant activity of the soybean sprouts treated with Chlorella sp. culture solution. The soybean sprout treated with 0.1% and 0.2% Chlorella sp. culture solution was significantly increased the length (more than 43.0%), the thickness (more than 0.5~0.7 mm), fresh weight (more than 2.9~3.7 g) compared to non-treated control in vitro. In organic soybean sprouts farm, the 0.2% chlorella culture solution applied to mass culture of soybean sprout and the fresh weight of soybean sprouts increased by more than 25% and the yield was very high as 598.33% compared to untreated control. In addition of sensory test, there is no fishy odor and better crunchy texture and nutty flavor for the treatment soybean sprouts compared to untreated soybean sprouts. Particularly, free-radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) of the soybean sprouts were significantly increased more than 26.1% and 40.4%, respectively by treated with 0.1% and 0.2% Chlorella culture solution. Consequently, the treatment of chlorella culture solution to grow soybean sprouts is also promoting quality and antioxidant activity as well as promoting the growth of sprouts. Therefore, chlorella is considered to be worth as functional materials for high-quality sprouts grown.
Paddy-upland rotation system is one of the important cropping system for improving soil quality and crop productivity. we conducted to investigate the effect of paddy-upland rotation system on soil properties and crop productivity in reclaimed tidal land. The paddy-upland rotation could be effective to conserve soil water contents and prevent from salt damage when cultivating upland crops. The first two years of maize cultivation after rice cultivation could be effective to secure stable production. However, in case of soybean crop, the rotation effect might be lower than that of maize. In the first year, the yield of soybean was 214 kg/10a. In the second and third year, the yields of soybean decreased consecutively to 152, 123 kg/10a respectively. In this paper, it would be suggested that maize be cultivated for up to two years and soybean be cultivated for one year after rice crop grown in reclaimed tidal land. This study could be provide basic data of the physico-chemical properties applicable to paddy-upland rotation system at reclaimed tidal lands.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of rate of infected common scab and yield characteristics of fall potato(Solanum tuberosum L.) where green manual crops had been previously cultivated, crushed and tilled and P\ulcornerE transparent vinyl film had been mulched and tunneled to solar heating of soil from May 21. 1998 to July 28. 1998. The total yields of green manual crops which had been previousely cultivated were as followed order : pioneer 855F(64.3MT/ha), soybean(25.0MT/ha), red clover and orchardgrass. The average below-ground temperature at the depths of 5, 10 and 20cm were 54, 45 and 44$^{\circ}C$ during the mulching period, respectively The rate of infected area per potato tuber of common scab decreased by solar heating the soils with mulching after the soybean and red clover cultivation as with previous croppings. Plant height, SPAD(soil plant analysis development) reading, fresh weight of stems, and fall potato's tuber yields tended to increase by the cultivation of green manual crops and mulching of P\ulcornerE film. Fall potato's tuber yields were remarkably affected in the plot of soybean, red clover and pioneer 855F+cultivation of fall potato. T-N, K and Ca contents of fall potato(stem and tuber) also tended to increase by the cultivation of green manual crops and mulching of P\ulcornerE film. T-N, K and Ca contents of soil tended to increase after the cultivation of green manual crops and mulching of P\ulcornerE film and then reduced to contents of soil before green manual planting after potato harvesting.

Seoritae with green cotyledons refers to Korean native black beans harvested when the frost falls because the maturity is late. It is one of the beans preferred by consumers because of its softness and high sugar content. Because of late maturity, if the agricultural work is delayed by weather or agricultural schedule in green cotyledon black soybean (Seoritae), it affects seriously harvest and yield of soybeans. The aim of this study was to investigate the marginal seeding period on June 30, July 10 and July 20 in Cheongju and Jecheon area in Korea to produce stable soybean yield. The yields of green cotyledon black soybean as seeding date in Cheongju area are as follows: Seolitae (Yeoncheon), Seoltae (Goesan) and Seoritae (Gogseong), which increased by 23%, 56%, 23% and 40%, respectively, compare to July 10th to June 30th. As soybean sowing is delayed, the quality of soybean seeds has decreased due to the increase of immature seeds and fungal damaged seeds. The contents of anthocyanin in Cheongju area a functional substance of soybeans, was high on July 20 for Heukcheong, on June 30 for Seolitae (Yeoncheon), on July 10 for Seoritae (Goesan). The yields of Heukcheong and Seolitae (Yeoncheon) in Jecheon area were increased by 5% and 17%, respectively, compare to July 10th to June 30th, while Seolite (Goesan) and Seolite (Gogseong) were high in yields on June 30th. Similarly in Cheongju area, as the sowing period is delayed, the number of immature and mold damaged seeds in Jecheon area increased. The contents of anthocyanin in Jecheon area was high on July 10 for Heukcheong, on June 30 for Seolitae (Yeoncheon) and Seolitae (Goesan). From the above results, Sowing marginal date of green cotyledon black soybeans (Seolitae) in Cheongju area increased 30% in sowing on July 10 and increased 2% in sowing on July 20 compared to June 30. And Sowing marginal date of green cotyledon black soybeans (Seolitae) in Jecheon area increased 2% in July 10 compared to June 30, and the yield decreased rapidly on July 20. We have identified the seeding time limit of green cotyledon black bean in Chungbuk province. It will be possible to provide a variety of crop selection after double cropping of farmers. And by knowing the yield and seed quality of soybean according to sowing date, farmers will observe appropriate sowing period of soybeans for high quality. From the viewpoint of consumers, functional substances of Seoritae will meet the desire for health.
