Engine enclosures are widely adopted to reduce the noise emission in various fields of application. The radiated noise, which is due to the vibration of enclosure's outer surface, is composed of two kinds of sound power with different path of propagation. One is the 'structure-borne sound power' which stems from the engine's vibratory force applied to the structure of enclosure through the mounting parts of engine etc., while the other is the 'air-borne sound power' which is originated by the sound power radiated from the engine surface to the inner space of enclosure that should excite the vibration of enclosure from inside. In order to get a most efficient engine enclosure is required a profound consideration upon the above structure-borne and air-borne noise, since the guiding principle of countermeasure for each noise is quite different. The controlling of input vibration and its isolation are major subject for the structure-borne sound power and the specifications of absorbing member and damping panels are the major interests for the air-borne sound power. Hence it seems very efficient to separate the total sound power into two categories with a great accuracy when one think of further reduction of engine noise from the exciting enclosure, however, its separating methods have not been made clear for many years. Then author proposes a new practical separation method of two propagation path's contribution to the total radiation sound power for the enclosure under the engine operating condition.
The sound wave in the sea propagates under the effect of water depth, sound speed structure, sea surface roughness, bottom roughness, and acoustic properties of bottom sediment. In shallow water, the bottom sediments are distributed very variously with place and the sound speed structure varying with time and space. In order to investigate the seasonal propagation characteristics of low-frequency sound wave in the Yellow Sea, propagation experiments were conducted along a track in the middle part of the Yellow Sea in spring, summer, and autumn. In this paper we consider seasonal variations of the sound speed profile and propagation loss based on the measurement results. Also we quantitatively investigate variation of bottom loss by dividing the propagation loss into three components: spreading loss, absorption loss, and bottom loss. As a result, the propagation losses measured in summer were larger than the losses in spring and autumn, and the propagation losses measured in autumn were smaller than the losses in spring. The spreading loss and the absorption loss did not show seasonal variations, but the bottom loss showed seasonal variations. So it was thought that the seasonal variation of the propagation loss was due to the seasonal change of the bottom loss and the seasonal variation of the bottom loss was due to the change of the sound speed profile by season.
Human's vision is mostly confined to the area in the front and we, humans heavily depend on the sense of hearing to gather information in areas out of our sight. Thus, the virtual reality system consisting of the 3D sound effect gives the user a much better sense of reality than the system without the sound effect. Virtual 3D sound technology has mainly been researched with binaural system. The conventional binaural sound systems reproduce the desired sound at two arbitrary points using two channels in 3-D space. Head movement of listener might be change the nominal acoustic transfer function and deteriorate the performance of 3D sound system based on loudspeakers that needs a crosstalk canceller. In this paper, low kinds of sensitivity functions of sphere HRTF are derived to investigate the effect of head movement on HRTF in 3D sound system. Changes of HRTF caused by rotational and translational motion of head are obtained as we calculate the derivatives of HRTF with respect to angle and distance.
Sound reception system is required to detect the sound and the quadrantal direction of the other ship's horn sound, to overcome the effects of enclosed wall for navigation space, functioning as a sound barrier. However, the realized systems can only provide quadrantal information of the other ship. This paper presents a new arrangement of microphones, having geometrically symmetric deployment with the same distances between sensors and the same angles between adjacent sensors with respect to the geometrical center. The sound pressures received at microphones are transformed into the related envelope signals by applying Hilbert transform. The time delays between microphones are estimated by the correlation functions between the derived envelope signals. This envelope base processing mitigates the noises related to the reflection by ship and sea surface. Then, the directional information is easily defined by using the estimated time delays. The suggested method is verified by the generated signals using boundary element method for a small ship model with sea surface wave. The estimated direction is quite similar to the true one and therefore the proposed approach can be used as an efficient sound reception system.
It is well known that sound waves in the sea propagates under the influence of sea surface and bottom roughness, the sound speed profile, the water depth, and the density of sea floor sediment. In particular, an abrupt change of sound speed with depth can greatly affect sound propagation through an eddy. Eddies are frequently generated in the East Sea near the Korean Peninsula. A warm eddy with diameter of about 150 km is often observed, and the sound speed profile is greatly changed within about 400 m of water depth at the center by the eddy around the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea. The characteristics of low-frequency sound propagation across a warm eddy are investigated by a sound propagation model in order to understand the influence of warm eddies. The acoustic rays and propagation losses are calculated by a range-dependent acoustic model in conditions where the eddy is both present and absent. We found that low-frequency sound propagation is affected by the warm eddy, and that the phenomena dominate the upper ocean within 800 m of water depth. The propagation losses of a 100 Hz frequency are variable within ${\pm}15$ dB with depth and range by the warm eddy. Such variations are more pronounced at the deep source near the sound channel axis than the shallow source. Furthermore, low-frequency sound propagation from the eddy center to the eddy edge is more affected by the warm eddy than sound propagation from the eddy edge to the eddy center.

In order to compute the radiated sound from a vibrating structure, the Rayleigh's integral equation has to be derived from the Helmholtz equation using Green's function. Generally, the surface velocity in the Rayleigh's integral equation uses the root mean square(rms) velocity. The calculation value is too large, because it's not considered cancelation. On the other hand. using the complex velocity, the sound pressure is calculated too small, because it considers that sound is perfectly canceled out. Therefore, this thesis proposes a correction factor(CF) which considers vibration modes and the method by which to calculate the radiating sound pressure. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental values, and the proposed method can be verified with confluence.
Many of steel structures having little internal damping consist of stiffened plates. In case that viscoelastic materials are adhered to the stiffened plates for the reduction of structure-borne noise, their effects are varied by the adhered position and dynamic characteristics of the structures as well as their material properties and adhered amount. In this paper, sound reduction effects of viscoelastic materials partially adhered to the different positions of a stiffened steel plate have been investigated by the measurement of vibratory velocity and sound intensity. The results show that optimal adherent positions of viscoelastic materials to reduce sound radiation power are the loop areas of modes.
The two-microphone sound-intensity technique has been used for the detection of defects in radially loaded ball bearings. The difference in the sound-intensity levels measured for bearings with no defect and for those with intentionally introduced defects of different sizes in their elements under various operating conditions of loads and speeds is demonstrated. A change in the intensity frequency spectrum because of the defects is observed. The results show that the detectability of an outer-race defect is much better than that of on inner-race or ball defect. It is difficult to detect defects at lower speeds. Sound-pressure measurements were also performed fur comparison, and it is shown that the detectability of defects by sound-intensity measurements is better than that by sound-pressure measurements.
The directivity of an underwater sound source should be measured in an acoustically open field such as a calm sea or lake, or an anechoic water tank facility. However, technical difficulties arise when practically implementing this in open fields. Signal processing-based techniques such as a sound intensity method and near-field acoustic holography have been adopted to overcome the problem, but these are inefficient in terms of acquisition and maintenance costs. This study established a simple directivity estimation technique with data acquisition, filtering, and analysis tools. A numerical simulation based on an acoustic radiosity method showed that the technique is practicable for sound source directivity estimation in a diffused reverberant acoustic field like a reverberant water tank.
