  • Kushia zosteraphila Harris V.A. & Iwasaki, 1996 is newly collected and described from macroalgae in the intertidal region of Gijang-gun, along the southeastern coastal region of Korea. Kushia zosteraphila can be distinguished from congeners by following morphological characteristics: the length of the first dorsal seta similar with the second dorsal seta of female P5, the length to width ratio of the female caudal ramus, and the presence of a conspicuous comb on the accessory lobe of the male antennule. Although there are some minor discrepancies, the main diagnostic characteristics of the specimen from the study area are well-matched with the original description. We herein provide detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations of this species. According to a survey of the location of the reported porcellidiid species in Korea, this specimen is the second record in Korean waters of the genus Kushia. A key to species of the family Porcellidiidae in Korea is provided. A partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene was obtained and provided as a DNA barcode for this species.

  • This study analyzes the correlation between Western Pacific (WP) teleconnection pattern index (WPI) in April during 1954-2008 and rainfall amounts in the same month. Based on the results, it is identified that there have been strong positive correlations between central China, Korea and the southwestern part of Japan in the East Asian region. Through differences between 10 positive WP years and 10 negative WP years selected from the April WPI excluding ENSO years, it is found that rainfall amounts increase in April of positive WP years due to the following characteristics. Increases in rainfall amounts are evident in the East Asian middle latitudinal region where the positive correlation between the two variables is the highest and this is because anomalous southwesterlies are strengthened in the East Asian middle latitudinal region due to the spatial pattern of a south-low-north-high anomalous pressure system centered on this region that is made by anomalous anticyclones centered on the southeastern side of the region and other anomalous anticyclones centered on the northeastern side of the region. In addition, anomalous westerlies (jet) are strengthen in the upper troposphere of the East Asian middle latitudinal region and as a result, anomalous upward flows are strengthened in this region and thus anomalous warm air temperatures are formed in the entire level of the troposphere in the region. In addition to atmospheric environments, anomalous warm sea surface temperatures are formed in the seas in the East Asian middle latitudinal region to help the rainfall amount increases in the East Asian middle latitudinal region.

  • We investigated the seasonal variation of diatoms from the modern bottom floor sediments of the reservoirs distributed in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The studied reservoirs include each three reservoirs from Southeastern part, Central Southern part and Southwestern part, respectively, to compare the dominant diatom assemblages that are ecologically controlled by local environments. In the Southeastern region, Aulacoseira spp., Fragilaria crotonensis, Fragilaria tenera, Gomphonema gracile, G. parvulum and Gyrosigma attenuatum were dominant species. Aulacoseira spp., Cymbella tumida, Cymbella turgidula, Diploneis finnica and Fragilaria crotonensis were dominant taxa in the Central Southern regions. In the southwestern region, Aulacoseira spp., Fragilaria crotonensis, Gomphonema parvulum and Stenopterobia curvular were predominated. Of which Aulacoseira spp. were predominant species at all reservoirs. In addition most of dominants are saproxenous taxa living in the clean water area, and the water quality of these reservoirs is considered to be less polluted water. As a result of seasonal comparison of diatom productivity, the first productivity is higher in summer than in winter. However, diatom valve abundance in the southeastern reservoirs was fewer from the samples collected at May than February.

  • Polychaete assemblages and their responses to habitat conditions were investigated in the southeastern continental shelf of Korea. The result of cluster analysis revealed that the study area could be divided into two regions, one including the shallow coastal region and the other the offshore region. The shallow coastal region sustained 4 polychaete assemblages: Nothria holobranchiata assemblage in the most northern part of fine sediments off Pohang, Magelona-Maldane assemblage off Gampo, Ophelina acuminata assemblage in the middle coastal area off Ulsan, Nothria conchylega assemblage in the south part off Pusan. These coastal polychaete assemblages contained less than 10 species per station and showed very low species diversity (H' = 1.22-1.52). The offshore also contained 4 assemblages: Terebellides-Aglaophamus assemblage in the northern and deep area of very fine sediments, Myriochele oculata and Spiophanes kroyeri assemblages in the central area of sandy bottoms, and Ninoe palmata assemblage in the southern offshore of sandy bottom. The offshore assemblages showed rather more species and higher diversity than coastal assemblages (H' = 1.90-2.26). The offshore region consisting of sandy sediment showed very low population densities. Some dominant species showed specific preference to sediment types and this phenomenon could be detected through their feeding modes. Depth or bottom temperature seems to be related to the distribution of most dominant worms. Thus the polychaete assemblages of the study area are found to be under the control of both a gradient of sedimentary properties and that of bottom temperature.

