The concentration levels of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in ambient air have been investigated from a monitoring station located in Yang Jae district of Seoul, Korea for a long-term period covering 1997 through 2002. The mean concentration of Hg, if computed based on its hourly measurement data for this six-year period, was $5.32\pm3.53 ng m^{-3} (N = 27,170)$. The inspection of the diurnal distribution patterns indicated the presence of notably high concentration levels during nighttime relative to daytime (e.g., the mean hourly value as high as $9 ng m^{-3}$ in winter nighttime). When divided seasonally, the highest mean of $6.12 ng m^{-3}$ was also observed during winter followed by spring, fall, and summer. The results of our analysis confirmed the relative dominance of winter (seasonally) or nighttime (diurnally), while exhibiting a complicated trend on a long-term basis. Examination of our data over a different temporal scale consistently indicated that dynamic changes in Hg concentrations occurred through time in line with changes in the strength and diversity of the source processes. It is thus acknowledged that the presence of unusually high Hg levels is the consequence of intense man-made activities, while such signatures can vary in a competitive manner.
The ionic composition of $PM_{2.5}$ samples was investigated by their datasets of cationic ($Na^+$, $NH_4^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$) and anionic components ($Cl^-$, $NO_3^-$, and $SO_4^{2-}$) along with relevant environmental parameters collected from an urban monitoring site in Korea at hourly intervals in 2010. The mean (and SD) annual concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ was computed as 25.3 ${\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ with the wintertime maximum. In addition, sum concentrations (neq $m^{-3}$) of five cationic species (291) were slightly lower than 3 anionic species (308). Most cations exhibited the highest seasonal values in spring, while anions showed more diversified seasonal patterns. According to PCA, five major source categories were apparent with the relative dominance of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA). The results of our study suggest consistently that the distribution of ionic constituents in an urban area is affected by the combined effects of both natural and anthropogenic processes.
The high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater incorporated with the ability to use carbon dioxide as the carbon source make the microalgae become more attractive in wastewater treatment process. This study evaluates the optimal conditions for the digestion of settelable solids from the recirculating aquaculture system to produce the biomass of the green microalga Scenedesmus sp. After solids separation, aerobic digestion of settleable solids under disperse condition produced nitrate as the final product of consequently ammonification and nitrification processes. With the optimal digestion procedure, nitrate concentration during aerobic digestion in 2000 mL vessel increased from $9.63{\pm}0.65mg\;N/L$ to $58.66{\pm}0.06mg\;N/L$ in 10 days. Thereafter, cultivation of Scenedesmus sp. was performed in 1000 mL Duran bottle with air bubbling. The highest Scenedesmus sp. specific growth rate of $0.321{\pm}0.01/d$ was obtained in treatment using liquid fraction after aerobic digestion as the whole culture medium for Scenedesmus sp. cultivation. With this study, digestion of $8,800{\pm}128.12mg\;dry\;weight/L$ of settleable solids from fish pond finally produced $1,235{\pm}21mg\;dry\;weight/L$ of Scenedesmus sp. biomass.
The main objective of this study is to estimate the levels of pollution to which the community is presently exposed and to model the regimes of local air quality. Diurnal, daily, and monthly variations of NO, NO2, SO2, and O3 were thoroughly investigated in three areas; namely, residential, industrial, and terminal in Ras Al-Khafji. There is obvious diurnal variation in the concentration of these pollutants that clearly follows the diurnal variation of atmospheric temperature and main anthropogenic and industrial activities. Correlation analysis showed that meteorological conditions play a vital role in shaping the pattern and transportation of air pollutants and photochemical processes affecting O3 formation and destruction. Bivariate polar plots, an effective graphical tool that utilizes air pollutant concentrations' dependence on wind speed and wind direction, were used to identify prevailing emission sources. Non-buoyant ground-level sources like domestic heating and street transport emissions, various industrial stacks, and airport-related activities were considered dominant emission sources in observatory sites. This study offers valuable and detailed information on the status of air quality, which has considerable, quantifiable, and important public health benefits.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) powder was successfully synthesized at low temperature via carbothermal reduction and nitridation (CRN) assisted by microwave heating. The synthesis processes of AlN powder were investigated with X-ray diffraction, FE-SEM, FT-IR and TGA/DSC. Aluminum nitrate was used as an oxidizer and aluminum source, urea as fuel, and glucose as carbon source. These starting materials were mixed with D.I water and reacted in a flask at $100^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. After the reaction was finished, black foamy intermediate product was formed, which was considered to be an amorphous $Al_2O_3$ particles through intermediate product obtained by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) at the results of X-ray diffraction patterns and FT-IR. This intermediate product was nitridated at temperatures of $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere by a microwave heating furnace and then decarbonated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in air. It should be noticed from FE-SEM images that as nitridated particles, identified as AlN from X-ray diffraction patterns, are covered with carbon residues. After decarbonating the nitridated powders, the spherical pure AlN powders were obtained without alumina and their particle sizes were dependent on the nitridating temperature with high temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ giving large particles of around 70~100 nm.
