Hollow fiber (HF) membranes are gaining wide interest over flat membranes due to their compaction and high area to surface volume ratio. This work addresses the fabrication of HF from polysulfone (PS) and polyethersulfone (PES) using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent in addition to other additives to achieve desired characteristics. The semi-pilot spinning system includes jacketed vessel, four spinneret block, coagulation and washing baths in addition to dryer and winder. Different parameters affecting dry-wet spinning phase inversion process were investigated. Dope compositions of PES, NMP and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) of varying molecular weights as additive were addressed. Some critical parameters of importance were also investigated. Those include dope flow rate, air gap, coagulation & washing baths and drying temperatures. The measured dope viscosity was in the range from 1.7 to 36.5 Pa.s. Air gap distance was adjusted from 20 to 45 cm and coagulation bath temperature from 20 to $46^{\circ}C$. The HF membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and mechanical properties. Results indicated prevalence of finger like structure and average surface roughness from about 29 to 78.3 nm. Profile of stress strain characteristics revealed suitability of the fibers for downstream interventions for fabrication of thin film composite membrane. Different empirical correlations were formulated which enable deeper understanding of the interaction of the above mentioned variables. Data of pure water permeability (PWP) confirmed that the fabricated samples fall within the microfiltration (MF)-ultrafiltration (UF) range of membrane separation.
When using an ionic liquid as co-solvent, the extraction efficiency of anticancer agent paclitaxel from biomass was dramatically improved. However, the residual ionic liquid had a significant negative effect on convenient and feasibility of following concentration and drying steps. In this study, a novel method was developed for the effective drying of the crude extract obtained from biomass extraction with ionic liquid. The residual ionic liquid was easily and conveniently removed by drying alone after pre-treatment and additional washing of a sample with water. The optimal crude extract/water ratio and mixing time for pre-treatment and crude extract/water ratio for additional washing were 1:70 (w/v), 4 min, and 1:100 (w/v), respectively. In the microwave-assisted drying process, the drying time was 9-fold shorter than in the vacuum oven drying process.
Generally $NiSO_4$ and $NiCl_2$ were used as raw materials for producing nickel carbonate. In the case of the produced nickel carbonate, $Na_2SO_4$ and NaCl are generated on the surface and inside of the nickel carbonate to decrease the purity of the nickel carbonate. High purity nickel carbonate can be produced according to the degree of removal of such impurities. In this study, $NiCl_2$ produced by nickel MHP solvent extraction process was used to study the production of nickel carbonate. High purity nickel carbonate was prepared by the conditions according to the nickel salt and carbonate equivalence ratio, the reduction of Na and Cl in nickel carbonate according to the washing of nickel carbonate, and the reduction of Na and Cl according to the washing water temperature.
Effects of number of washings with solvents on drying rates and physicochemical properties of dried soymilk residues(SMR) were investigated. The dried soymilk residue was prepared by washing the residue with acetone or ethanol, followed by drying at $60^{\circ}C$. Increase of number of washings with a residue/solvent ratio of 1/1.5 resulted in an increase in drying rate and in protein content of the residue while the lipid content decreased. The brightness of the dried residue and the properties of water and oil absorption were also improved by washing with acetone which was advantageous to ethanol for all of the properties measured. Washings more than 3 times with acetone or 2 times with ethanol were found to be less effective in terms of quality improvement. The more addition of dried residue into the mixture of SMR-wheat flour resulted in a linear increase of water and oil absorption characteristics.
Microplastics in water resources have been recognized as a serious problem. The discharge of microplastics from wastewater treatment plants is considered a major contributor to environmental pollution in water resources. However, a reliable analytical method for quantifying microplastics in wastewater treatment plants has not yet been established. This study proposes a reliable, quick, and easy analytical method for quantifying microplastics. For the removal of organic particles, preprocessing steps were applied including oxidation, sonication, washing, and sieving. Nile Red staining was used to visualize microplastics, and quantitative analysis was conducted using fluorescent imaging. The stained microplastics were ultimately quantified through image analysis software. Among the preprocessing steps, sonication and washing stages were particularly effective in efficiently removing interfering substances from wastewater, enhancing the accuracy of the microplastic analysis. Additionally, various solvents (methanol, acetone, and N-hexane) for the Nile Red staining solution were tested. When N-hexane was applied as the solvent, the quantity of stained microplastics was lower compared to methanol and acetone. This suggests that N-hexane has a greater potential of reducing false staining and counting of non-plastic particles. In summary, this research demonstrates a robust method for quantifying microplastics in wastewater treatment plants by employing effective preprocessing steps and optimizing the staining process with Nile Red and N-hexane.

