  • The speed of sound (SOS) value is an indicator of bone mineral density (BMD). Previous genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified a number of genes, whose variations may affect BMD levels. However, their biological implications have been elusive. We re-analyzed the GWA study dataset for the SOS values in skeletal sites of 4,659 Korean women, using a gene-set analysis software, GSA-SNP. We identified 10 common representative GO terms, and 17 candidate genes between these two traits (PGS < 0.05). Implication of these GO terms and genes in the bone mechanism is well supported by the literature survey. Interestingly, the significance levels of some member genes were inversely related, in several gene-sets that were shared between two skeletal sites. This implies that biological process, rather than SNP or gene, is the substantial unit of genetic association for SOS in bone. In conclusion, our findings may provide new insights into the biological mechanisms for BMD.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the acoustic properties of Tofu and Acorn Curd (Dotori Muk), which are possibly used as tissue mimicking materials (TMMs). Due to its availability and low cost, Tofu was suggested as a TMM by several researchers who measured only sound speed and attenuation. The acoustic properties of Tofu and Muk including the backscattering coefficient were measured in this paper. Sound speed was measured by the time shift in a pulse echo setup. Attenuation coefficients and backscattering coefficients were measured by a broadband method using both 5 MHz and 10 MHz transducers in the frequency domain. The measured acoustic properties of both Tofu and Muk are observed to be similar to those of biological tissues such as beef liver or beef heart.

  • Due to rapid progress in the performance of high-end computers, numerical prediction of fluid flow and flow-induced sound is expected to become a vital tool for aero- and hydro- dynamic design of various flow-related products. This presentation focuses on the applications of large-scale numerical simulations to complex engineering problems with a particular emphasis placed on the low-speed flows. Flow field computations are based on a large eddy simulation that directly computes all active eddies in the flow and models only those eddies responsible for energy dissipations. The sound generated from low-speed turbulent flows are computed either by direct numerical simulation or by decoupled methods, according to whether or not the feedback effects of the generated sound onto the source flow field can be neglected. Several numerical examples are presented in order to elucidate the present status of such computational methods and discussion on the future prospects will also be given.

  • The recent manufacturing industry in Japan has found it difficult to transfer skills from trained workers to inexperienced workers because the former ages and then retires. This is a particular problem for lathe process, as this operation requires explicit and tacit knowledge, and defining the skills clearly in a manual is difficult. This study aims to develop a training system for lathe operation by using a simulator; this includes formulas that help define the relationship between the speed of tool feed and cutting sound/shape of chips which were proposed in the preceding study. The developed training system is verified the effectiveness.

  • Three kinds of rubber compounds were prepared, and their underwater acoustical properties were investigated for anechoic coating. Dynamic mechanical properties of the rubber compounds were measured using a dynamic mechanical analyzer and extended to 100 kHz using time-temperature superposition. The sound speed, reflection coefficient, and attenuation constant were calculated. Silicone rubber showed the lowest reflection coefficient, and nitrile rubber showed the highest attenuation constant. The acoustic properties of nitrile rubber compounds with various compositions were investigated. The sound speed, reflection coefficient, and transmission coefficient of the nitrile rubber in the frequency range of 200-1000 kHz were measured in a water-filled tank.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate transmission loss of the high speed railway's wall section accurately. Transmission loss measurement of ideal case i.e. the wall in the laboratory condition was carried out in first, which results were compared with those by statistical energy method. Transmission loss values of high speed railway calculated out by experimental method are compared with those from closed form solution. Commercial statistical energy analysis was also used to predict the outside pressure level using those measured transmission loss values. Simple SEA model could estimate reasonable exterior sound pressure level.

  • The more sophisticated patterns of propagation model is presented in this paper, which includes three different source characteristics (spherical, cosine and dipole). The spherical, cosine and dipole radiation characteristics compared, and sound event level and the maximum sound level are calculated by experiment and calculation. It is shown that patterns of propagation have dipole characteristics for low speed range (below about 150Km/h) at electric multiple system. We know that push-pull high speed system has cosine characteristics of noise propagation at low speed range (below about 200Km/h).

  • Two kinds of polyurethane elastomers were prepared and their acoustical properties underwater investigated. Their dynamic mechanical properties were measured using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. The sound speed and echo reduction in the 1-50 kHz frequency range were calculated from the data obtained using the analyzer. The sound speed, transmission and attenuation cofficient in 300-800 kHz were measured in a water-filled tank. Impedance tube experiments were performed to determine the reflective coefficient and echo reduction in the 3-8 kHz range. The polyurethane elastomer containing a hollow glass sphere showed a lower reflective coefficient and a higher echo reduction than the polyurethane elastomer without a filler.

  • In these days, there are huge increases of concerning underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs) to explore marine resources and to monitor climate change. To collect information from sensor nodes which are randomly deployed in underwater, Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) based locating methods have been recently introduced, which consider sound speed to be constant in underwater. However, underwater sound speed tends to vary depending on underwater environment factors, such as depth, temperature, and salinity. In this paper, we propose a method considering environment factors, can influence upon sound speed in underwater, and introduce experimental setup which can follow up environmental factors.
