  • In this study, the dynamic interaction between an Arctic Spar and drifting level ice is examined in time domain using the newly developed ice-hull-mooring coupled dynamics program. The in-house program, CHARM3D, which is the hull-riser-mooring coupled dynamic simulator is extended by coupling with the open-source discrete element method (DEM) simulator, LIGGGHTS. In the LIGGGHTS module, the parallel-bonding method is implemented to model the level ice using an assembly of multiple bonded spherical particles. As a case study, a spread-moored Artic Spar platform, whose hull surface near waterline is the inverted conical shape, is chosen. To determine the breaking-related DEM parameter (the critical bonding strength), the four-point numerical bending test is used. A series of numerical simulations is systematically performed under the various ice conditions including ice drift velocity, flexural strength, and thickness. Then, the effects of these parameters on the ice force, platform motions, and mooring tensions are discussed. The simulations reveal various features of dynamic interactions between the drifting ice and moored platform for various ice conditions including the novel synchronous resonance at low ice speed. The newly developed simulator is promising and can repeatedly be used for the future design and analysis including ice-floater-mooring coupled dynamics.

  • Nine alkali-activated (AA) mortars were mixed and cured at water or air-dried conditions to explore the significance and limitation for the application of the combination of Ba and Ca ions as an alkali-activator. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) was used for source materials, and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) were employed as alkali activators. Test results clearly showed that the water curing condition was more effective than the air-dried curing condition for the formation of the denser calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gels that had a higher molar Si/Ca ratio, resulting in a higher strength development. At the same time, the introduction of Ba(OH)2 led to the formation of 2CaO·Al2O3·SiO2·8H2O (C2ASH8) hydrates with higher molar Si/Al and Ca/Al ratios. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that the developed cementless mortars have highly effective performance and high potential as an eco-friendly sustainable building material.

  • In the recent 2017 annual average fine dust concentration (PM2.5) statistics released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Korea has a high concentration of 25.14㎍/m3, which is about twice the average of 12.5㎍/m3 in OECD countries. Fine dust (PM2.5) is the main source of secondary pollutant production by the reaction of primary pollutants emitted from automobiles and thermal power plants, mainly composed of sulfates, nitrates, and organic carbon. The permeable block is an eco-friendly product that prevents rainwater from collecting on the surface of the road because it does not penetrate the groundwater properly, and is widely constructed on sidewalks or parking lots to recharge groundwater in case of rain. In addition, the pavement of the permeable block is a fundamental solution to reduce pollution by preventing rainwater from flowing into the stream, and it also has the advantage of easy replacement as well as low replacement costs. Therefore, this study was a basic experiment to produce permeable blocks mixed with TiO2 and diatomite to improve indoor air quality, and intended to analyze the flexural strength and compressive strength of permeable blocks mixed with TiO2.

  • Today, the booming construction in Ethiopia is leading to an increased demolition of concrete structures whereby these demolished structures are disposed at landfills. The current practice is creating a huge amount of waste which is environmentally unfriendly and is becoming the main source of pollution in communities. This paper discusses the potential use of demolished concrete from site tested specimens as a recycled aggregate material for new structural concrete. The mechanical, physical and chemical properties of RCA are studied to understand the suitability in the production of recycled concrete. Tests including gradation, unit weight, soundness, density, and abrasion will be conducted to assess RCA properties. Since the percentage of RCA govern the strength of concrete, a C25 concrete is mixed by the ratio of 25%, 50% & 100% RCA with and without water reducing admixture and a control mixture composed of natural aggregate. The output of this study will highly impact the growing construction industry and communities in Ethiopia thereby reducing waste, saving cost, conserving natural aggregates, building capacity and setting quality standards.