A hyper branched 10-butylphenothiazine with in-situ thermally curable methacrylate (1,3,5-tris-[$\{$10-Butyl-3-(4-(2-methyl-acryloyloxy)-phenyl)-7-yl-10H-phenothiazine$\}$]-benzene, (tris-PTMA)) was synthesized successfully. From the TGA thermogram of tris-PTMA was thermally stable up to $336^{\circ}C$. In the first heating scan of DSC thermogram, tris-PTMA showed glass transition temperature (Tg) at $140^{\circ}C$ and broad endothermic process in the region of $144-179^{\circ}C$, which is thermally curing temperature. In the second heating process, $T_g$ exhibited at $158.7^{\circ}C$ and endothermic process was not observed. Thermally cured tris-PTMA showed no big change in the UV-visible spectrum after washing with organic solvent such as methylene chloride, chloroform, toluene, indicating that thermally cured film was very good solvent resistance. Thermally cured tris-PTMA was electrochemically stable and the HOMO energy level of tris-PTMA was -5.54 eV. The maximum luminance efficiency of double layer structured polymer light-emitting diode based on in-situ thermally cured tris-PTMA was 0.685 cd/A at 16.0 V, which was higher than that of the device without thermally cured tris-PTMA (0.348 cd/A at 15.0 V).

Extraction process of fucoxanthin from Undaria pinnatifida and stability of fucoxanthin was studied. In this study, to utilized extracted components as a functional food material, ethanol was used as a solvent. The maximum concentration of fucoxanthin was obtained when 80% ethanol solvent was used. The extraction yield of fucoxanthin increased as extraction temperature raised to $50^{\circ}C$. Water washing of raw material for 5 minutes reduced the salt content about 94%. From the experiment that fucoxanthin content reduced by 30% for 1 day storage at $70^{\circ}C$, it was demonstrated that fucoxanthin was thermal-unstable above $70^{\circ}C$. And experimental result of light- stability showed that fucoxanthin was very unstable with light.
BACKGROUND: As the demand for strawberries increases, people are paying attention to food safety in strawberry, especially pesticide residues. To remove the pesticides from strawberry, various washing and processing technique in households are additionally required. METHODS AND RESULTS: Strawberries were washed with water, detergent, alcohol, and ultrasonication and processed to strawberry jam. The mean reduction efficiency according to the washing solvent and method was found to be higher in the order of detergent (42.5%) > alcohol (41.7%) > water (41.3%) > ultrasoniation with alcohol (40.2%) > ultrasoniation with water (38.6%) > ultrasoniation with detergent (36.9%), but there was no significant difference among the treatments. The residue levels of pesticides during processing to jam decreased by 11.9-94.4% for etoxazole, fluopyram, procymidone, spiromesifen, and prochloraz, while the other pesticides were concentrated by boiling, or rather increased by 11.8-40.2%. However, when the residue levels were converted to residual amounts in consideration of the change in weight after processing, the residual amounts of the tested pesticides were reduced by 59.8-98.4% during processing. The processing factor (PF) were different for each pesticide, but PFs were < 1 for all washing solvents and methods, and 0.06-1.40 when processed into jam. CONCLUSION: To ensure the consumption of pesticide-free strawberry, the most efficient washing method is to immerse the strawberry in fresh water for few minutes, followed by rinsing them under running water.
The Jun and Fos families of eukaryotic transcription factors form heterodimers capable of binding to their cognate DNA enhancer elements. We are interested in searching for inhibitors or antagonists of the binding of the Jun-Fos heterodimer to the activator protein-1 (AP-1) site. The basic-region leucine zipper (bZIP) domain of c-Fos was expressed as a fusion protein with glutathione S-transferase, and allowed to form a heterodimer with the bZIP domain of c-Jun. The heterodimer was bound to glutathione-agarose, to which were added radiolabeled AP-1 nucleotides. After thorough washing, the gel-bound radioactivity was counted. The assay is faster than the coventional electrophoretic mobility shift assay because the gel electrophoresis step and the autoradiography step are eliminated. Moreover, the assay is very sensitive, allowing the detection of picomolar quantities of nucleotides, and is not affected by up to 50% dimethylsulfoxide, a solvent for hydrophobic inhibitors. Curcumin and dihydroguaiaretic acid, recently known inhibitors of Jun-Fos-DNA complex formation, were applied to this Jun-GST-fused Fos system and revealed to decrease the dimer-DNA binding.

Perovskite solar cells have received increasing attention in recent years because of their outstanding power conversion efficiency (exceeding 22%). However, they typically contain toxic Pb, which is a limiting factor for industrialization. We focused on preparing Pb-free perovskite films of Ag-Bi-I trivalent compounds. Perovskite thin films with improved optical properties were obtained by applying an anti-solvent (toluene) washing technique during the spin coating of perovskites. In addition, the surface condition of the perovskite film was optimized using a multi-step thermal annealing treatment. Using the optimized process parameters, $AgBi_2I_7$ perovskite films with good absorption and improved planar surface topography (root mean square roughness decreased from 80 to 26 nm) were obtained. This study is expected to open up new possibilities for the development of high performance $AgBi_2I_7$ perovskite solar cells for applications in Pb-free energy conversion devices.