  • The climate change is expected to weaken the habitat of Pinus densiflora and P. thunbergii, but they are still in high demand for planting. This study aims to suggest the rational community planting design based on natural forests' community structure in the southeastern region of Korea (warm temperate zone). For this study, we surveyed 22 plots of Pinus densiflora community and 60 plots of P. thunbergii community in Busan Metropolitan City which is located in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. We investigated the diameter of breath hight (DBH) and population of each tree layer in a $100m^2$ quadrat and used a regression analysis to derive a regression equation for estimating the mean number of planting individuals in each DBH. The coefficient between canopy layer's DBH and growth individuals per unit area ($100m^2$) was 0.700 for P. thunbergii communities and 0.533 for P. densiflora communities, indicating very high explanatory power by single factor. The predicted regression equation of between DBH and growth density was $Y=31.176e^{-0.055x}$ (X=DBH, Υ=growth individuals per $100m^2$) for P. thunbergii communities and $Y=38.351e^{-0.059x}$ for P. densiflora communities. Planting densities of P. densiflora communities and P. thunbergii communities in southeast region were higher than the central region.

  • This study aims to examine changes in the location and spatial structure of the Korean manufacturing industry and to consider the factors that influenced them. From the 1960s to the 1980s, under Korea's export-oriented industrial policy and location policy of large-scale industrial complexes, a manufacturing spatial structure was centered on the Seoul Metropolitan Region and the Southeastern Region. Since the mid-1990s, with the emergence of economic globalization and strengthening corporate competitiveness, technology- and knowledge-intensive manufacturing and R&D activities have been concentrated in the Seoul Metropolitan Region. On the other hand, as the overseas relocation of assembly plants accelerated, the decline of industrial cities in the non-Metropolitan Region progressed. Since the 2010s, manufacturing and start-up activities have become more concentrated in the Seoul Metropolitan Region, showing signs of expanding to the adjacent northern Chungcheong Region. This results from changes in the global value chains followed by overseas relocation of production functions at the global level, and concentration of knowledge-intensive manufacturing and R&D activities in the Seoul Metropolitan Region at the national level, which are reflected in the spatial structure of the manufacturing industry.

  • This paper aims to clarify the types of cities by automobile traffic accidents and to search the characteristics of automobile traffic accidents for each type. Cities by automobile traffic accidents are classified into 4 types. Seoul city belongs to Type A in which 'automobile use and accident type' is closely related. Osan city belongs to Type B where the number of automobile traffic accidents is the greatest. And many satellite cities of Seoul city and metropolitan cities, and cities distributed in Southeastern industrial region belongs to Type C in which automobile accidents are fewer than the national average. Other 57 cities belongs to Type D which there are more automobile accidents than the national average. The cause of traffic accidents for each city type are as follows. In Seoul city the major causes of accidents are no security of safety distance, road patterns of other region, and injury of pedestrians. In Osan city, many single lane road accidents, central line invasion, and traffic accidents of children of under 14 years. And in satellite cities of Seoul city and metropolitan cities, and cities distributed in Southeastern industrial region, the major causes are traffic regulation violation, of under 6m in crossroad accidents, accident of children of under 14 years, and injury of pedestrians. Lastly, in other 57 cities chief causes are traffic regulation violation, wrong methods of passing crossroads, injury of children of under 14 and elderly of over 61 years, and injury of pedestrians.

  • This research was carried out to analyze long-term shoreline change on Busan Songjeong Beach using multi-temporal remote sensed data, GPS survey data and grain size analysis. As a result of multi-temporal satellite imagery analysis, the beach was stable status till early 2000s, but the erosion occurred over whole beach after the construction of shore protection road since 2000. In the result of DEM analysis, the elevation of beach reduced and the slope of berm increased after construction of shore protection road along the coast, this means the erosion environment was dominant on the beach. But the sedimentation was slightly stronger than the erosion in northern region of the beach, then the slope of berm was gentle. In the result of grain size analysis using in-situ samples, the coarsening-trend was found in southeastern region (Line E) of the beach, it is caused by strong wave energy from the outer sea. Consequently, major causes of the beach erosion in the study area were the interception of sand supply from a dune owing to shore protection road construction and scouring phenomenon by strong wave energy in southeastern region of the beach. If the topographic or artificial change will not occur in the future, the erosion in this area will continue. Therefore the prevention measures are required.

  • The phylogeny and geography of the medaka (Oryzias latipes) populations of Korea were investigated by analyzing sequence data for the mitochondrial control region. From the 41 haplotypes including 25 Korean haplotypes detected in 64 Korean specimens and data for the Japanese and Chinese populations, phylogenetic and nested clade analyses were executed to examine the phylogeny of haplogroups and the relation of the genetic architecture of the haplotypes to the historical geography of the Korean medaka fish. The analyses suggest that there are two very distinct lineages of Korean medaka, and that these result from reproductive isolation mechanisms due to geographic barriers. The southeastern lineage has experienced recent range expansion to the western region. The northwestern lineage, sister to Chinese populations, showed evidence of internal range expansion with shared haplotypes.
