This paper investigates how two different modes of feedback (selective vs. comprehensive) affect selected students' writing development in terms of three different types of measurement (accuracy, fluency, and complexity). 139 university students participated in the study, and 278 writing samples were analyzed. The results of the study indicate that participants who received selective feedback wrote more accurately and fluently than their counterparts. However, in terms of complexity, both selective and comprehensive groups showed no sign of improvement in semester-based investigations. The results of this study support Skehan's (2009) theory of trade-off effects, suggesting that 'natural' tension exists between accuracy and complexity when resources are limited. Moreover, this finding contrasts with the theory of Cognition Hypothesis, which proposes that task complexity will be associated with increases in complexity and accuracy. In the study, selected participants (N=21) strongly nominated their error sources as unfamiliarity toward using key words, usage, transition, and sentence types. This study not only contributes to the accumulation of our current knowledge in the related area of theory, but offers educational implications for those who are dealing with intermediate-level students when deciding what particular teaching content should constitute a priority within a limited instructional period.

Increase in computational cost and exhaustive search can lead to more complexity and computational energy. Thus, there is need for effective and efficient scheme to reduce the complexity to achieve optimal energy utilization. This will improve the energy efficiency and enhance the proficiency in terms of the resources needed to achieve convergence. This paper primarily focuses on the development of hybrid swarm intelligence scheme for reducing the computational complexity in binary optimization. In order to reduce the complexity, both artificial bee colony (ABC) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been employed to effectively minimize the exhaustive search and increase convergence. First, a new approach using ABC and PSO has been proposed and developed to solve the binary optimization problem. Second, the scout for good quality food sources is accomplished through the deployment of PSO in order to optimally search and explore the best source. Extensive experimental simulations conducted have demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the ABC approaches for reducing complexity and energy consumption in terms of convergence, search and error minimization performance measures.
Direct tracking problem of moving noncircular sources for multiple arrays is investigated in this study. Here, we propose an improved unscented particle filter (I-UPF) direct tracking method, which combines system proportional symmetry unscented particle filter and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. Noncircular sources can extend the dimension of sources matrix, and the direct tracking accuracy is improved. This method uses multiple arrays to receive sources. Firstly, set up a direct tracking model through consecutive time and Doppler information. Subsequently, based on the improved unscented particle filter algorithm, the proposed tracking model is to improve the direct tracking accuracy and reduce computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed improved unscented particle filter algorithm for noncircular sources has enhanced tracking accuracy than Markov Chain Monte Carlo unscented particle filter algorithm, Markov Chain Monte Carlo extended Kalman particle filter, and two-step tracking method.
With rapid technological and market change, new product development (NPD) complexity is a significant issue that organizations continually face in their development projects. There are numerous factors, which cause development projects to become increasingly costly & complex. A product is more likely to be successfully developed and marketed when the complexity inherent in NPD projects is clearly understood and carefully managed. Based upon the previous studies, this study examines the nature and importance of complexity in developing new products and then identifies several issues in managing complexity. Issues considered include: definition of complexity : consequences of complexity; and methods for managing complexity in NPD projects. To achieve high performance in managing complexity in development projects, these issues need to be addressed, for example: A. Complexity inherent in NPD projects is multi-faceted and multidimensional. What factors need to be considered in defining and/or measuring complexity in a development project? For example, is it sufficient if complexity is defined only from a technological perspective, or is it more desirable to consider the entire array of complexity sources which NPD teams with different functions (e.g., marketing, R&D, manufacturing, etc.) face in the development process? Moreover, is it sufficient if complexity is measured only once during a development project, or is it more effective and useful to trace complexity changes over the entire development life cycle? B. Complexity inherent in a project can have negative as well as positive influences on NPD performance. Thus, which complexity impacts are usually considered negative and which are positive? Project complexity also can affect the entire organization. Any complexity could be better assessed in broader and longer perspective. What are some ways in which the long-term impact of complexity on an organization can be assessed and managed? C. Based upon previous studies, several approaches for managing complexity are derived. What are the weaknesses & strengths of each approach? Is there a desirable hierarchy or order among these approaches when more than one approach is used? Are there differences in the outcomes according to industry and product types (incremental or radical)? Answers to these and other questions can help organizations effectively manage the complexity inherent in most development projects. Complexity is worthy of additional attention from researchers and practitioners alike. Large-scale empirical investigations, jointly conducted by researchers and practitioners, will help gain useful insights into understanding and managing complexity. Those organizations that can accurately identify, assess, and manage the complexity inherent in projects are likely to gain important competitive advantages.
For external noise prediction of railway vehicles, sophisticated individual source modelling as well as appropriate noise propagation model from the sources is necessary to ensure the accuracy of the predicted results and contributions of each equipment to the overall noise levels. Accurate and reasonable identification procedures of sound sources of equipment including source strength, directivity and positions installed in the train play an important role in a prediction model, since it is not easy to establish a simple model for the sources with a single rule due to the complexity of source characteristics of equipment in size and directivity pattern. This paper guidelines practical considerations for identification of noise sources in railway vehicles including typical source characteristics of several sub-systems that emits noise to the environment, particularly for electric multiple unit(EMU), and verify effectiveness of assumptions used in the modelling of equipment by measurement with a simple part. The predicted external noise level of a complete train using Exnoise, which was developed by Hyundai-Rotem and has been verified in the a lot of field-tests, incorporating source modelling considered in this paper shows close correlation with the measured ones.
In this paper, we introduce the direction of arrival(DOA) estimation of distributed signal based on the improved ESPRIT algorithm. Most research on the estimation of DOA has been performed based on the assumption that the signal sources are point sources. However, we consider a two-dimensional distributed signal source model using improved ESPRIT algorithm. In the distributed signal source model, a source is represented by two parameters, the azimuth angle and elevation angle. We address the estimation of the elevation and azimuth angles of distributed sources based on the parametric source modeling in the three-dimensional space with two uniform linear arrays. The array output vector is obtained by integrating a steering vector over all direction of arrival with the weighting of a distributed source density function. We also develop an efficient estimation procedures that can reduce the computational complexity. Some examples are shown to demonstrate explicity the estimation procedures under the distributed signal source model.
The integration of high-capacity terrestrial networks with non-terrestrial communication using satellites has become essential to support seamless low-latency services based on artificial intelligence and big data. Tunable light sources have been instrumental in resolving the complexity of channel management in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, contributing to increased network flexibility and serving as optical sources for long-distance coherent systems. Recently, these light sources have been applied to beam-steering devices in laser communication and sensing applications across ground, aerial, and satellite transport. We examine the utilization and requirements of tunable lasers in WDM networks and describe the relevant development status. In addition, performance requirements and development directions for tunable lasers used in optical interference systems and beam-steering devices are reviewed.