  • For this study, CrAlN multilayer coatings were deposited on SKD61 substrates using a multi-arc ion plating technique. The structural characteristics of the CrAlN multilayer coatings were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the adhesion of the coatings was assessed through scratch testing, and the mechanical strength was evaluated using nanoindentation and tribometric tests for frictional properties. The results show that the CrAlN multilayer coatings possess a uniform and dense structure with excellent mechanical strength. Hardness measurements indicated that the CrAlN coatings have high hardness values, and both the coating adhesion and wear resistance were found to be improved compared to CrN. The addition of aluminum is anticipated to contribute to enhanced durability and wear resistance.

  • In bistatic sonar operation, the scattering strength of a sonar target is characterized by the probe signal frequency, the aspect angle and the bistatic angle. Therefore, the target detection and identification performance of the bistatic sonar may vary depending on how the positions of the target, sound source, and receiver are changed during sonar operation. In this study, it was evaluated which variable is advantageous to change by comparing the target identification performance between the case of changing the aspect angle and the case of changing the bistatic angle during the operation. A scenario of identifying a hollow sphere and a cylinder was assumed, and performance was compared by classifying two targets with a support vector machine and comparing their accuracy using a finite element method-based acoustic scattering simulation. As a result of comparison, using the scattering strength defined by the frequency and the bistatic angle with the aspect angle fixed showed superior average classification accuracy. It means that moving the receiver to change the bistatic angle is more effective than moving the sound source to change the aspect angle for target identification.

  • In this study, we analysed the effect of the fire source in the warehouse under the bridge and the height of the bridge using FDS code. To compare accuracy of simulation results, we simulated the experimental result with unit combustibles which is heptane as well as the mock-up test. Using this method, we evaluated the fire safety of the bridge which contains spalling and strength damage of concrete as well as damage of reinforcements according to the fire source and the height of the bridge. Most of the bridges are vulnerable to spalling of concrete. The book combustion has the strongest fire intensity which is expected to damage the bridge less than 30m height in the three types of the fire sources. The bridge over the 30m height can ensure the fire safety in the case of the rubber combustion.

  • In LSP (laser shock peening) treatment, the laser source geometries when the laser beam strikes the metal target area are diverse. The laser spot geometry affects the residual stress field beneath the treated surface of the metallic materials, which determines the characteristics of the pressure pulse. In this paper, detailed finite-element (FE) simulations on laser shock peening have been conducted in order to predict the magnitude and of the residual stresses and the depth affected in Inconel alloy 600 steel. The residual stress results are compared for circular, rectangular, and elliptical laser spot geometries. It is found that a circular spot can produce the maximum compressive residual stresses near the surface but generates tensile residual stresses at the center of the laser spot. In the depth direction, an elliptical laser spot produces the maximum compressive residual stresses. Circular and elliptical spots plastically affect the alloy to higher depths than a rectangular spot.

  • An experimental study of a steel plate thickness gauge by means of the measurements of backscatered gamma-rays has been carried out. The difference between this and other methods is that this method does not include any shilding matterials in the detecting probe, because the primary radiations and the backscattered radiations are detected simultaneously by an NaI (TI) scintillating crystal, and the activity of the Co-60 source used is low enough. In this thickness gauge, the thickness of the steel plates can be read directly on the counting ratemeter scale. The optimum conditions in the source-to-detector distance, window width of the analyzer, energy and strength of the gamma-ray source were found experimentally. The results have shown that the accuracy of the gauge was about $\pm$3% in the range of 3 to 8mm thickness. This gauge can be used to detect the pits or corrosions on the inner walls of the steel pipes.

  • This paper aims to verify the applicability of OpenFOAM, the widely recognized open source CFD code, to external flows commonly found in aeronautical problems. To this end, several representative flow cases are selected first from subsonic to supersonic flow fields. Then, the computational results obtained from OpenFOAM are systematically compared against available data from experiments and other numerical codes. It was found that the strength and location of shock are well predicted and the effects of boundary conditions on the computed results are reviewed. Subsonic flow with massive separation is selected to validate the prediction capability of OpenFOAM. Based on the current results, the limitation and possibility of OpenFOAM was confirmed and for future study using OpenFOAM was suggested.