This is a report on the fabrication of a flexible OTFT backplane for electrophoretic display (EPD) using a printing technology. A practical printing technology for a polycarbonate substrate was developed by combining the conventional screen and inkjet printing technologies with the wet etching and oxygen plasma processes. For the gate electrode, the screen printing technology with Ag ink was developed to define the minimum line width of ${\sim}5{\mu}m$ and the thickness of ${\sim}70nm$ with the resistivity of ${\sim}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, which are suitable for displays with SVGA resolution. For the source and drain (S/D) electrodes, PEDOT:PSS, whose conductivity was drastically enhanced to 450 S/cm by adding 10 wt% glycerol, was adopted. In addition, the modified PEDOT:PSS could be neatly confined in the specific S/D electrode area that had been pretreated with oxygen. The OTFTs that made use of the developed printing technology produced a mobility of ${\sim}0.13cm^2/Vs.ec$ and an on/off current ratio of ${\sim}10^6$, which are comparable to those using thermally evaporated Au for the S/D electrode.
Infrared emissions from spherical dust, clouds are calculated using quasi-diffusion method. We have employed graphite-silicate mixture with power-law size distribution for the dust model. The grains are assumed to be heated and cooled by radiative processes only. The primary heating source is diffuse interstellar radiation field. hut the cases with an embedded source are also considered. Since graphite grains have higher temperature than silicate grains, the observed IR emission is mainly due to graphite grains, unless the fraction of graphite grains is negligibly small. The color temperature of Bok globules obtained from IRAS 60 and $100{\mu}m$ data are found to be consistent with the dust cloud with graphite-silicate mixture exposed to average interstellar radiation field. The color temperature is sensitive to the external radiation field, but rather insensitive to the size distribution of the grains. We found that the density distribution can be recovered outside the beam size using the inversion technique that assumes negligible optical depth. However, the information within the beam size is lost for if beam convolved intensity distributions are used in deriving density profile.
When denitrification was connected with a single stream process by using biofilter and sulfur-limestone, it was found that such connection enabled highly efficient nitrification without special unit operation of microorganisms or injection of external carbon sources which is being shown in general biological treatment processes. It was observed that in the trickling filter bed, decomposition of organic substances and highly efficient nitrification by both the forced pressure feed trickling and the air fan were simultaneously done. In the denitrification tank where sulfur-limestone was mixed at a certain ratio, limestone was used by autotrophic microorganisms as a source of supply for alkalinity, and nitrate $NO_{3}^{-}$-N was denitrified into nitrogen gas. And in the sulfur-limestone autotrophic denitrification, $NO_{3}^{-}-N\;or\;NO_{2}^{-}-N$ was denitrified as a sulfur compound in reduction state was oxidized into a final output of $SO_{4}^{-2}$. The mean concentration of the discharge water was 8.6 mg/l for T-N and 0.8 mg/l for T-P, respectively, and their mean treatment efficiency was 79.2% and 80.8%, respectively. Implementing highly efficient denitrification without injection of an external organic carbon source or internal return, it is concluded that the proposed process is suitable for a sewerage in a small village with the merits of low power consumption and easy maintenance.
The biogeochemical cycle of silver has rarely been reviewed, even though the silver ion (Ag$^{\times}$) is extremly toxic to some organisms. Its concentration is still rising sharply because of increased anthropogenic activity, specifically the discharge from the film industry (mainly, silver thiosulfate: Ag (S$_2$O$_3$)${^3-}_2$). Recently, a number of researchers have quantified the major fluxes and reservoirs of silver in the open ocean, bays, and estuaries. A review of the available information for Ag cycling in the open ocean shows that the riverine input (from human activity and weathering processes: 7${\times}$10$^6$ kg/yr and 5${\times}$10$^6$ kg/yr, respectively) is the dominant source of Ag to estuarine and coastal regions. Most of the silver (90% of riverine input silver) is removed in coastal sediments by the physical-chemical character of silver due to its high partitioning with particulate matter. On the other hand, in the open ocean the atmospheric input (wet and dry deposition: 1.48${\times}$10$^6$ kg/yr and 1.94${\times}$ 10$^5$ kg/yr, respectively) becomes more important as a source of silver than riverine input. The residence time of silver calculated from available data is 1250 yrs in the deep ocean below 500 m, but only 3 yrs in the surface ocean.

Surface finishing is still indispensable for most rapid prototyping (RP) processes because of the inherent stair-stepped surface and shrinkage of the parts. These problems can be minimized in the $VLM-_ST$ Process, because it uses expandable polystyrene foam sheets, each of which has a thickness of3.9 mm and a linear-interpolated side slope. The use of thick layers, however, limits the process capability of constructing fine details. This study focuses on the design of post-processing tool for fine details of $VLM-_ST$ parts and investigation of thermal characteristics during EPS foam cutting using the post-processing tool. To calculate the heat flux from the tool into the foam sheet, the tool was modeled as a heat source of radiation for finite element analysis. Results of the analysis agreed well with those of the experiment.