The existing direct position determinations(DPD) for coherently distributed(CD) sources are mostly applicable for uniform linear array(ULA), which result in a low degree of freedom(DOF), and it is difficult for them to realize the effective positioning in underdetermined condition. In this paper, a novel DPD algorithm for coherently distributed sources based on compressed sensing with a moving nested array is present. In this algorithm, the nested array is introduced to DPD firstly, and a positioning model of signal moving station based on nested array is constructed. Owing to the features of coherently distributed sources, the cost function of compressed sensing is established based on vectorization. For the sake of convenience, unconstrained transformation and convex transformation of cost functions are carried out. Finally, the position coordinates of the distribution source signals are obtained according to the theory of optimization. At the same time, the complexity is analyzed, and the simulation results show that, in comparison with two-step positioning algorithms and subspace-based algorithms, the proposed algorithm effectively solves the positioning problem in underdetermined condition with the same physical element number.

Naval ship design and related other activities can be characterized by the complexity of the interactions among products, activities, and disciplines. Such complexities often result in inferior designs, cost overrun, and late-delivery. Hence there exist tremendous interests in both improving the design process itself and optimizing the interactions among design activities. This paper looks at the complexity of designing naval ships thereby leading to the innovation of current ship design practices using design structure matrix. It can be used to induce the optimal ordering of design activities as well as identify sources of complexities. The method presented here identifies coupled design activities useful for reducing the complexity of naval ship design as well as optimally reordering design activities. This paper recommends the use of design structure matrix method suitable for numerically optimizing the concept design process of naval ship, and reducing cost and time required in designing naval ships by modeling and analyzing the design activities and engineering tasks, defined in systems engineering planning documents.

In this paper, a new variable wavelet packet decomposition audio coder, based on the time varying characteristic of the audio signals, is proposed and presents a technique to incorporate psychoacoustic models into an adaptive wave let packet scheme. The proposed filterbank improves the defect of the polyphase filterbank that could not properly represent the critical band and the defect of QMF-tree filter that need high complexity to implement. The filterbank consists of varying number of subband from 4 to 26 bands and use Daubechies 6-order wave let. The codec yields excellent quality at total bit rates of about 128kbps for monophonic CD-quality signals with an sampling frequency of 44.1kHz and reduces complexity by 19% for various bit-rates and sources with encoding and decoding process.
