  • We present a pre processing system for the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) sounding suite onboard Aqua satellite. With its unprecedented 2378 channels in IR bands, AIRS aims at achieving the sounding accuracy [s1]of a radiosonde (1 K in 1-km layer for temperature and 10% in 2-km layer for humidity). The core of the pre p rocessor is the International MODIS/AIRS Processing Package (IMAPP) that performs the geometric and radiometric correction to compute the Earth's radiance. Then we remove spurious data and retrieve the brightness temperature (Tb). Since we process the direct-broadcast data almost for the first time among the AIRS directbroadcast community, special attention is needed to understand and verify the products. This includes the pixel-to-pixel verification of the direct-broadcast product with reference to the fullorbit product, which shows the difference of less than $10^{-3}$ K in IR Tb.

  • Black porgy and fat greenling are commercially important fish species due to the continuously increasing demand in Korea. When estimating acoustically the fish length by a fish sizing echo sounder, it is of crucial importance to know the target strength (TS) to length dependence. In relation to these needs, the target strength experiments for live fishes were conducted in an acrylic salt water tank using two split-beam echo sounders operating at 70 and 120kHz. The target strength under well-controlled laboratory conditions was simultaneously measured with the swimming movement by digital video recording (DVR) system and analyzed as a function of fish length (L) and frequency (or wavelength ${\lambda}$). Equations of the form TS-alog (L)+blog (1)+c were derived for their TS-length dependence. The best fit regression of TS on fork length for black porgy was TS=20.62 log (L, m)-0.62 log (${\lambda}$, m)-30.68 ($r^2$=0.77). The best fit regression of TS on fork length for fat greenling was TS=12.06 log (L, m)-5.85 log (${\lambda}$, m)-22.15 ($r^2$=0.44).

  • Cloudsat satellite data is sensitive to snowfall and collected during each month beginning with Dec 2007 and ending Feb 2008. In this study, we attempt to develop a snowfall retrieval algorithm using a combination of radiometer and cloud radar data. We trained data from the relation between brightness temperature measurements from NOAA's Advanced Microwave Sounder Unit-B(AMSU-B) and the radar reflectivity of the 2B-GEOPROF product from W-band(94 GHz) cloud radar onboard Cloudsat and applied it to the Korea peninsula. We use a principal components analysis to quantify the variations that are the result of the radiometric signatures of snowfall from those of the surface. Finally, we quantify the correlation between the higher principal component (orthogonal to surface variability) of the microwave radiances and the precipitation-sensitive CloudSat radar reflectivities. This work summarizes the results of applying this approach to observations over the East Sea during Feb. 2008. The retrieved data show reasonable estimation for snowfall rate compared with Cloudsat vertical image.

  • In this paper, an automatic cruise system of unmanned boat was developed for surveying water depth in reservoir using accurate location information. Using global satellite navigation system(GNSS) data in real time, this unmanned system, combined with an echo sounder, can simultaneously collect location information and depth information on the reservoir. This automatic navigation system allows the automatic route generation program to automatically generate a cruise route according to the input conditions for grid sizes of 5m, 10m and 20m, and automatically controls the cruise route with high positional accuracy. The developed system was tested to verify the applicability of the selected Yonggok(Geoncheon) reservoir as a test reservoir located in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do.

  • In this paper, we design the internal parameters of the SIMO channel sounder suitable for the measurement of the high-speed travel environment channel, and measure the characteristics of the wide-band channel by applying the proposed measurement method to the Yeoju Smart Highway piloted at 5.89 GHz C-ITS. Based on the design of the receiving array structure suitable for the real environment, the linear slope compensation method for the Doppler phase shift is applied to provide a reliable result on the Doppler effect due to the incoming angle information and the surrounding environment in the multipath environment.

With its unprecedented 2378 channels in IR bands, AIRS aims at achieving the sounding accuracy of radiosonde (1 K in 1-km layer for temperature and $10\%$ in 2-km layer for humidity). The core of the processor is the International MODIS/AIRS Processing Package (IMAPP) that performs the geometric and radiometric correction for generation of Level 1 brightness temperature and Level 2 geophysical parameters retrieval. The processor can produce automatically from received raw data to Level 2 geophysical parameters. As we process the direct-broadcast data almost for the first time among the AIRS direct-broadcast community, a special attention is paid to understand and verify the Level 2 products. This processor includes sub-systems, that is, the near real time validation system which made the comparison results with in-situ measurement data, and standard digital information system which carry out the data format conversion into GRIdded Binary II (GRIB II) standard format to promote active data communication between meteorological societies. This processing system is planned to encourage the application of geophysical parameters observed by AIRS to research the aqua cycle in the Korean peninsula.

  • The observation error of satellite radiation data that assimilated into the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) was diagnosed by applying the Hollingsworth and Lönnberg and Desrozier techniques commonly used. The magnitude and correlation of the observation error, and the degree of contribution for the satellite radiance data were calculated. The observation errors of the similar device, such as Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A shows different characteristics. The model resolution accounts for only 1% of the observation error, and seasonal variation is not significant factor, either. The observation error used in the KIM is amplified by 3-8 times compared to the diagnosed value or standard deviation of first-guess departures. The new inflation value was calculated based on the correlation between channels and the ratio of background error and observation error. As a result of performing the model sensitivity evaluation by applying the newly inflated observation error of ATMS, the error of temperature and water vapor analysis field were decreased. And temperature and water vapor forecast field have been significantly improved, so the accuracy of precipitation prediction has also been increased by 1.7% on average in Asia especially.

  • This paper presents the operations of a multi-beam echo sounder (MBES) installed on the deep-sea remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Hemire. Hemire explored hydrothermal vents in the Forecast volcano located near the Mariana Trench in March of in 2006. During these explorations, we acquired profiling points on the routes of the vehicle using the MBES. Information on the position, depth, and attitude of the ROV are essential to obtain higher accuracy for the profiling quality. However, the MBES installed on Hemire does not have its own position and depth sensors. Although it has attitude sensors for roll, pitch, and heading, the specifications of these sensors were not clear. Therefore, we had to merge the high-performance sensor data for the motion and position obtained from Hemire into the profiling data of the MBES. Then, we could properly convert the profiling points with respect to the Earth-fixed coordinates. This paper describes the integration of the MBES with Hemire, as well as the coordinate conversion between them. Bathymetric maps near the summit of the Forecast volcano were successfully collected through these processes. A comparison between the bathymetric maps from the MBES and those from the Onnuri Research Vessel, the mother ship of the ROV Hemire for these explorations, is also presented.

  • The paper presents implementation & evaluation of survey method with tilted transducer of Multi Beam Echo Sounder (MBES) to increase horizontal & vertical coverage over obstructed port environments with limited physical properties of MBES. Proposed method ($25^{\circ}$ titled transducer) have some discrepancy of bathymetric profiles between normal and tilting method, but we proved average difference is less than IHO Special Order requirements with survey data at port of Dong Ho Port, Masan, Korea. For horizontal mapping coverage of total survey area ($114,961m^2$), normal method covered 53%, $60,895m^2$ of total area but tilting method covered 75%, $5.933m^2$. It is 22% efficient than normal method with similar environments. For vertical mapping coverage of total vertical structure face ($7,421m^2$), normal method covered 14%, $1,046m^2$, proposed methods covered 60%, $4,450m^2$. And we adapt longitudal steel bar to validate MBES results, and provide calibration method with titled transducer of MBES.
