  • Spatial and temporal variations of hydrography and currents are investigated in the Southeastern Sea of Korea during October 1982. The distribution of the water mass of high salinity (>34.40${\textperthousand}$) and low dissolved oxygen concentration (<5.0ml/l) indicates that the Tsushima current flows northward as it passes the Western Channel of the Korea Strait. The cold water (<$6.0^{\circ}c$) with low salinity (<$34.20{\textperthousand}$) and high dissolved oxygen concentration (>6.0ml/l) reaches the bottom of the western channel of the Korea Strait after flowing southward leaning against the slope rather than following the deepest part of the Channel. Repeated sections in the Korea Strait show a remarkable change of hydrographic structure over a period of 4 days ; both warn and cold waters are intensified, particularly in the eastern part of the strait toward the Tsushima Island.

  • A portable count-ratemeter and a thermoluminescent detector ($CaSO_4:Dy$) have been used to obtain total gamma dose rates at approximately 50 locations during the course of several survey trips in the southeastern Korea. The purposes of these measurement were to provide a future reference data and to establish the approximate range of population exposure to the natural environmental radiation. The natural levels encountered ranged from a low of 14.6 microroentgen per hour to a high of 18.9 microroentgen per hour with a mean of $16.3{\pm}1.0$ microroentgen per hour. Among these results are the relatively high natural dose rate levels in the Masan area and Yangsan-Tongdosa area with the relatively low natural dose rate levels in the Gyeongsan-Cheongdo area and the Samrangjin-Jinyeong-Gimhae area.

  • Three penaeid species, Penaeus monodon, P. semisulcatus and Metapenaeopsis lata are reported from the southeastern coast of Korea. P. monodon and P. semisulcatus have been incorrectly known so far as P. bubulus and P. monodon, respectively, in Korea. M. lata is the first record of this species from Korean waters. Morphological diagnoses are given with coloration and distribution for the three species.

  • The concentrations of 20 congeners of PCBs were determined in surficial and dated sediments from Jinhae, Busan, Ulsan and Yeongil Bay of Korea to assess current distributions as well as historical trends. The concentration ranges of total CBs in sediments were nd-138.60 ng/g dry wt. The concentrations of total CBs were significantly different among bays in the southeastern coastal areas (Kruskal-Wallis Test, p=0.036), Showing the Order Of Busan>Ulsan>Yeongil>Jinhae Bay. Predominant PCB homologues were penta-, hexa- and hepta-CBs. The down-core distributions of PCBs showed that the highest concentrations occurred in the late 1960s, coinciding with the onset of industrialization of Korea. The compositions of PCB congeners in sediment among bays were uniform, suggesting that major sources were not changed over time.

  • The floristic composition and structure of the Oriental Arbor-viate forest, natural monument no. 1, were investigated in the Daegu city, southeastern Korea. Vegetation stratification have four layers including tree (>5m), subtree (2m-5m), shrub (1m-2m) and herbs (<1m), which occupied 63.8%, 10.7%, 12.1% and 49.4%, respectively. The vegetation of the study area were divided into Artemisia keiskeana - Quercus variabilis and Pyrrosia linearifolia-Thuja orientalis (OAV) communities. Frequency distribution for diameter classes of the Oriental Arbor-vitae population showed a reverse-J shape. The result suggests that the OAV forest of this site might maintains continuously the present state. The annual radial growth of OAV, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis, the dominant species of the present site showed 0.29, 1.01 and 1.28 mm/year, respectively. Competition of OAV with theh other species including P. densiflora and Q. variabilis could influence negatively on the growthand survival of OAV forest in this site.
